ChemComm Emerging Investigator Lectureship 2014: Winners announced

On behalf of the ChemComm Editorial Board we are delighted to announce the winners of the ChemComm Emerging Investigator Lectureship 2014.

To mark the 50th volume of ChemComm we have awarded three Lectureships this year. The 2014 winners are: Xinliang Feng, Max-Planck-Institute for Polymer Research (advanced organic materials), Tomislav Friščić, McGill University (organic chemistry) and Simon M. Humphrey, University of Texas (inorganic chemistry). Congratulations to the winners!

This annual lectureship recognises an emerging scientist in the early stages of their independent academic career. Further details of the Lectureship tours, including lecture locations, will be announced in due course. For information on previous winners see our website.

Also of interest: You can now read the 2014 Emerging Investigators Issue – which highlights research from outstanding up-and-coming scientists. There are a mix of Feature Articles and Communications, as well as an Editorial showcasing the authors – which includes some fun photos… look out for a giant pumpkin and R2D2!

ChemComm Emerging Investigators Issue 2014

We are delighted to announce the publication of the 2014 ChemComm Emerging Investigators issue.

Now in its fourth year, we have been overwhelmed by the community’s positive response to this issue. It showcases up-and-coming scientists who are internationally recognised for making outstanding contributions to their respective fields.

There are a mix of Feature Articles and Communications, as well as an Editorial showcasing the authors – which includes some fun photos… look out for a giant pumpkin and R2D2! You can also take a look at our previous issues in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Bath to host 2014 RSC Carbohydrate Meeting: 30 Apr-1 May

The University of Bath will host Spring 2014 Royal Society of Chemistry Carbohydrate Group Meeting from Wednesday 30 April – Thursday 1 May.

On Wednesday evening, the 2014 RSC Haworth Memorial Lecture will be delivered by David Crich, Schaap Professor of Organic Chemistry at Wayne State University, Detroit, USA.

The Meeting will also include the Inaugural Buchanan Award Lecture in honour of J Grant Buchanan, a former Visiting Professorial Fellow in the Department of Chemistry here at Bath, who died two years ago on 17 April 2012, at the age of 85. Grant was a great researcher and educator, and is remembered fondly for his infectious enthusiasm, collegiality and warm humanity.

Local delegates are free to attend the lectures and are also encouraged to submit posters.

There will be a number of poster prizes awarded:

Chem Sci, ChemComm and Chem Soc Rev poster prizes awarded at J400 chemonostics symposium

Congratulations to our Chemical Science, ChemComm and Chem Soc Rev poster prize winners at Chemonostics: Chemical receptors in the development of simple diagnostic devices, a one-day symposium held in Bath, UK on 28 November 2013. The event, organised by Professor Tony James from the University of Bath, was held to celebrate 400 years of Japan-British relations. Our Editor Dr Robert Eagling was on hand to award the prizes.

Nominate a colleague this week: ChemComm Emerging Investigator Lectureships 2014

This week is your last chance to nominate a colleague for the ChemComm Emerging Investigator Lectureships 2014.

Nominate by Friday 6th December 2013

The lectureships recognise emerging scientists in the early stages of their independent academic career. 2014 marks the 50th volume of ChemComm and in celebration of this very special anniversary we will be awarding three ChemComm Emerging Investigator Lectureships next year. So nominate a colleague today!

To qualify
To be eligible for the ChemComm Emerging Investigator Lectureship, the candidate should have completed their PhD on or after 4th September 2005. The candidate should also have published at least one article in ChemComm during the course of their independent career.

Award details
The recipient of the award will be invited to present a lecture at three different locations over a 12 month period. It is expected that at least one of the locations will be a conference. The recipient will receive a contribution of £1500 towards travel and accommodation costs. S/he will also be presented with a certificate and be asked to contribute a ChemComm Feature Article.

