Journal of Materials Chemistry B is pleased to publish and showcase impactful work in our themed collections, making the latest research in a topic area visible and accessible to the community. In 2024, we were pleased to publish and promote a number of topic-based themed collections from different aspects of materials chemistry for applications in biology and medicine. Functional Framework Materials for Biomedical Applications

Guest edited by Prof. Ross Forgan (University of Glasgow, UK), Dr Ruxandra Gref (Université Paris Saclay, France) and Prof. Jianqiang Liu (Guangdong Medical University, China)

This collection covers all aspects of MOF and COF chemistry related to biological applications. It provides a platform to highlight state-of-the-art developments in a rapidly moving field, including but not limited to, drug delivery (from small molecules through peptides and oligonucleotides to large proteins), all aspects of imaging, theranostics, biological sensing, biocompatibility in vitro and in vivo, hybridisation with other nanomaterials, encapsulation of biological entities (from enzymes to viruses and cells), and other emerging technologies. 

Injectable Hydrogels

This collection, joint with Biomaterials Science, aims to provide a platform for recent developments in the rapidly evolving field of injectable hydrogels and aims to inspire future research in this area.

Bioinspired Functional Supramolecular Systems

This themed collection in Journal of Materials Chemistry B, Guest Edited by Dr. João Borges (University of Aveiro, Portugal), Prof. Patricia Y. W. The scope of this collection loosely aligns with the 2023 International Conference on Nanomaterials in Biology (ICNB 2023), held at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar along with Soft Materials Research Society, from 19–22 November 2023.

Materials Chemistry of Fluorescence Bioimaging

Guest edited by Dr Sijie Chen (The Chinese University of Hong Kong; Karolinska Institutet), Prof. Tony D. James (University of Bath), Dr Apurba L. Koner (IISER Bhopal) and Prof. Ben Zhong Tang (The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen)

This collection aims to provide a platform for recent developments in this rapidly evolving field of fluorescence bioimaging with topics including, but not limited to, fluorescence bioimaging with novel probes, design or synthetic strategies of fluorescent probes, theoretical understanding of fluorescent probe properties and working mechanisms, and new insights into the materials chemistry of fluorescence bioimaging.

Congratulations to the poster prize winners at ACCS15

Journal of Materials Chemistry AB and C, Materials HorizonsMaterials Advances and Nanoscale Advances were delighted to sponsor poster prizes at the recent 15th Asian Conference on Chemical Sensors (ACCS15) which was held in Kitakyushu-city, Japan from November 17 – 20. We would like to congratulate the winners and you can find out more about them below:

Kimiharu Oba received his B.S. degree in engineering from Tohoku University in 2023. He is currently a master’s student at Tohoku University under supervision of Profs. Shiku and Ino. He is developing a new imaging system based on working on electrochemiluminescence for the visualization of cellular function. Currently, He is visualizing the permeability of vascular endothelial and intestinal epithelial cells, comparing it with electrical resistance values, and investigating cellular drug responses.

Kimiharu Oba received a poster prize for his poster entitled ‘Electrochemiluminescence imaging of cell adhesion in gut-on-a-chip’

 

Kwangmin Shim received his B.S. degree from Hongik University in 2014 and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. under the supervision of Professor Jung Hwan Seo at the same institution. His research focuses on the development of micro gas chromatography systems for real-time, on-site analysis of hazardous substances. Currently, he is working on designing an advanced micro gas chromatography system specifically targeting ultra-light hazardous substances.

Kwangmin Shim received a poster prize for his poster entitled ‘A micro GC sensor system for detecting environmental gas mixtures’

 

 

Chia-Ling, Chiang completed her bachelor’s degree in Department of Biomedical Engineering at Chung Yuan Christian University in 2021. She then earned her master’s degree in Department of Biomedical Engineering at National Taiwan University in 2023, joining Dr. Chii-Wann, Lin research team. During her master’s studies, under the co-supervision of Dr. Nan-Fu, Chiu from the Institute and Undergraduate Program of Electro-Optical Engineering at National Taiwan Normal University, she focused on the feasibility study of surface plasmon resonance-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, successfully applying it to detect the heparin-platelet factor 4 protein complex. Currently, she is pursuing a PhD. in the Graduate Institute of Biomedical Electronics and Bioinformatics at National Taiwan University, with research focusing on optical detection techniques for cells and tissues, as well as the design and application development of microfluidic chips.

