We are pleased to announce that the 3rd International Conference on Perovskite Solar Cells and Optoelectronics (PSCO-2017) will be held in Oxford, United Kingdom from 18th – 20th September 2017 at the Mathematical Institute.

Registration and abstract submission will open in March with Journal of Materials Chemistry A, Materials Horizons and Energy & Environmental Science providing poster prizes at this conference.

Poster prize winners at the PhoSM 2016 Conference

Many congratulations to Kyohei Hisano (Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan) for his poster prize win at the PhoSM 2016 Conference which took place on the 24th – 27th November 2016 in Nagoya, Japan.

Kyohei was awarded the Journal of Materials Chemistry C poster prize and will receive free electronic access to the journal for one year for his poster titled: Photoalignment Control via Masked Photopolymerization without Polarized Light nor Alignment Layer

Topics discussed at the conference included the synthesis and design of photoresponsive molecules, photoalignment in liquid crystal materials and systems, physics and computer modeling of photoinduced effects.

153 delegates attended the conference from over 15 different countries. There were 55 oral presentations and 42 poster presentations. Further information about the conference can be found on their website.

Hightlights from POLYMAT SPOTLIGHT 2016

During the 21^st-24^th of June 2016 the very first edition of POLYMAT SPOTLIGHT (http://polymat-spotlight.eu) took place in the beautiful city of San Sebastian in Northern Spain.

POLYMAT SPOTLIGHT is a newly created international forum that aims at bringing together world-leading academics and key industries interested in emerging and technologically-relevant macromolecular materials. Organised by Prof. Aurelio Mateo-Alonso, the first edition of POLYMAT SPOTLIGHT was devoted to Novel Approaches to 2D and Porous Polymers, including synthesis, properties and applications.

This conference has been organised by POLYMAT (http://polymat.eu) a research centre on macromolecular materials ascribed to the University of the Basque Country, which is also member of the network of Basque Excellence Research Centres (BERC). The trigger for this initiative has been the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020 through the project 2D-INK, a Future and Emerging Technologies action (FET Open).

The conference venue was the Miramar Palace with one of the most spectacular views of the city. The program was organised to promote interactions between researchers with plenty of time for discussion during sessions, cocktails, coffee breaks and lunches, all taking place in the Miramar Palace.

Overall, 6 Plenary lectures and 13 Keynote lectures from recognised experts from all over the globe were arranged over the four days of the conference, including those of Professors Markus Antonietti, Maurizio Prato, Donglin Jiang, Nazario Martin, Graham Bodwell and Colin Nuckolls. The program was completed with 13 contributing lectures, 18 flash presentations and 31 posters, attracting >100 participants. To ensure the visibility of the contributing lecturers by including their talks in-between two invited (Plenary or Keynote) lectures.

With the support of Journal of Materials Chemistry A and Materials Horizons, three prizes were awarded to the best posters.

Given the great welcome that POLYMAT SPOTLIGHT has received, it will be organised on biyearly basis from now on. Indeed, the organisers are already working on the 2018 edition.

Poster prize winners at the Organic Semiconductors Conference

Materials Horizons poster prize winner Taro Furukawa (Kyushu University)

Many congratulations to Paula Mayorga (University of Malaga, Spain) and Taro Furukawa (Kyushu University) for their poster prize wins at the first Zing conference on Organic Semi Conductors which took place on the 22^nd– 25^thSeptember in Dubrovnik, Croatia. Paula was awarded the Journal of Materials Chemistry C poster prize and Taro was awarded the Materials Horizons poster prize. Both winners will receive free electronic access to the journals for one year.

Topics discussed at the conference were: structure/property guidelines for relevant applications, including organic photovoltaics, spintronics, biological interfaces, light-emitting diodes, field effect transistors and biosensors. 3rd Functional Oxide Thin Films for Advanced Energy and Information Technology Conference

The 3^rdFunctional Oxide Thin Films for Advanced Energy and Information Technology conference will be taking place from the 5^th– 8^thJuly 2017 in Rome, Italy.

The purpose of this meeting is to foster the exchange of ideas between the relevant energy and information themes, with the overall aim of sparking extensive discussions on the advances that materials physics and chemistry can make in thin film applications.

Key Sessions Include: Engineering and control of defects in complex oxides, fabrication and synthesis of oxide thin films and heterostructures, advanced characterization techniques for thin films, electronic and ionic transport in oxide thin films, magnetism and dielectric properties in oxide thin films, nanoionic and nanoelectronic oxide thin films: towards application, thin film oxides in energy conversion and storage applications, thin film oxides in information technology.

