UKSB 2016

The UK Society for Biomaterials will be holding their 15th annual conference from the 30th June – 1st July at the University of Westminster, London.

Journal of Materials Chemistry B and Biomaterials Science will be providing sponsorship in the form of a poster prize certificate and a year’s free access to the journal.

Professor Ipsita Roy from the University of Westminster is organising the conference and has included some special features for this year which are below:

  • A dedicated Larry Hench session;
  • ReBiostent session (an EU FP7 project); (on biodegradable drug eluting stents)
  • KTN session dedicated to the industry/clinicians and
  • A dedicated cell oriented session for TCES/ECPS members.

Professor Roy intends to promote a ‘varied experience of both excellent research in the area of biomaterials including state of art, innovative work with synthetic and natural polymers, complemented with their application in the production of near to market products including medical devices, tissue engineering scaffolds and controlled delivery constructs’. BiTERM 2016

BiTERM

The Society for Biomaterials and Artificial Organs (SBAOI) is one of the leading societies in India promoting healthcare related research. The annual meeting of SBAOI India has over the years become one of the premier biomaterials & biomedical related conferences in the country, and provides a great opportunity for professional development & networking in the field. This year, the annual conference BiTERM-2016 is being organized by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi at New Delhi over April 15 – 17, 2016.

BiTERM-2016 will not only offer a platform for presenting innovative & novel research, but also promises to be preferential ground for exchange of ideas with experts across the world, ultimately leading to scientific and technological development. The event will cover a wide range of topics that are shaping the future of biomedical research.

2016 Biomaterials Science Lectureship awarded to Fan Yang

We are delighted to announce Assistant Professor Fan Yang (Stanford University) as the 2016 Biomaterials Science Lectureship winner.

The Biomaterials Science Lectureship is an annual award that honours an early-stage career researcher for their significant contribution to the biomaterials field. The recipient is selected by the Biomaterials Science Editorial Board from a list of candidates nominated by the community.

Fan Yang is currently an Assistant Professor at Stanford University in the Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery and Bioengineering, and Director of Stanford Stem Cells and Biomaterials Engineering Laboratory. Her research seeks to understand how microenvironmental cues regulate stem cell fate, and to develop novel biomaterials and cell-based therapeutics for tissue regeneration, with special focus on treating musculoskeletal diseases, cardiovascular diseases and cancer.

Prior to joining Stanford, Dr. Yang received her Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Prof. Jennifer Elisseeff’s lab at Johns Hopkins University, and then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Prof. Robert Langer at MIT. In recognition of her innovation, she was selected to be one of 2011 TR35 Global list honorees by Technology Review, which recognizes the world’s 35 most outstanding innovators who are younger than 35.

Dr. Yang has also been recognized by multiple awards from both federal agencies and private foundations including the NSF CAREER Award, the NIH R01 award, Tools and Technologies Development Award from California Institute of Regenerative Medicine, Young Investigator Award from Alliance for Cancer and Gene Therapy, National Scientist Development Award from American Heart Association, Rising Star award from BMES-CMBE, Mission for Learning Faculty Scholar Award in Pediatric Translational Medicine, Donald E. and Delia B. Baxter Faculty Scholar Award, the McCormick Faculty Award, Stanford Asian American Faculty Award, the 3M Nonteured Faculty Award and the Basil O’Connor Starter Scholar Research Award.

Registration now open for TERMIS-EU 2016!

The European Chapter Meeting of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society 2016 (TERMIS-EU) will be taking place from 28 June to 1 July 2016 at Uppsala Concert and Congress in Uppsala, Sweden.

The theme of the conference will be “Towards Future Regenerative Therapies” and will cover the latest advances in biomaterials, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. One-day meeting on Self-Assembling Materials for Biomedicine

We are pleased to announce the RSC Faraday Division sponsored one-day meeting on Self-Assembling Materials for Biomedicine, taking place on 14th April 2016 at Shinfield Grange, Berkshire, UK.

This meeting will bring together researchers using polymers and biomaterials in several applications relevant to healthcare – specifically in the fields of tissue engineering, regenerative medicine and drug delivery. Different approaches relying on self-assembly of polymers, peptides and other biomaterials to create novel nanostructures with biomedical activity will be discussed by prominent researchers in the field presenting their state-of-the-art findings. The venue is a delightful country residence on the outskirts of Reading, UK, with easy transport access.

Biomaterials Science awards best student talk prize at the 37th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Biomaterials

Congratulations to Yuto Amano, a student in the Michiya Matsusaki group at Osaka University, Japan, who was awarded the Biomaterials Science award for the best student oral presentation at the 37th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Biomaterials.

The meeting was held on 9-10th November 2015, in Kyoto, Japan and Yuto was given the award by Professor Yasuhiko Tabata of Kyoto University and Japanese Society for Biomaterials Committee Chair.

2016 Biomaterials Science Lectureship now open!

Do you know an early-career researcher who deserves recognition for their contribution to the biomaterials field?

Now is your chance to put them forward for the accolade they deserve.

Biomaterials Science is pleased to announce that nominations are now being accepted for its Biomaterials Science Lectureship 2016. This annual award was established in 2014 to honour an early-stage career scientist who has made a significant contribution to the biomaterials field.

2015 – Joel Collier, University of Chicago, USA

2014 – Suzie Pun, University of Washington, USA

Qualification

To be eligible for the Biomaterials Science Lectureship, the candidate should be in the earlier stages of their scientific career, typically within 7 years of attaining their first independent research position, and will have made a significant contribution to the field.

Description

The recipient of the award will be asked to present a lecture three times, one of which will be located in the home country of the recipient. The Biomaterials Science Editorial Office will provide the sum of £1000 to the recipient for travel and accommodation costs.

The recipient will be presented with the award at one of the three award lectures. They will also be asked to contribute a lead article to the journal and will have their work showcased on the back cover of the issue in which their article is published.

Selection

The recipient of the award will be selected and endorsed by the Biomaterials Science Editorial Board.

Nominations

Those wishing to make a nomination should send details of the nominee, including a brief C.V. (no longer than 2 pages A4) together with a letter (no longer than 1 page A4) supporting the nomination, to the Biomaterials Science Editorial Office by 29th January 2016. Self-nomination is not permitted.