Chia-Ling Chiang received a poster prize for her poster entitled ‘Challenges in Surface Plasmon Resonance Detection Limits: Precision Measurements Based on Fluid Control and Light Wavelength Stability’

 

Hikaru Tago received his master’s degree in 2024 and is advancing his research in the Ph.D. course of the Bio-Applications and Systems Engineering, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Japan.

His research focuses on developing a pathogen detection system by integrating image analysis with deep learning. He has already published a paper on this topic as the first author in an international academic journal.

Hikaru Tago received a poster prize for his poster entitled ‘High-throughput microbial species identification by image sensor-based colony fingerprinting system’

Journal of Materials Chemistry is delighted to announce an open call for papers to a themed collection on ‘Molecular Crystals: Mechanics and Photonics’ guest edited by Prof. Rajadurai Chandrasekar (University of Hyderabad, India), Prof. Panče Naumov (New York University Abu Dhabi), Prof. Xue-Dong Wang (Soochow University) and Prof. Kristin Hutchins (University of Missouri).

This special issue investigates the extraordinary properties of molecular crystals and their essential role in the management of mechanical and optical energy. It showcases their diverse applications in contemporary scientific and technological domains, such as non-linear optics, sensor technologies, switchable devices, and sophisticated photonic components and circuits. Examples of topics suitable for this collection include, but are not limited to:

Open for Submissions until 28 February 2025

Submissions to the journal should contain chemistry in a materials context and should fit within the scope of Journal of Materials Chemistry C. Please see the journal’s website for more information on the journal’s scope, standards, article types and author guidelines.


How to submit


We strongly encourage authors to submit primary research (Full paper or Communication) to this themed collection. If you would like to submit a Review-type article, please email the Editorial Office at materialsc-rsc.org to provide an outline to be approved by the Editorial Office.

When ready, please submit your article directly to the submissions platform for Journal of Materials Chemistry C where our editors will assess your submission. Please add a note in the ‘Comments to the Editor’ and ‘Themed collections’ sections of the submission mentioning this is a manuscript for the themed collection on ‘Molecular Crystals’ and that it is in response to the ‘Open Call’.

All submissions will be subject to assessment against the journal’s usual scope and standards criteria and sent for peer review only if appropriate. Accepted articles will be published online as soon as they are ready and added to the web collection.

The rapid advancement of science and technology has brought unprecedented opportunities and challenges in various sectors, particularly in healthcare, energy, and the environment. Among the myriad of innovations, the engineering of soft materials stands out as a field of immense potential and transformative impact.

In the realm of healthcare, soft materials have revolutionized drug delivery systems, tissue engineering, and medical devices. Their biocompatibility, flexibility, and tunable properties enable the creation of innovative solutions that improve patient outcomes and quality of life. Energy sustainability is another critical area where soft materials play a pivotal role. From flexible solar cells and energy storage systems to smart grids and energy-efficient devices, the applications are vast and varied. This is the time to explore how the unique characteristics of soft materials contribute to the development of sustainable and renewable energy technologies, paving the way for a greener future. This collection, spanning the Journal of Materials Chemistry A, Journal of Materials Chemistry B, Biomaterials Science, and Molecular Systems Design & Engineering, focuses on the engineering of soft materials for advanced science and technology in healthcare, energy, and the environment, aiming to create a better world for future generations. The scope of this collection also aligns with 6th International Conference on Soft Materials to be held at Universitat Rovira i Virgili, Tarragona, Spain during November 17-20, 2024.

Submissions to the journal should fit within the scope of either Journal of Materials Chemistry A, Journal of Materials Chemistry B, Biomaterials Science or Molecular Systems Design & Engineering and we encourage authors to select the journal they feel is best suited to their work– Please see the journal’s website for more information on the journal’s scope, standards, article types and author guidelines. All manuscripts will undergo the normal initial assessment and peer review processes, if appropriate, in line with the journal’s high standards, managed by the journal editors. Accepted manuscripts will be added to the online collection as soon as they are published and they will be featured in a regular issue of the relevant journal. Please note that peer review or acceptance are not guaranteed.

