Call for papers: Photoluminescence of lanthanide-doped phosphor materials

RSC Advances is delighted to announce a new themed collection titled ‘Photoluminescence of lanthanide-doped phosphor materials’. This collection is Guest Edited by Dr Ram Sagar Yadav (Banaras Hindu University), Prof. Bryce S. Richards (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology), Professor Joanna Pisarska (University of Silesia) and Professor Xinyu Ye (JiangXi University of Science and Technology).

Scope: 

The aim of this collection is to focus on the synthesis, as well as the structural and optical properties, of different types of lanthanide-doped phosphor materials, such as phosphors, nano-phosphors and phosphor composites. This collection welcomes primary research articles as well as review articles, related to the synthesis, characterization and applications of different types of the lanthanide-doped phosphor materials.

The lanthanide ions can produce multicolor photoluminescence, and contain various distinct energy levels in which some are meta-stable. Each energy level can be excited with a certain excitation wavelength, with the emitted light of lanthanide ions covering emissions in the ultraviolet, visible and near infrared regions. Due to the various properties of lanthanide ions, lanthanide-doped phosphor materials can be utilised for different technological applications in various fields, such as display devices, red-green-blue (RGB) emitting materials, light emitting diodes (LEDs), phosphor-converted LEDs (pc-LEDs), white LEDs, solar cell, optical heating, temperature sensing and bio-imaging.

Lanthanide ions also enable upconversion (UC) and downconversion (DC) of photons. The UC process is helpful for measuring the temperature sensing sensitivity of different phosphor materials, as it depends on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of the two thermally coupled (TC)/non-thermally coupled (NTC) emitting levels. In these cases, the emission intensity of one level is found to increase while that of the other decreases when the external temperature of the sample is increased, and vice-versa. This generates lattice vibration in the host lattice, which initiates a shift in the population of the excited ions from one level to the other. The plot between FIR-based sensitivity and external temperature gives temperature sensing, which can be examined in the other lanthanide-doped phosphor materials.

The aim of this collection is to focus on the synthesis, as well as the structural and optical properties, of different types of lanthanide-doped phosphor materials, such as phosphors, nano-phosphors and phosphor composites.   • Computational studies of nanocomposite materials
  • Life-cycle analysis of nanocomposite materials

Call for papers: Metal Extraction and Recycling

RSC Advances is delighted to announce a new themed collection titled ‘Metal Extraction and Recycling’. This collection is Guest Edited by Professor Jason Love (University of Edinburgh), Professor Alexandre Chagnes (University of Lorraine), Professor Isabelle Billard (Université Grenoble Alpes), Professor Magdalena Regel-Rosocka (Poznan University of Technology), Dr Euan Doidge (Imperial College London)

Scope: 

This themed collection aims to highlight the chemistry and chemical processes that underpin, and provide insight into, metal extraction and recycling. Metal recycling and extraction is an exciting and diverse topic for which fundamental chemical knowledge and its application are required. It is hoped that this collection would provide both greater awareness of the issues in metal extraction and recycling and showcase the advances provided by chemists and researchers in allied disciplines.

Call for papers: Chemistry in Biorefineries

RSC Advances is delighted to announce a new themed collection titled ‘Chemistry in Biorefineries‘. This collection is Guest Edited by Professor Alejandro Rodríguez Pascual (Universidad de Cordoba), Professor Carlos Martín Medina (Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences) and Professor Fabio Montagnaro (University of Naples Federico II).

Scope

The non-renewable nature of fossil fuels makes the current economic model unsustainable. The biorefinery concept, which takes traditional refineries as a starting point and adapts them to environmentally friendly processes based on bioresources as raw materials, has attracted the interest of a large number of scientists. Recent sustainable mobility outlooks indicate that electrification will coexist for a long time with combustion-based propulsion, thus entrusting biorefinery processes and the production of advanced biofuels with increasing importance.

Achieving a sustainable production of bio-based fuels, chemicals and materials requires a deep understanding of the chemistry behind biorefining processes. In this themed collection, we would like to invite researchers to submit original research papers directed to deepen the current knowledge of chemistry in biorefinery. Potential topics include:

  • New raw materials, analysis and characterization of biomass
  • Chemistry of pre-treatment and/or fractionation processes
  • Catalytic and biocatalytic conversion to biofuels, platform chemicals and fine chemicals
  • Thermal processes for the conversion of biomass into biofuels

Editors’ collection: Shining a Light on the f-Block by Associate Editor Robert Baker

We are delighted to share with you our latest collection of recently published articles Shining a Light on the f-Block, handpicked by Associate Editor Dr. Robert Baker (Trinity College Dublin).

Whilst the chemistry of the f-block (Ln and An) elements are not as well investigated as the transition metals, fascinating results have been forthcoming in the last 10 years. These results have challenged our ideas on bonding and led to refinement of theories on bonding and magnetism to name but two.

In this collection, numerous facets of the interest, both fundamental and applied, in f-block chemistry are showcased. The photophysics and magnetism of the lanthanides are highlighted in numerous applications, including biochemistry whilst there is still room for the coordination and organometallic chemistry of the lanthanides to be extended and explored.

The chemistry of the actinides is generally more challenging both experimentally and from a safety and regulatory framework. Separation science has an important role here for treatment of legacy, current and future nuclear wastes, both experimentally and theoretically. Advances in state-of-the-art spectroscopy highlights what can be achieved for small concentrations of U, Pu and Cm. The chemical creativity on display in this selection shows that forays into the f-block can be both satisfying and rewarding.

