Poster Prize winners at MC10

Congratulations to Benjamin de Laune from the University of Birmingham, UK, for winning a Journal of Materials Chemistry poster prize and to Prapatsorn Techawanitchai from Tsukuba University, Japan, for winning a Soft Matter poster prize at the 10th International Conference on Materials Chemistry (MC10).

Benjamin de Laune’s winning poster was on ‘The Structural Characterisation of LiSbO2.’ Techawanitchai‘s winning poster was titled ‘Spatial shrinking of pH-responsive hydrogels utilizing photo-triggered acid generation reaction.‘

Developing materials for pressure sensitive robotic skin

Strongly enhanced sensitivity in elastic capacitive strain sensors: Grafting a conducting polymer to the elastomer backbone increases the capacitance response of capacitive elastic strain sensors by around 50 times say scientists at MIT. The deformation of the sensor strip leads to a geometrical change in its capacitance. Materials based on this approach could be suitable for creating pressure sensitive robotic skin.

Small and sensitive nanoparticles

A new highly sensitive nanoparticle contrast agent for imaging in the body stays in the bloodstream longer and is better at targeting tumours than other nanoparticle contrast agents, say Chinese scientists.

The smaller nanoparticles stay in the bloodstream longer because they don’t accumulate in the liver as quickly as larger nanoparticles

Xintao Shuai from Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangzhou,and colleagues encapsulated individual – or nonclustered – superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles inside micelles composed of folate and a polymer.

The team injected the nanoparticles into the veins of mice tails and followed their progress with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). They found that the micelles increased the nanoparticles’ ability to show the bright and dark contrast between healthy and diseased tissue. The nanoparticles stayed in the bloodstream longer than larger nanoparticles because it took longer for them to accumulate in the liver. By introducing folate, the nanoparticles’ ability to target tumour cells was also increased.
