Welcome to issue 1 of JAAS 2013!

The first issue of JAAS for 2013 is finally online!

To start with, our editorial from the JAAS Editor May Copsey and the Chair of JAAS Editorial Board Frank Vanhaecke, summaries the great success of JAAS in promoting the most recent advances in the field of atomic and elemental analytical techniques in a wide range of applications.

Then we have these new interesting covers for you to enjoy the beginning of the year.

The Rembrandt painting “An old man in military costume”, from the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum, features the outside front cover of this issue.  Matthias Wilhelm Alfeld and his group from the University of Antwerp created a “free impression” of a previously discovered hidden portrait, by using a mobile X-ray tube based system and two synchrotron-based setups. The full-scale mock-up of the painting obtained reproduces as closely as possible the pigments and the stratigraphy of the original painting.

The 11th Chinese Analytical Chemistry Annual Meeting Held in Qingdao

The 11th Chinese Analytical Chemistry Annual Meeting was held on October 26-29, 2012, at Qingdao International Convention Center. This is the most important professional meeting on Analytical Chemistry in China, which is held once every three years. The meeting was sponsored by the Chinese Chemical Society, the Chinese Spectroscopy Society and the Geological Society of China, and was organized by Qingdao University of Science & Technology and Linyi University.

The Chairman was Prof. Erkang Wang (Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, CAS), and the Vice Chairmen were Prof. Hongyuan Chen (Academician of CAS), Prof. Zhifang Chai (Academician of CAS), Prof. Ruqin Yu (Academician of CAS), Prof. Shouzhuo Yao (Academician of CAS), Prof. Jincai Zhao (Academician of CAS), Prof. Yukui Zhang (Academician of CAS), Prof. Guibin Jiang (Academician of CAS), Prof. Shaojun Dong (Academician of CAS), Prof. Guofang Pang (Academician of CAS). The Symposium Science Committee was composed of 108 professors. The Organizing Committee was chaired by Prof. Kui Jiao, and the Vice Chairmen were Prof. Qiankun Zhuang, Prof. Xiurong Yang, Prof. Hangting Chen, and Prof. Shusheng Zhang.

More than 1500 people from 200 units including the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the Chinese Academy of Sciences, various universities and companies attended the meeting. The meeting comprised 1148 papers and 232 poster presentations. There were 9 different sessions: Atomic Spectroscopy, Molecular Spectroscopy and Spectrum Analysis, Electroanalysis, Nanoscience-based Analysis, Biochemistry Analysis, Chromatography, New Analytical Instruments, Youth Forum and National Fund Forum. The meeting accommodated 13 plenary lectures, 219 invited lectures and 104 oral presentations. This conference has provided an opportunity for the academic exchange, and will promote the development of Analytical Chemistry in China.

SCIX 2012

The SCIX 2012 conference* was held on September 30 – October 5, 2012, in Kansas City, MO, USA. The meeting covered all aspects of analytical chemistry and over 730 papers were presented in ~100 symposia and 5 poster sessions. More than 900 attendees enjoyed plenary and award lectures by distinguished experts, a large exhibition, and several exiting evening events. Kansas City offered a lot of opportunities for scientific exchange, networking, and good food including barbecue and steak.

The atomic section of SCIX was strong this year with a total of 12 sessions. A highlight in program were two sessions organized by the Analytical Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) on the “current status of the analytical sciences: focus on human health”. Thanks to the organizers (editor of the analytical journals at RSC Dr. May Copsey, publisher Dr. Niamh O’Connor, and Chair of the ACS Analytical Division and member of the JAAS advisory board Dr. David Koppenaal), experts in the field accepted the invitation to Kansas City and presented their latest results in health-related research (see below for a list of recent publications). Topics included e.g. elemental mass spectrometry in the clinic, in vivo diagnostics, biomedical applications, the fate of nanoparticles, and single cell analysis by mass cytometry. These sessions were supported by ACS, RSC, JAAS, and Metallomics.

The FACSS Innovation Award was presented to Prof. Rohit Bhargava, University of Illinois, for the advancement of infrared microscopy instrumentation by theory and computation. Also, JAAS editorial board member Prof. Gary M. Hieftje received an ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry Award. JAAS advisory board member Prof. Ralph Sturgeon was awarded the 2012 Lester W. Strock Award. Reports on the award sessions will follow in a separate blog entry.

It is also important to acknowledge the work of young investigators. This years SAS Student Poster Award recipients are:

23rd ICP-MS User Meeting and 10th Symposium on Mass Spectrometry Methods for Trace Element Analysis

The 23rd ICP-MS User Meeting was held jointly with the 10th Symposium on Mass Spectrometry Methods for Trace Element Analysis on September 10-12 at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Tulln, Austria. The meeting is a biannual event of analytical chemists held in Germany/Austria/Switzerland. This year it was organized by Thomas Prohaska, Stephan Hann, Johanna Irrgeher, and member of the editorial board Gunda Köllensperger.

Over 120 attendees discussed fundamentals, applications, and future trends in ICP-MS. The meeting was a great venue for scientific exchange between ICP-MS users in academia and industry as well as instrument manufactures. Over the course of three days, young investigators and established scientists presented highlights of their research and discussed cutting-edge topics and challenging issues in 30 oral and 17 poster presentations. Lectures were held in three main sessions, materials testing, biological applications, and environmental applications. Instrument manufactures had the opportunity to present features and benefits of their ICP mass spectrometers in a dedicated vendor session and the exhibition hall. Posters could be assessed for the entire period of the user meeting with scheduled poster sessions to meet the authors.

We are very much looking forward to the next ICP-MS User Meeting, which will we held in Germany in 2014. Daniel Pröfrock and his team will organize the event at the Helmholtz Centre in Geesthacht.

On the inside front cover we have an image from Sergei Butorin, Uppsala University, who with colleagues from France and Sweden have been studying the valence bands of copper to enable distinguishing between different monovalent copper compounds. In this paper former Chair of the Editorial Board Detlef Günther, J. M. Koornneef and colleagues in Switzerland and Germany, have been studying the the potential of femtosecond laser ablation multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (fs-LA-MC-ICPMS) for in situ analysis of U–Th disequilibria in titanite. The determination of U-series isotope compositions are used in a wide range of geological materials such as carbonates, iron oxides, opal, and zircon. Flores from the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, Brazil, and colleagues have been looking at a method based on microwave-induced combustion (MIC) and applied it to the digestion of active pharmaceutical ingredients. They used this to determine bromine and iodine by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). This test can be used to test for halogen impurities in pharmaceutical products.
