Apps with real impact

Some apps have real impact, we’ve just sponsored two such apps.

Green Solvents and Lab Solvents are innovative apps for the iOS and Android platforms that list solvents and their scores versus various environmentally relevant properties. They are based on published data that had not been widely disseminated in conveniently available media. The apps are freely available and were developed by Dr. Alex M. Clark at Molecular Materials Informatics (MMI, Montreal, Canada) after an initial idea from Dr. Sean Ekins at Collaborations in Chemistry (CIC, Fuquay Varina, USA).

“These apps are first class examples of how green chemistry data can be delivered to a mobile device and complement other apps such as ChemSpider Mobile, which we have developed with Alex.” said Antony J. Williams, VP Strategic Development for the RSC. “We are honoured to support such efforts that raise awareness of green chemistry and educate the public and serve a need for scientists in the lab”.

“It is really wonderful validation of these apps that an organisation such as the RSC would sponsor Green Solvents and Lab Solvents and this will help to further raise their visibility to scientists globally” said Alex Clark, owner of Molecular Materials Informatics.

Find out more and download the apps today: Green Solvents and Lab Solvents

RSC launches Materials Horizons journal

The new home for rapid reports of exceptional significance on innovative materials

Materials HorizonsRoyal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Publishing is delighted to announce Materials Horizons, a new peer-reviewed journal for first reports of exceptional significance across the breadth of materials research.

Announcing the launch, James Milne, Executive Director of RSC Publishing, said: “Materials science is an expansive and rapidly evolving field of real relevance to the chemical sciences. Only last week, the UK Science Minister, David Willetts, announced £73 million of investment for new facilities and equipment to support research in advanced materials in the UK.

“We are delighted to support the breadth of the global materials research community with this new journal. Materials Horizons will be a world class journal characterised by the quality, ease and speed of publication, and innovative technology for which RSC Publishing is renowned. As a not-for-profit publisher, this new addition to our portfolio will also go towards facilitating the RSC’s aim to advance the chemical sciences for the benefit of society.”

The journal will open for submissions in April 2013 and the first issue will be published in late 2013.

Materials Horizons will be:

  • High impact – only publishing the most novel and exciting advances
  • A leader – the Editorial Board, led by Seth Marder (Georgia Institute of Technology, USA), will drive scientific development, with Scientific Editors helping to maintain scientific standards
  • Interdisciplinary – showcasing the best research at the cutting-edge interface of materials science with chemistry, physics, biology and engineering
  • Internationally visible free access to all content published during 2014 and 2015, guaranteeing maximum exposure
  • Rapid – speedy reviewing and publication in as little as a day after acceptance with our Accepted Manuscript option

Seth Marder, Professor of Chemistry and Materials Science and Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, USA, has been appointed Editorial Board Chair of the new journal. “It is a very exciting opportunity for me to work with the team at the RSC to help launch Materials Horizons, a new kind of society journal geared to rapid publication of truly top calibre, first reports of materials research broadly defined,” he says. “Importantly, while published by a chemical society, the journal will seek to serve the broader materials community, by welcoming papers that cover the gamut of materials research, providing a forum for editorials on the status and future of materials research, and content geared specifically to educating and engaging younger researchers in the field.  With this, we hope to make Materials Horizons an indispensable resource for all researchers in the materials community.”

Further details will be released over the coming weeks – make sure you don’t miss out by registering your details to receive the regular Materials Horizons newsletter.

Royal Society of Chemistry to publish The Merck Index

The Merck IndexThe famous “bible” of chemistry, The Merck Index, is to join the highly acclaimed publishing portfolio of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

The Merck Index has been considered the standard chemistry reference work for generations of professionals and has sold over one million copies worldwide. From April 2013, the Royal Society of Chemistry will take over its publication and launch the 15th edition.

Dr James Milne, RSC Executive Director, publishing, said: “The Merck Index is a quality product with a peerless pedigree but, being familiar to the scientific community worldwide, it is also emblematic of our organisation’s rapidly-expanding international presence and influence. We know The Merck Index will be a valuable addition to the products and services the RSC offers its customers. Now we are looking forward eagerly to developing The Merck Index for the digital future.”

The RSC already plans significant development of The Merck Index online – beginning with offering all buyers of the 15th edition one year’s free access to a newly-developed online version. The RSC will continue to develop The Merck Index to provide a valuable, trusted and relevant resource for scientists and researchers.

To find out more about the 15th edition of The Merck Index visit the website and register your interest to receive further updates.

Fall MRS Boston: were you a winner?

It was great to meet old friends and new at the RSC Publishing booth at the 2012 MRS Fall Meeting in Boston last week.

RSC Publishing boothAfter the positive feedback we received last year, we opted for another environmentally friendly cardboard booth. We had a range of top titles on display, including Energy & Environmental Science, Nanoscale and our new journal Biomaterials Science.

Lots of visitors were keen to learn more about Journal of Materials Chemistry, which, in 2013, continues as three journals: Journal of Materials Chemistry A, B and C

And, as always, our books proved popular, in particular our new Smart Materials book series and Chocolate as Medicine.

Anyone for Open Access?

We have a great initiative, and we want to extend it to the rest of the world.

Launched in the Summer, our Gold for Gold pilot, enabling RSC Gold subscribers in the UK to publish RSC papers free-of-charge via Gold Open Access (OA), was a direct reaction to researchers being asked to publish OA, but without necessarily having the funding to do so.

Following the pilot’s popularity (at least 5 high-profile institutions have already taken advantage of Gold for Gold) we don’t want others to miss out. So, from now on, all RSC Gold subscribing institutions will be rewarded with voucher codes to publish OA articles at no cost.

This is an excellent opportunity for authors to increase the visibility of your quality research.

For more information, go to our Gold for Gold website. And, to find out exactly how the process will work, take a look at our FAQs.

RSC Databases become online-only

RSC Publishing is committed to disseminating chemical science information in the most relevant and timely way possible.

Print issues of the RSC’s databases have become less and less valuable to our readers, therefore our databases will be available online only from January 2013.

RSC databases provide rapid and cost-effective access to key developments in the field, so free up your shelves and enjoy the dynamic search capabilities, fast indexing and cutting-edge content of RSC databases online:

(NB. Print-only database Chromatography Abstracts is ceasing publication at the end of 2012 and will not be available for renewal. All Chromatography Abstracts content will still be accessible online, as part of Analytical Abstracts.)

RSC Databases

Contact sales@rsc.org to discuss subscription opportunities and discounted packages, or find out more at www.rsc.org/databases.