Welcome to Sofía Calero

Journal of Materials Chemistry A is delighted to welcome Prof. Sofía Calero to the Editorial Board as a Scientific Editor. Please join us in congratulating Sofía on her new role and find out more about her in the interview below:

Sofía Calero is a professor of Applied Physics and chairs the Materials Simulation and Modelling group at the department of Applied Physics and Science Education, at Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands.

Dr. Calero is part of the Board of Directors of the International Adsorption Society and the Spanish Adsorption Group, which she currently chairs. She is the author of over 300 refereed scientific publications  and has been the recipient of numerous prestigious scientific prizes and Awards, including the Marie Curie Excellence Award, ERC Consolidator Grant, Salvador de Madariaga Grant, Dutch VPP-KNAW grant, Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry awards for Young Researchers and later on for Scientific Excellence and the Irene Curie Grant. Her research involves the application of molecular simulation to industrially relevant systems and the development of force fields, algorithms and simulation methods to reverse-engineer properties of porous materials.

What does it mean to you to join the Editorial Board, as a Scientific Editor on Journal of Materials Chemistry A?

Joining the board as a Scientific Editor gives me the opportunity to be in touch with the most advanced science in the materials field. This is great for me, as I understand it would be for all those scientists who enjoy the work they do.

What is the current biggest challenge you face in your field?

There are many. In silico work on materials is now in a very good moment. Computers are faster and we are increasingly immersed in the development of efficient methodologies. Accurate and transferable force fields remain a challenge for many systems. Examples are amorphous and defective materials, challenging properties related to energy production and storage or, in the field of adsorption, large complex adsorbates that can lead to adsorbent phase transitions.

Why do you feel that researchers should choose to publish their work in Journal of Materials Chemistry A?

Because it is a very good journal, addressing some of the most emerging challenges for current materials.

Can you tell us about one of your latest Journal of Materials Chemistry A publications?

It was related to work to evaluate the performance of adsorption heat pumps and cooling systems (https://pubs.rsc.org/en/content/articlelanding/2024/ta/d3ta05258c). To do this, we combined adsorption data of alcohols in MOFs with a thermodynamic model, generating a process that allowed us to obtain, among other properties, the coefficient of performance, the working capacity, the specific heat or cooling effect and the heat released in the adsorption and desorption cycles. Furthermore, our process has the advantage of identifying the optimal conditions for each adsorbent-fluid pair.

Welcome to Dr João Borges

Journal of Materials Chemistry B is delighted to welcome Dr João Borges (University of Aveiro, Portugal) to the Advisory Board. Please join us in congratulating João on his new position and find out more about him in the interview below:

 

Dr. João Borges is a Senior Researcher at the Department of Chemistry and CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials at the University of Aveiro, Portugal. He received his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Porto in 2013. His research focuses on the molecular design, synthesis and development of bioinstructive supramolecular multicomponent biomaterials to interface with living systems. In particular, he has been developing chemically programmable and dynamic supramolecular hydrogels and Layer-by-Layer-driven soft self-assembling biomaterials by combining polysaccharides, self-assembling peptides and nucleic acids, to be used as bioinstructive matrices to control cell functions and as platforms for controlled drug/therapeutics delivery. He has served as a Guest Editor for Journal of Materials Chemistry B in 2024. He has been strongly committed to delivering a positive social impact by being invested in science communication, outreach, and policy and he has been connecting, supporting and empowering early-career scientists in advancing their professional development as a member of the Global Young Academy, Young Academy of Portugal of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, International Younger Chemists Network (IYCN), and European Young Chemists’ Network. He is co-chair of the Global Conversation on Sustainability by IUPAC and the IYCN, and a National Representative of the IYCN Standing Committee at IUPAC.

What does it mean to you to join the Advisory Board of Journal of Materials Chemistry B?