Confirmed keynote speakers include; Scott Chambers (Pacific Northwest National Laboratory), Chang-Beom Eom (University of Wisconsin-Madison), Jean-Marc Triscone (University of Geneva), Schmitt Thorsten (Paul Scherrer Institut), Harry Tuller (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Darrell Schlom (Cornell University), Jochen Mannhart (Max Planck Institute of Solid State Research).

Christopher Bettinger wins the 2016 Journal of Materials Chemistry Lectureship

We are delighted to announce that Professor Christopher Bettinger has been selected as the seventh winner of the Journal of Materials Chemistry Lectureship in recognition of the important contributions he has made to the materials chemistry field.

Professor Bettinger is aiming to present the lectureship at the 2017 Spring MRS in Phoenix Arizona, April 2017, during Symposium SM1 – Bioelectronics – Materials, Processes and Applications where he is both the meeting chair and an invited speaker.

Professor Bettinger received a S.B. in Chemical Engineering, a M.Eng. in Biomedical Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering as a Charles Stark Draper Fellow, all from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He completed his post-doctoral fellowship at Stanford University in the Department of Chemical Engineering as an NIH Ruth Kirschstein Fellow.

Christopher Bettinger is currently an Associate Professor at Carnegie Mellon University in the Departments of Materials Science and Engineering and Biomedical Engineering. He directs the laboratory for Biomaterials-based Microsystems and Electronics at CMU, which is broadly interested in the design of novel materials and interfaces that integrate medical devices with the human body.

Recent efforts focus on flexible electronics for neural interfaces edible electronics for ingestible diagnostics and therapeutics. Christopher is also the Co-Founder and CTO of Ancure, an early stage medical device company.

Christopher has also recently Guest Edited a joint themed issue between Journal of Materials Chemistry B and C on Organic Bioelectronics and contributed to the Journal of Materials Chemistry B 2016 Emerging Investigators themed issue.

TERMIS-AP poster prize winners

Congratulations to all the winners who were awarded poster prizes at the 2016 Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society- Asia Pacific Meeting (TERMIS-AP) which took place in Taiwan from the 3^rd– 6^thSeptember this year. The prize winners are listed below:

Materials Horizons poster prize winners: Mr. Wei-Hong Jian, Mr. Mathieu Danoy and Dr. Aurelien Forget.

Journal of Materials Chemistry B winners: Mr. Sheng-Jen Cheng, Ms. Menglu Li and Dr. Hong-Jian Wei.

Biomaterials Science winners: Mr. Kiefer Thouin, Mr. Jin Woo Lee and Ms. Vivian Halim.

The main theme of the meeting is “Personalized Medicine through Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine” consisting of various sub-themes including basic & translational researches and clinical trials of biomaterials, nanotechnology, stem cells, cell therapy, tissue engineering and advanced therapy medicinal products to provide a comprehensive coverage of diverse topics on current regenerative medicine.

Journal of Materials Chemistry Lectureship

The Journal of Materials Chemistry 2015 Lectureship was held on September 3^rd, 2016 at the 2016 Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society – Asia Pacific Meeting (TERMIS-AP 2016) in Tamsui, Taiwan.

Professor Chengtie Wu from the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, was the recipient of the award and gave the lectureship on 3D-printing of complex-structured bioscaffolds for bone therapy and regeneration. Journal of Materials Chemistry B Associate Editor, Professor Guoping Chen , presented the award to Professor Chengtie Wu at the award ceremony. More than 800 participants from 33 countries attended TERMIS-AP 2016.

Li-Zhu Wu: JMC A’s newest Associate Editor

Journal of Materials Chemistry A would like to give a warm welcome to our newest Associate Editor, Li-Zhu Wu who joined us last month. Li-Zhu is currently based at the Technical Insitute of Physics and Chemistry in China. She received her Ph.D. from the Institute of Photographic Chemistry, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, under the supervision of Professor Chen-Ho Tung in 1995. From 1995−1998, she worked at the Institute of Photographic Chemistry as an associate professor. After a postdoctoral stay (1997−1998) at the University of Hong Kong working with Professor Chi-Ming Che, she returned to the Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, as a full professor.

Her research interests focus on photochemical conversion, including artificial photosynthesis, visible light catalysis for organic transformation, photoinduced electron transfer, energy transfer and chemical reactions in supramolecular systems. She has published more than 240 peer-reviewed articles, 2 books and 10 book chapters and holds 50 patents. She has been invited to give numerous lectures at international conferences, piquing interest worldwide.

Annual Meeting on Photochemistry 2016

Ryo Nishimura (Ryukoku University) was the Journal of Materials Chemistry A poster prize winner at the Annual Meeting on Photochemistry 2016 which took place on the 6^th– 8^thSeptember in Tokyo, Japan. Ryo was awarded for his poster titled: Photoinduced biomimetic diarylethene microcrystalline surface, mimicking the surface structures of the termite wing.
