Welcome to our new Associate Editor: Gabriel Merino

We would like to wish a very warm welcome to our new Chemical Science Associate Editor Professor Gabriel Merino!

 

Professor Gabriel Merino

Gabriel is a Professor in the Applied Physics Department at Centro de Investigacion y de Estudios Avanzados Merida (Cinvestav Mérida), México. He studied at the Universidad de las Americas Puebla (BSc in Chemistry, 1997) and Cinvestav Zacatenco (PhD in Chemistry, 2003) under the supervision of Alberto Vela. He then joined the group of Gotthard Seifert and Thomas Heine at TU Dresden as a postdoctoral fellow before returning to Mexico in 2005 to take his first independent research position at the Universidad de Guanajuato. He joined Cinvestav Merida in 2012 and his research group is one of the most active groups in Theoretical and Computational Chemistry in Mexico and Latin America.

Gabriel has also spent time researching at Cornell University (Roald Hoffmann, 2005), and the University of the Basque Country (Jesus Ugalde, 2011). He is a member of the Mexican National Researcher System (Level 3, the highest level), and a member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences. He has been awarded the Research Grant from the Academia Mexicana de Ciencias (2012), the Catedra Marcos Moshinsky (2012), the National Prize “Andres Manuel del Rio” in Chemistry from the Mexican Chemical Society (2017), the Walter Kohn Award (2018) from the International Center of Theoretical Physics, and the Moshinsky Medal (2019) from Institute of Physics (UNAM).

Gabriel has previously served as Associate Editor for RSC Advances (2016-2020) and is currently a member of the editorial board for the International Journal of Quantum Chemistry and ChemistrySelect. His group’s main research interests are the prediction of new chemical entities and the study of central concepts of chemistry, such as chemical bonding and aromaticity. Welcome to Associate Editor Maja Köhn

We would like to wish a very warm welcome to our new Chemical Science Associate Editor Professor Maja Köhn!

 

 

Maja Köhn is a Professor for Integrative Signaling Research at the Faculty of Biology, University of Freiburg, Germany. She studied chemistry at the University of Kiel and moved afterwards to the Max-Planck-Institute and the University in Dortmund, where she obtained her PhD under the direction of H. Waldmann in 2005. After Maja’s postdoctoral work with G. L. Verdine at Harvard University, she started her independent career in 2007 as a group leader at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, Germany. In 2016 Maja moved to Freiburg for her current position. Research in her group focuses on the development and application of tools using synthetic chemistry and molecular cell biology to study and target phosphatases in health and disease. Welcome to our new Associate Editor: Lin Chen

We would like to wish a very warm welcome to our new Chemical Science Associate Editor Professor Lin Chen!

 

Lin Chen, Chemical Science, Royal Society of Chemistry

Lin X. Chen is a Professor of Chemistry in Northwestern University and a Senior Chemist in Argonne National Laboratory. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. After her postdoctoral research at UC Berkeley, she joined Argonne as a staff scientist. In 2007, she joined Northwestern University where her research are focused on fundamental light-matter interactions of different solar energy conversion platforms, including excited state molecular structural dynamics in photocatalytic processes and photovoltaic materials; understanding roles of ultrafast and coherent electronic and atomic motions in in photochemical reactions, and functional structural dynamics of biomacromolecules on multiple spatial and temporal scales. Her main tools for research are ultrafast laser and X-ray spectroscopy/scattering and other property/structural methods in collaborations with theorists and chemists making molecules and materials.

She was awarded one of the highly cited scientists in 2019 by the Web of Science, with >230 publications, and >200 invited lectures. She has been members of the Research Council for the Chemical, Biological and Geological Sciences Division, Basic Energy Science, US Department of Energy, the Advisory Editorial Board of Journal of Physical Chemistry and Chemical Physics Letters, Senior Editor of ACS Energy Letters, and the International Science Advisory Committee for π-Functional Materials. She is an AAAS Fellow and has won distinguished performance award at Argonne. Her group website is at http://chemgroups.northwestern.edu/chen_group/.

François Gabbaï joins Chemical Science as an Associate Editor

We are delighted to announce that Dr François Gabbaï has joined Chemical Science as our newest Associate Editor.

François Gabbaï was born in France and attended the University of Bordeaux before moving to UT Austin where he became a PhD student with Alan Cowley.  Upon completion of his Ph.D. in 1994, he joined the group of Hubert Schmidbaur at the Technical University of Munich, first as a postdoctoral fellow and later as an Habilitand.  Upon completion of his Habilitation in 1998, he moved to Texas A&M University where he now holds the Arthur E. Martell Chair of Chemistry.  His research interests revolve around the chemistry of p-block elements and late transition metals with applications in anion recognition, anion transport, and catalysis.  His is a Fellow of the American Chemical Society, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the recipient of the 2009 North American Dalton Lectureship. In 2016, he also received the ACS F. Albert Cotton Award in Synthetic Inorganic Chemistry.

Yi-Tao Long joins Chemical Science as an Associate Editor

We are delighted to announce that Professor Yi-Tao Long has joined Chemical Science as an Associate Editor.

Yi-Tao is a Professor of Analytical Chemistry at Nanjing University in China. He received his B.S. in Chemistry at Shandong University in 1989 and his Ph.D. under the supervision of Professor Hongyuan Chen from Nanjing University in 1998. After undertaking two-year postdoctoral studies at Heidelberg University, Yi-Tao worked at the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Alberta in Canada for over five years. Following one more year of research at UC Berkeley, he started his independent career at the East China University of Science and Technology in 2007.