I am truly honored and delighted to join the Advisory Board of the prestigious Journal of Materials Chemistry B, which publishes high quality research at the interface of materials chemistry, biology and medicine. The unique opportunity to join the Advisory Board will enable me to contribute further to the journal and to support the materials chemistry community by several means. Those include contributing with strategic advice, suggestions and recommendations to keep the high standards of quality of the journal, aiding in promoting and publishing impactful materials chemistry research, as well as in proposing themed collections (I am currently co-editing a themed collection) and perspective articles in the field, and helping in shaping the future directions and development of the journal by working closely with peer Editorial Board Members.

What is the current biggest challenge you face in your field?

 One of the biggest challenges for those working at the interface of materials chemistry, biology and medicine is still accelerating translational research by navigating the regulatory issues, i.e. bridging the gap between the lab research and the clinics towards benefiting society. The possibility to enable the translation of pioneering devices, technologies and advanced therapies at a faster pace that could improve the quality and life expectancy of citizens and reduce the healthcare costs is fundamental to address many pressing healthcare challenges that society faces and contribute to sustainable development.

In addition, as a young scientist, one of the major challenges we face is funding which is transversal to several fields and areas of research.

Why do you feel that researchers should choose to publish their work in Journal of Materials Chemistry B?

Journal of Materials Chemistry B is a truly reputable and widely read interdisciplinary forum for publishing cutting-edge research at the interface of chemistry, materials science, biology and medicine, which maximizes the visibility and impact of scientific research. One can publish a wide range of studies at the forefront of materials chemistry research, from a more fundamental science perspective on the design and synthesis of materials to their applications in biology and medicine. In addition, I also very much appreciate the professionalism and commitment of the editorial team, as well as the thoughtful and trustworthy peer-review process which undoubtedly helps to improve the quality of the science communicated by the authors and to increase its impact.

Can you tell us about one of your latest Journal of Materials Chemistry B publications?

 Our most recent publication was an original full paper published in 2023 on the development of marine-origin polysaccharides-based free-standing multilayered membranes as sustainable nanoreservoirs for controlled drug delivery. This manuscript emphasizes the synergistic use of sustainable marine-origin biopolymers, their chemical modification into water-soluble biopolymers at physiological pH, and their processing into robust biocompatible and biodegradable membranes/devices for controlled drug/therapeutics delivery by resorting to the green and cost-effective bottom-up layer-by-layer assembly nanotechnology. The proposed membranes represent promising sustainable nanocarriers for the encapsulation and sustained release of therapeutics in in vitro and in vivo scenarios, holding great promise to be used as implantable biomaterials for modular tissue engineering and regenerative medicine strategies. This manuscript is part of several themed collections, including Journal of Materials Chemistry B Emerging Investigators and  2023 Journal of Materials Chemistry B Most Popular Articles. We are delighted that this manuscript has been well received by the materials chemistry community and has been gathering the attention of the readers of the journal.

Congratulations to the prize winners at Spring E-MRS Symposium G

Journal of Materials Chemistry BMaterials AdvancesNanoscale and Nanoscale Advances were delighted to support two of the young researcher awards at Symposium G: Nanomaterials for Healthcare and Biomedical Engineering at the Spring E-MRS which was held in Strasbourg from May 27 – 31.

The young researcher awardees were selected by a jury of symposium committee and received prizes for their outstanding oral presentations. Please join us in congratulating Preeti Sati (IIT Kanpur) and Quoc Hung Tran (Institute of Material Science of Mulhouse, IS2M, CNRS)  for being awarded these prizes! Preeti Sati hails from the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India. She completed her primary education in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, and completed her M.Tech degree from the Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Technology Madras under the supervision of Prof. S. Ramprabhu. Her M.Tech thesis is titled “Graphene wrapped carbon nanotube based nanofluids for thermal conductivity applications”. Currently, she is pursuing her Ph.D. under Prof. Sri Sivakumar in the Material Science Programme department at Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, where she is working on “In vitro liver Models for drug screening and disease modelling.

