– Recognise individuals or small research groups which make an outstanding contribution to sustainable development by applying green and sustainable chemistry.
– Promote innovation in chemistry and chemicals that will deliver clear improvements in the sustainable production and use of chemicals and chemical products.
– Demonstrate that chemistry and chemicals can play a central role in delivering society’s needs, while minimizing and solving environmental problems.
The Award is open to individuals or teams of up to three persons. The deadline for nominations is 1st March 2014! To find out more, or to nominate a colleague or team, please visit the website.
The 2nd International Symposium on Green Chemistry Renewable Carbon and Eco-Efficient Processes (ISGC2)
The 2nd International Symposium on Green Chemistry Renewable Carbon and Eco-Efficient Processes (ISGC2) was held from May 21–24th in La Rochelle, France. The conference aimed to cover the crucial problems arising from the conversion of renewable carbon and also the recent advances in the search of innovative processes for the conversion of biomass and wastes with high eco-efficiency.
The speakers included Green Chemistry Editorial Board members Professors Walter Leitner, Chao-Jun Li, Paul Anastas and Shu Kobayashi, and Advisory Board members Professors James Clark, Avelino Corma and Philip Jessop.
Professor Walter Leitner, Chair of the Green Chemistry Editorial Board, and Sarah Ruthven, Editor of Green Chemistry, presented the Green Chemistry sponsored poster prizes. The winners were Cinthia Mena Duran for her poster ‘Applications of Starbons’ and Guangyi Li for the poster ‘Synthesis of renewable diesel with 2-methylfuran and hydroxyacetone’. Congratulations to Cinthia and Guangyi on receiving these prizes.
Green Chemistry is pleased to be publishing a themed issue containing selected papers from the ISGC2 conference, which will be appearing later this year.
Green Solvents for Synthesis 2012
Sarah Ruthven, Editor of Green Chemistry, attended the 2012 Green Solvents for Synthesis Conference, held from the 8th-10th October 2012 in Boppard, Germany. The theme of this year’s installment of the biennial conference series was Advanced Concepts for Solution Phase Chemistry and Processes.
Professor Walter Leitner, Chair of the Green Chemistry Editorial Board, was Chairman of the organising committee, which also included Advisory Board members Professor Kenneth Seddon and Professor Peter Wasserscheid.
The focus of the conference was centre around energy-efficient processes, selectivity control for waste prevention, alternative and efficient use of raw materials, activation and capture of CO2and integrated reaction and separation processes. The 3-day programme included 12 Keynote lectures delivered by internationally renowned experts and a poster session, where three of the top posters were awarded with prizes by the organising committee. One of these prizes was sponsored by Green Chemistry, and the recipient of was Mr Victor López-López for his poster on “Energy-efficient CO2-capture with solutions based on ionic liquids” (pictured second from the left). Many congratulations to Victor on receiving this prize.
Sustainability in Chemical Synthesis Conference
Anna Simpson, Deputy Editor of Green Chemistry (pictured below, centre) attended the Sustainability in Chemical Synthesis Conference, held at the Chemistry Department of TU Kaiserslautern from the 16th -18th September.
This meeting was organised by the Sustainable Chemistry Section of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (German Chemical Society, GDCh). The series was started in 2007 to bring scientists from the community of sustainable chemistry together for exchanging ideas and new scientific insights.
The 2012 scientific programme put an emphasis on state-of-the-art organic synthesis by covering, in particular, methods of carbon-carbon, carbon-hetroatom, and carbon-hydrogen bond formation. Topics on chemicals from biomass were similarly covered as was the invention of new catalytic processes for achieving valuable new chemical transformations.
The Green Chemistry poster prize was won by Oliver Kreye from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (far right in picture above) and it was presented by Professor Lukas Gooßen, co-organiser of the conference (far left in picture above).
The full title of the winning poster was The first catalytic Lossen rearrangement: Sustainable access to Carbamates and Amines, authored by: Oliver Kreye, Sarah Wald and Michael Meier. You may be interested in ‘meeting our author’ Michael Meier, click here.