Yi-Tao’s research interests focus on the development of new electrochemical measurement methods to reveal the characteristics and dynamics of single entities. This involves nanopore single molecule electroanalysis, biointerface spectroelectrochemistry and integrated biosensors.

Yi-Tao looks forward to receiving cutting-edge submissions that lead to the frontiers of analytical science and electrochemistry.

Professor Paolo Melchiorre joins Chemical Science as an Associate Editor

We are delighted to introduce Professor Paolo Melchiorre as Chemical Science Associate Editor, handling submissions in the area of organic chemistry.

Paolo currently splits his time between two institutions, the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Genoa as a Tenured Senior Scientist, and the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ) in Tarragona as a Professor and Senior Group Leader. Paolo’s research is centered around the development of asymmetric organocatalytic and photochemical processes that can be used as tools to solve problems in organic synthesis. His aim is to utilise photoorganocatalysis for the development of environmentally friendly reaction processes, presenting innovative solutions to common synthetic problems.

Paolo now joins the Chemical Science team as an Associate Editor and looks forward to handling submissions in the areas of organic chemistry, photochemistry, asymmetric catalysis and organocatalysis.

Andrei Yudin joins Chemical Science as an Associate Editor

We are delighted to introduce Professor Andrei Yudin as Chemical Science Associate Editor, handling submissions in the area of organic chemistry.

Andrei is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Toronto, where his group specialise in chemical synthesis with a focus on the preparation of novel biologically active molecules. Andrei and his group pioneered work on the preparation of amphoteric reagents, developing structurally distinct intermediates that were viewed as impossible to prepare prior to their studies. The group have been highlighted for the preparation of a library of difficult-to-prepare azridine aldehydes and α-boryl aldehydes that can be applied in the preparation of medically relevant peptidomimetics.

Andrei is the current Editor-in-Chief of the Royal Society of Chemistry journal, Organic & Biomolecular Chemistry, and runs a blog series providing regular updates on the progress within his group, found at https://amphoteros.com/.

Andrei has now joined the team at Chemical Science and looks forward to receiving submissions in the areas of organic synthesis, transition metal catalysis, peptide preparation and macrocyclisation.

Andrew Cooper – our new Editor-in-Chief of Chemical Science

We are delighted to announce Professor Andrew Cooper as the new Editor-in-Chief of Chemical Science.

Andrew Cooper is Professor of Chemistry, Director of the Centre for Materials Discovery and Director of the Materials Innovation Factory at the University of Liverpool. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and has won several prizes and awards for his research.

Professor Cooper’s research interests lie in polymeric materials, supercritical fluids, microporous materials, hydrogen storage, metal nanoparticles, organometallics, emulsion-templated materials, and high-throughput materials methodology.

As we thank Professor Daniel Nocera for his valuable contributions to the journal during his term as Editor-in-Chief of Chemical Science over the past four years, we warmly welcome Professor Cooper as he leads the journal to continued success.

Serena DeBeer joins Chemical Science as an Associate Editor

We are delighted to announce that Professor Serena DeBeer has joined Chemical Science as an Associate Editor.

Serena is a Professor and Director at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Germany. She is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Cornell University, an honorary faculty member at Ruhr University in Bochum, and the group leader of the PINK Beamline at the Energy Materials In‐Situ Laboratory at Helmholtz Zentrum in Berlin. She received her B.S. in Chemistry at Southwestern University in 1995 and her Ph.D. from Stanford University in 2002. From 2002-2009, she was a staff scientist at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory, before moving to her faculty position at Cornell.

Serena’s research interests lie in the development and application of advanced X-ray spectroscopic tools for understanding processes in biological, heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis. This includes advances to X-ray spectroscopy techniques as well as applications focused on understanding electronic structural changes in catalytic processes such as N2 reduction, CH4 oxidation, H2O oxidation and H2 production.

Serena looks forward to receiving submissions in the areas of (bio)inorganic chemistry, heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis and spectroscopy.

Meet Luis M. Campos: Chemical Science Associate Editor

We are pleased to announce that Professor Luis M. Campos has joined Chemical Science as an Associate Editor.

Luis is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Columbia University. He was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, and moved at the age of 11 to Los Angeles, California. He received a B.Sc. in Chemistry from CSU Dominguez Hills in 2001, and a Ph.D. from the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at UCLA in 2006 working under the supervision of M. A. Garcia-Garibay and K. N. Houk. At UCLA, he was awarded the NSF Predoctoral Fellowship, Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship, and the Saul & Silvia Winstein Award for his graduate research in solid-state photochemistry. Switching to materials chemistry, he went to UCSB as a UC President’s Postdoctoral Fellow to work under the supervision of C. J. Hawker at the Materials Research Laboratory.

At Columbia, his group’s research interests lie in polymer chemistry, self-assembly, and organic electronic materials. To date, he has co-authored over 80 articles and 12 patents; and he has received various awards, including the ACS Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award, ONR Young Investigator Award, NSF CAREER Award, 3M Non-Tenured Faculty Award, I-APS Young Faculty Award, the Journal of Physical Organic Chemistry Award for Early Excellence, and the Polymers Young Investigator Award. In addition to these research accolades, Luis has been recognized for his pedagogical contributions by the Cottrell Scholar Award, Columbia University Presidential Teaching Award, and the Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award.