Hung Quoc Tran is currently pursuing his PhD in Life Sciences at Université de Haute Alsace, supervised by Dr. Valeriy Luchnikov at IS2M and Professor Thierry Vandamme at CRBS, Université de Strasbourg. His research interests include drug delivery systems, biomaterials, and nanotechnology. His current research focuses on the application of interface modification methods and enzymatic crosslinked biomaterials to enhance drug delivery efficiency in transdermal therapeutic systems, gastroretentive systems, and bio-membrane filtration for medical devices. Previously, he spent several years as a researcher at Lam Dong Medical College, gaining extensive experience working on various projects involving the chemical and biological investigation of natural plants, as well as topical and cosmetic formulation. He obtained a PharmD in Vietnam in 2016 and Master of Pharmaceutical Sciences from Université Paris Cité in 2019


About the symposium


Materials are going to hold an important role in healthcare applications. A symposium (G) on Nanomaterials for Healthcare and Biomedical Engineering, was organized at the European Materials Research Society (EMRS) Spring 2024 meetings in Strasbourg, France. The symposium attracted over 160 contributions from all over the world and was a very successful conference. This theme- Materials for Healthcare- is going to be a major focus at European and global landscapes and the organizers are motivated to continue hosting this symposium in long run. The Royal Society of Chemistry was very happy to sponsor the symposium in terms of two young researcher awards (Ms. Preeti Sati, Ms. Hung Quoc Tran) to motivate and promote the young researchers in the field of materials for healthcare.

Congratulations to the prize winners at Spring E-MRS Symposium T

Materials Horizons and Journal of Materials Chemistry C were delighted to sponsor a best oral presentation and best poster prize at Symposium T: Doping in organic semiconductors: fundamentals, materials and applications at the recent Spring E-MRS 2024 conference which was held in Strasbourg from May 27 – 31.

The winners were decided by a jury of invited speakers and the prizes were presented in an award ceremony at the end of the symposium.

Krzysztof Kotewicz is currently working as a PhD student in Prof. Ergang Wang’s group at Chalmers University of Technology. His research focuses on conjugated materials for organic electronics, in particular light-emitting electrochemical cells.

Beforehand, he completed BSc Eng degree in chemical technology at Gdansk University of Technology in 2018, followed by a joint Nordic Five Tech Master degree in polymer technology at Technical University of Denmark and Chalmers University of Technology in 2021.

Krzysztof was awarded the poster prize sponsored by Journal of Materials Chemistry C for his poster entitled, ‘Acidochromic behavior of TFA-doped IDT-based conjugated polymers containing azo, imine and vinyl bonds’

Joost Kimpel is a PhD student at Chalmers University of Technology under the supervision of Prof. Christian Müller. Before his PhD, he was awarded a MChem in Chemistry from Oxford University (2019) followed by a MSci in Materials Science and Engineering from Tokyo Institute of Technology (2021). He currently works on the simplifying the synthesis of new polythiophenes bearing polar side chains for a variety of organic electronics applications.

Joost was awarded the presentation prize sponsored by Materials Horizons for his presentation entitled, ‘Synthetically Simple Organic Semiconductors for Thermoelectrics Prepared via Direct Arylation Polymerization’

Congratulations to the prize winners at the SPIE Women in Renewable Energy workshop

Journal of Materials Chemistry A Journal of Materials Chemistry C and Materials Horizons were delighted to sponsor the recent Women in Renewable Energy (WiRE) workshop at the SPIE Photonics Europe conference held in Strasbourg, France from 7 – 11 April 2024. The journals sponsored a wonderful networking event that allowed speakers and up-and-coming researchers and students to meet and share ideas in an informal setting.

 

 

Journal of Materials Chemistry A and Materials Horizons also sponsored two prizes for emerging researchers at the conference. These prizes were awarded by Journal of Materials Chemistry C and Materials Advances Editor-in-Chief Natalie Stingelin. Congratulations to Olivier Bardagot and Fabiola Faini for being awarded the prizes!