Nominations
Those wishing to make a nomination should send the following details to the ChemComm Editorial Office by Friday 6th December 2013:

Recommendation letter, including the name, contact details and website URL of the nominee.
A one page CV for the nominee, including their date of birth, summary of education and career, list of up to five independent publications, total numbers of publications and patents and other indicators of esteem and evidence of independence.
A copy of the candidate’s best publication to date (as judged by the nominator).
Two supporting letters of recommendation from two independent referees. These should not be someone from the same institution or the candidate’s post doc or PhD supervisor.

The nominator and independent referees are requested to comment on the candidate’s presenting skills.

Please note that self nomination is not permitted.

Selection procedure
The ChemComm Editorial Board will draw up a short-list of candidates based on the information provided by the referees and nominator. Short-listed candidates will be asked to provide a supporting statement justifying why they deserve the award. The recipients of the award will then be selected and endorsed by the ChemComm Editorial Board, and will be announced in Spring 2014.

2013		Professor Louise A. Berben (University of California Davis, USA) for synthetic and physical inorganic chemistry, who will give a plenary lecture at ISACS 13 in Dublin.
2013		Dr Marina Kuimova (Imperial College London, UK) for biophysical chemistry who will give her Lectureship in 2014.
2012		Professor Hiromitsu Maeda (Ritsumeikan University, Japan) – he was presented with his lecture certificate at ICPOC 21.
2011		Dr Scott Dalgarno (Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, UK) – Find out about his Emerging Investigator Lecture tour in China.

2014 Cram Lehn Pedersen Prize in supramolecular chemistry – nominations open

The International Committee of the International Symposium on Macrocyclic and Supramolecular Chemistry is pleased to invite nominations for the Cram Lehn Pedersen Prize for young supramolecular chemists.

The Cram Lehn Pedersen Prize, named in honour of the winners of the 1987 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, recognises significant original and independent work in supramolecular chemistry.

Previous winners include:

2013 – Tomoki Ogoshi from Kanazawa University in Japan

2012 – Jonathan Nitschke from the University of Cambridge in the UK

2011 – Amar Flood from Indiana University in the US

Those who are within 10 years of receiving their PhD on 31st December 2013 are eligible for the 2014 award. The winner will receive a prize of £2000 and free registration for the ISMSC meeting in Crystal City, Virginia. In addition to giving a lecture at ISMSC, a short lecture tour will be organised after the meeting in consultation with the Editor of Chemical Communications, the sponsor of the award.

ChemComm Emerging Investigator Lectureship 2013: Winners Announced

This year we received a high number of excellent nominations and therefore the Editorial Board have decided to award two Emerging Investigator Lectureships in 2013. The winners are Professor Louise A. Berben (University of California Davis, USA) and Dr Marina Kuimova (Imperial College London).

This annual lectureship recognises an emerging scientist in the early stages of their independent academic career.

The Editorial Board commended Louise’s contributions to the field of synthetic and physical inorganic chemistry, and Marina was awarded the lectureship for her excellent work within biophysical chemistry. Further details of the two Lectureships, including lecture locations, will be announced soon.

Cram Lehn Pedersen Prize winner Tomoki Ogoshi: US lectures 2013

Our 2013 Cram Lehn Pedersen Prize winner, Professor Tomoki Ogoshi (Kanazawa University, Japan), is set to visit the US this year to deliver his award lectures.

Tomoki Ogoshi will first present his lecture, entitled “Pillararenes: Easy-to-make and versatile receptors for supramolecular chemistry,” at the 8th International Symposium on Macrocyclic and Supramolecular Chemistry (8-ISMSC) in Crystal City, Virginia, USA from 7-11 July 2013.

Later in the year, Tomoki Ogoshi will speak at the University of Texas at Austin (20 Sept) where he will be hosted by ChemComm Associate Editor Professor Jonathan Sessler. He will then travel to San Diego, CA, to present his talk at the Scripps Research Institute (23 Sept), hosted by Professor Julius Rebek, Jr.