Meet the Editor

Dr Bob Baker was born in 1975 in Blaenavon, South Wales. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Warwick and carried out his PhD studies under the supervision of Prof. P. G. Edwards at Cardiff University (1997-2001) on early transition metal triphosphamacrocycles. He then worked as a postdoctoral research fellow with Prof. Cameron Jones (2001-2005), working on low oxidation state group 13 compounds. He was then awarded an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship held at the Technische Universität Braunschweig, working with Prof. Dr. Matthias Tamm on substituted cyclohepatrienyl early transition metal complexes. From 2006-2008 he was a Lecturer in Inorganic Chemistry at Nottingham Trent University, before moving to Trinity College in January 2009. His research interests are in fundamental and applied actinide chemistry and the development of new transition metal complexes for catalysis

Scope

Wastewater treatment and desalination have long served as viable options to provide safe drinking water and to reduce the environmental impact of human activities. Over the past decades, extensive works have been dedicated to the development of advanced functional materials that show enhanced physicochemical properties for applications in desalination and wastewater treatment. Currently, advanced nanocomposite materials are at the forefront of this research. Through the combination of two or more nanomaterials, synergistic effects can be achieved to augment the performances of a broad range of materials. These nanocomposite materials are bestowed with astonishing characteristics such as high hydrophilicity, high surface area, richness in surface functionalities, fast transport, and high selectivity. This special issue aims to collect and compile research articles and reviews focusing on the development of advanced nanocomposite materials for water and wastewater treatment.

Call for papers: New Insights into Biomolecular Systems from Large-Scale Simulations

RSC Advances is delighted to announce a new themed collection titled ‘New Insights into Biomolecular systems from Large-Scale Simulations’. This collection is Guest Edited by Professor Stacey Wetmore (University of Lethbridge), A/ Professor Megan O’Mara (Australian National University) and Dr Sarah Rauscher (University of Toronto).

 

Scope

Falling at the interface between biology, chemistry, physics, and computer science, computational biochemistry uses computer simulations to uncover the molecular level details of the structure, interactions, and function of diverse sets of biomolecules. The past decade has become a particularly exciting turning point in the field as modern computational resources are now sufficient to allow biological processes to be simulated at relevant times scales. As a result, new computational approaches have been developed that bridge the gap between simulations and experiments, allowing researchers to answer key questions about biomolecular dynamics and cellular function more broadly.

This themed collection in RSC Advances aims to highlight recent applications of computer simulations to understand the structural and functional dynamics of biomolecular systems, with the goal to extract insights from large datasets and permit direct comparisons to experimental data. An emphasis will be placed on the application of large-scale models to address unexplored areas in protein folding, intrinsically disordered proteins, protein aggregation, nucleic acid structure and function, membrane proteins, signaling molecules crossing membranes, and ligand interactions, among other topics.

Call for Papers: Nanomaterials in drug delivery

RSC Advances is delighted to announce a new themed collection titled ‘Nanomaterials in drug delivery’. This collection is Guest Edited by Dr Irina Savina (University of Brighton) and Professor Helder Al­meida San­tos (University of Helsinki).

 

Scope

Recent developments in nanomaterials have shown huge potential for the development of advanced drug delivery systems and have already expanded to a wide range of clinical applications. More recently the emphasis has been placed on personalised medicine, precision therapy, cancer treatment, immunotherapy, nanovaccines and RNA/gene delivery. However, there is still insufficient research on nanomaterials with specific relevance to regulatory issues, in particular with respect to the development of safety testing and risk assessment methods, and increasing the availability of quality data on nanomaterials for regulatory purposes.

This themed collection in RSC Advances aims to explore the latest developments in the design, preparation, and application of nanomaterials for drug delivery, understanding bio-nano interactions and biosystem parameters, assessing the safety of nanomedicine, potential limitations of nanomedicine fabrication including technical and legal aspects.

RSC Advances themed collection: Celebrating recent achievements in chemical science in Turkey

We are delighted to share with you our themed collection of recently published articles Celebrating recent achievements in chemical science in Turkey, Guest Edited by Fabienne Dumoulin (Acıbadem Mehmet Ali Aydınlar University) and Suna Timur (Ege University).

Associate Professor Dr. Fabienne Dumoulin first started university studying biology, graduated in biochemistry and then completed her PhD in organic chemistry in Lyon, France in 2002. She is currently associate professor at Acıbadem Mehmet Ali Aydinler University in Istanbul,Turkey.

Her research focuses on the chemistry, properties and applications of phthalocyanines, mainly for photodynamic therapy. She has authored so far 85 research articles, three book chapters, and supervised many Master and PhD students. Fabienne has also been the recipient of several Young Scientist Awards: TUBA-GEBİP from the Turkish Academy of Sciences, BAGEP from the Bilim Akademisi and the Mustafa N Parlar Foundation of METU. She was elected officer of the executive committee of the European Society for Photobiology in 2015 and 2017, is an Associate Editor for RSC Advances and the Journal of Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines, and is a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

 

 

 

Professor Suna Timur received her PhD degree in Biochemistry at Ege University in 2001. She is currently a full-time Professor in the Department of Biochemistry, at the same University.

Her research is focused on the integration of biomolecules and other species with micro and nanoplatforms to create novel functional bio-based surfaces. She has published more than 200 SCI articles, 4 book chapters and supervised 40 M.Sc and Ph.D thesis. Dr. Timur has also been the recipient of Young Scientist Awards; Encouragement Awards from TUBITAK and the Mustafa N Parlar Foundation of METU and FABED from Istanbul Technical University.