Promoting women in science is a crucial and necessary step to reach the UN sustainability goals. Regardless of your gender and academic position, you can contribute to accelerating this positive change. This idea of “everyone can and should be involved” is dear to Prof. Olivier Bardagot, a young researcher of the CNRS-University of Strasbourg (France) working in the polymer department of the ICPEES institute led by Prof. Nicolas Leclerc. Physicist by training (Phelma and Imperial College London), Olivier opened himself to organic synthesis and polymer design thanks to the mentorship of Prof. Renaud Demadrille during his PhD (CEA Grenoble, France). With this rare background, he thrived under the supervision of Prof. Natalie Banerji by developing organic electrochemical transistors during a 3-year post-doctoral stay at the University of Bern (Switzerland). Established as a permanent PI since a year, Olivier is now developing a diverse research group where the potential of scientists can flourish in a widely interdisciplinary environment supported by the Strasbourg Organic Electronic Consortium (STELORG). His group is currently focusing on controlling the nanoscale and microscale organization of semiconducting polymers to optimize their chemical and electrochemical doping for thermoelectric and bioelectronic applications. Fabiola Faini is a Ph.D. fellow in Giulia Grancini’s group at the University of Pavia, Italy. She obtained her master’s degree in Physics of Matter in 2021, working on the optical properties of low-dimensional perovskite thin films. Her research interest spans from fundamental photophysical investigation of charge carriers dynamics in low-dimensional perovskite thin films to their rational application in operating perovskite solar cells. With her talk titled “Tilting the crystal growth of 2D Perovskites: a tool for breaking wide band gap perovskite solar cell efficiency”, she has been awarded a prize by Journal of Materials Chemistry A during the SPIE conference.

Congratulations to the poster prize winners at the SupraLife Second School

The SupraLife Second School took place from 10 – 15 March 2024 at the University of Aveiro in Portugal. Journal of Materials Chemistry BMaterials Advances and Biomaterials Science were pleased to sponsor three poster prizes at the event. Congratulations to our poster prize winners!

1st place: Catherine Abild Meyer (Aarhus University, Denmark)

Poster title: ‘On the communication between nuclei and mitochondria in a hydrogel environment’

 

Cathrine Abild Meyer is a PhD student at Aarhus University, Denmark, under the supervision of Prof. Brigitte Städler. She obtained her BSc (2019) and MSc degree (2022) in Nanoscience from Aarhus University, Denmark. During her undergraduate study, she gained experience in cell biology and synthetic biology while studying the interaction of polymer-lipid hybrid vesicles with astrocytes. Her current research focuses on the communication from mitochondria to the cell nucleus called mitochondrial retrograde signaling. In her research, she aims to create artificial minimal cells consisting of purified mitochondria and nuclei from donor cells encapsulated into hydrogel beads to study the mitochondrial retrograde signaling without interference from the complex network inside the mammalian cells.

 

2nd place: Margarida Sacramento (University of Aveiro, Portugal)

Poster title: ‘Adhesive coacervate inks for in situ 3D printing’

Margarida Sacramento is a PhD student conducting her research within the COMPASS group at CICECO – Aveiro Institute of Materials, University of Aveiro, under the supervision of Professor João Mano.

Her current research focuses on developing and characterizing adhesive biomaterials using naturally derived polymers and polyphenols for various biomedical applications, including in situ 3D printing. Prior to her doctoral studies, Margarida obtained her bachelor’s (2017) and master’s (2019) degrees in biotechnology from the same institution. During this period, she worked on improving the performance of magnetic quaternary chitosan nanoparticles for the removal of water pollutants.  Driven by the passion for science, Margarida aspires to pursue a future career likely at the interface of cellular biology and biomaterials science.

 

3rd place: Joana Calvario (ITQB-NOVA, Portugal)

Poster title: ‘Investigating Amino Acid Enrichments and Patterns: Understanding Biases in Liquid-Liquid Phase Separation’

 

Joana Calvário is a Ph.D. student at Ana Pina’s Bioinspired Peptide Systems Lab, in ITQB-NOVA, Portugal. She has a Bachelor’s in biochemistry and a Master’s in biotechnology from NOVA School of Science and Technology, and her academic journey reflects an enduring curiosity about fundamental processes underlying biological systems. From utilizing bioinformatics in protein stability studies to enhancing electronic nose biosensors with Odorant Binding Proteins, Joana’s research path has been diverse. Fascinated by compartmentalization’s role in biochemical reactions, she now focuses her Ph.D. on understanding liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) in membraneless organelles, where she aims to unravel the molecular principles governing LLPS. Her research aims to create artificial functional compartments inspired by natural systems, shedding light on LLPS’s impact on the origin of proteins’ functions and enzymatic activity evolution. Joana’s ultimate goal is to make significant contributions to understanding LLPS dynamics in nature, offering novel insights into fundamental biological processes.
