5th Workshop on Microfluidics

The 5th Workshop on Microfluidics was held on the National Center for Research on Energy and Materials (CNPEM) in Campinas, Sao Paulo (Brazil), from July 23-24, 2015. Since 2011, the workshop has brought together young students, researchers, and companies from different states of Brazil to discuss topics related to fundamentals, fabrication technologies, innovations, and applications in microfluidic science. This field has been spread out around different regions of Brazil presenting outstanding contributions for microfabrication and microfluidic technologies.

The event was supported by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) for the third time. Representing the scientific board of the V Workshop on Microfluidics, Prof. Charles Henry from Colorado State University, USA, presented the awards to the three best works which were awarded by the RSC .

Analyst Award was awarded to Eduardo L. Rossini, from Universidade Estadual Paulista, Araraquara (Brazil), for the work “Simultaneous determination of uric acid and creatinine using μPAD”. Furthermore, Roger Cardoso Moreira, from Universidade Federal de Goiás, Goiânia (Brazil), received the Analytical Methods Award for the work “Adaptation of a commercial electrophoresis system for quaternary amines separation in microchips”. Lastly, the Lab on a Chip Award was given to Houari Cobas Gomez, from Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas, Sao Paulo (Brazil), for the work “3D focalization LTCC microfluidic device for nanoparticle synthesis by nanoprecipitation”.

Conference report: The 4th Workshop on Microfluidics

Posted on behalf of Angelo Luiz Gobbi, conference organiser of the 4th Workshop on Microfluidics

The 4th Workshop on Microfluidics was held at the National Center for Research on Energy and Materials (CNPEM) in Campinas, Sao Paulo (Brazil) from July 24-25, 2014. Since 2011, the workshop has brought together young students, researchers, and companies from different states of Brazil to discuss topics related to the fundamentals, fabrication technologies, innovations, and applications in microfluidic science. This field has been spread out around different regions of the Brazil with great contributions for fabrication technologies as well as innovative developments and diverse applications.

For the second time, the event was supported by The Royal Society of Chemistry. Representing the scientific board of the IV Workshop on Microfluidics, Prof. Dr. José Alberto Fracassi da Silva presented the awards to the two best posters which were granted by Royal Society of Chemistry.

Furthermore, the Analytical Methods Award” was considered for the innovative and original work on Analytical Science. The winner was Mr. Paulo de Tarso Garcia from University of Goias. Mr. Garcia is a Ph.D. candidate under supervision of Dr. Wendell K. T. Coltro and he was also awarded with a book entitled: “The Cosmic-Chemical Bond ”. The work presented by Mr. Paulo describes the preparation and application of paper-based microfluidic devices for clinical assays. Metallic stamp was used to delimit the microfluidic regions. The device was applied for quantification of nitrite, bovine serum albumin, glucose, and urea.

The Lab on a Chip Award”, in turn, was considered for the most innovative work in the field of microfluidics. It was given to Ms. Debora Freitas do Nascimento, a Ph.D. candidate at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, under supervision of Prof. Dr. Maria de Fátima Vieira Marques. Ms. Nascimento was also prized with a Tablet. The developed work relies on the use of a microfluidic system to assemble monodisperse droplets containing poly(ethylene glycol), chitosan, and alginate with isoniazid as encapsulant.

Sincerely yours,

Angelo Luiz Gobbi

Analytical Methods Poster Prize: ICAVS-7 Conference, Kobe, Japan

Analytical Methods Poster Prize: ICAVS-7 Conference, Kobe, Japan

We are please to announce that the Analytical Methods Poster Prize from the recent ICAVS-7 Conference held in August 2013 in Kobe, Japan has been awarded to Satoko Tanimoto.

Satoko has just finished working at Imperial College London as the AHRC/ESPRC Science and Heritage programme post-doctoral fellow from October 2010. She previously completed a 3 year Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship at the Department of Conservation and Scientific Research, British Museum, where she worked on a number of projects, using a range of analytical techniques, including the technical study of a large set of Italian Renaissance drawings that were included in the exhibition, Fra Angelico to Leonardo: Italian Renaissance Drawings, which took place from April to July 2010. This was a collaborative project with the Gabinetto Disegno e Stampe degli Uffizi.

Satoko has a first degree from the Kobe Pharmaceutical University (Chemistry and Pharmacy/Pharmacology) in Japan and a MSc in Environmental Sciences and Management from the University of San Francisco. She also spent a year as an intern at the Getty Conservation Institute, before completing her PhD research at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London. During her PhD, Satoko also spent several extended periods working in the Science Section at the Victoria and Albert Museum, as a tutor in the Conservation Department at the City and Guilds Art School and with the Courtauld Institute of Art on wall paintings in Ahhichatragarh Fort/Nagaur Fort, India.

Satoko is looking forward to pass on her experience and knowledge to MA students at the Conservation of Wall Paintings Department, the Courtauld Institute of Art in her next post.

Satoko’s recent AHRC/EPSRC Science and Heritage project at the Imperial College was to explore the application of micro ATR-FTIR spectroscopic imaging to cultural heritage samples from the collaborative partners, The National Gallery London and the British Museum, and to develop aspects of the methodology.

Characterisation of the materials of cultural heritage collections is vital in understanding how they were made and used, their conservation history, origin and mechanisms of material decay, and how deterioration has affected appearance. Conventional FTIR microscopy is of proven value in this field, but as samples typically need to be in the form of tiny powdered scrapings, precise information about location of materials within the microstructure of an object is lost. Analysis of samples prepared as cross-sections is useful since the distribution of materials within the layer structure reflects the working practices of the artist/maker and helps to differentiate between original and later materials, as well as deterioration products. Reflectance FTIR imaging has been used for this purpose but the spatial resolution is generally not sufficient. The higher spatial resolution achieved with ATR-FTIR imaging has transformed the appeal of FTIR techniques for this type of sample, and has the potential to become routine for the simultaneous characterization of organic and inorganic materials directly on cross-sections.

Congratulations to Sakoto for her winning poster!

Analytical Methods Poster Prize

Congratulations to Sangeeta Tanna from De Montfort University, who was awarded an Analytical Methods poster prize at the recent Analytical Research Forum held at Loughborough University.

Sangeeta’s poster described her work on a dried blood spot sampling system which enables the measurement and monitoring of drug levels in newborn babies, to inform future drug doses. This was tested on captopril, a drug used for the treatment of heart failure. Well done Sangeeta!
