The 2nd National Conference on Mass Spectrometric Analysis of Chinese Chemical Society Held in Hangzhou

The 2nd National Conference on Mass Spectrometric Analysis (CNMS) of Chinese Chemical Societywas held on October 16-19, 2015 in Hangzhou, China. This conference was hosted by the Chinese Chemical Society and the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). The 2nd NCMS was organized by Mass Spectrometry Division of Chinese Chemical Society and the Department of Chemistry of Zhejiang University. More than 1000 conventioneers including scientists, experts and students attended the conference.

The opening ceremony of the conference was chaired by Prof.Yuanjiang Pan from Zhejiang University. Prof. Jianhong Luo, the vice-president of Zhejiang University, Prof. Hongyuan Chen from Nanjing University, and Prof. Qiankun Zhuang from NSFC gave the opening speeches.

During this symposium, 17 plenary lecturers including 5 academicians, 56 invited speakers, 54 contributed speakers and 26 young scientists presented their latest academic achievements in mass spectrometry, which were related to instrumentation developments, mass spectrometric fundamentals, as well last to he development and application of mass spectrometric technologies. 16 excellent young scientists and 30 excellent posters were awarded. The meeting provided a great opportunity for extensive academic and technical exchanges on research progress in the hope of promoting the development of mass spectrometry in China. In addition, many analytical instrument manufacturers, including Shimadzu, Agilent, Hitachi, Bruker and so on, exhibited their relevant instruments and technical application data.

The well-organized conference was highly appreciated by the attendees and sponsors, which pushes forward mass spectrometric research and applications and promotes the development of Science and Technology in mass spectrometry.

Journal of Analytical Atomic Spectrometry 30th Anniversary Event

The Journal of Analytical Atomic Spectrometry (JAAS) celebrated its 30th Anniversary after the closing ceremony of the 6thAsia-Pacific Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry (2015APWC) at Xiamen (China) on May 22rd. At the Event, Deputy Editor Rebecca Brodie recalled the origin of JAAS, recounted its history and development, and outlined its current status. With the mutual support of atomic spectrometrists and JAAS, the Journal is ranked as the top journal for original research in Atomic Spectrometry. Prof. Gary Hieftje made a speech representing the Editorial Board and International Advisory Committees of JAAS. He thanked JAAS’s contributors and readers for all their support and hoped for its continuation. He also expressed the appreciation of the JAAS board, the conference attendees, and the foreign visitors towards the 2015APWC organizers and staff for their excellent organization of the event and for their hospitality.

The 6th Asia-Pacific Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistryheld in May 19th- 22rd at Xiamen, China

The 6th Asia-Pacific Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry (2015APWC) was successfully held from May 19th to 22rd in Xiamen, China. The conference was hosted by Xiamen University and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and organized by the College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Xiamen University and the Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Spectrochemical Analysis & Instrumentation. More than 330 atomic spectrometry experts and scholars from 16 countries and regions, including United States of America, Germany, United Kingdom, Japan, Korea, India, etc. attended this conference.

The opening ceremony of the conference was chaired by the Conference Chairman Professor Wei Hang of Xiamen University. Professor Yunbao Jiang, dean of the College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Xiamen University, and Prof.Benli Huang, Honorary Chairman of 2015APWC, made the welcoming remarks. Professor Ramon Barnes, the founder of Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry, introduced previous Winter Conferences on Plasma Spectrochemistry to the attendees and made congratulations to Prof.Benli Huang on his 90th birthday. Prof. Gary Hieftje from Indiana University and Prof. Guibin Jiang from Chinese Academy of Eco-Environment Center delivered conference Plenary Lectures.

During the conference, more than 50 well-known scholars gave excellent lectures. Extensive academic and technical exchanges on research progress took place on a variety of domains, including plasma spectral/mass spectral analysis, analytical instrumentation, elemental speciation analysis, environmental analysis, food and drug analysis, laser-induced plasma spectrochemistry, applications of plasma spectrochemistry, etc. In the conference, many analytical instrument manufacturers, including Perkin Elmer, Agilent, Shimadzu, Thermo Fisher, Spectro, Nu Instrument, Analytik Jena and so on, exhibited their relevant instruments and technical application data.

In this conference, Prof.Zhifang Chai was awarded the ‘Life Achievement Award for Atomic Spectrometry in China’ for his outstanding contribution in atomic analysis and characterization. In order to encourage graduate students to attend the conference and share their latest research work, 10 best posters were selected and awarded. The First National Conference on Mass Spectrometry of Chinese Chemical Society Held in Beijing

The First National Conference on Mass Spectrometry of Chinese Chemical Societywas held on April25-27, 2014 in Beijing. This conference was organized by Mass Spectrometry Division of Chinese Chemical Society, and Department of Chemistry /Analysis Center of Tsinghua University. The symposium was initiated by Prof. Jin-Ming Lin from Tsinghua University and chaired by Prof. Hongyuan Chen from Nanjing University. Prof. Qiankun Zhuang from National Nature Science Foundation of China (NSFC) gave the opening speech before the plenary lectures. More than 400 conventioneers including scientists, experts and students of mass spectrometry from 79 academic institutions and instrument manufacturers attended the conference.

During this symposium, 15 plenary lecturers, 30 invited speakers and 30 contributed speakers presented their latest academic achievements in mass spectrometry related to environmental and food safety, pharmaceutical analysis, -omics, bio-analysis, and instrumentation developments. Eight excellent posters were selected for awards by a prize-jury group. The meeting has provided a great opportunity for academic communications in the hope of promoting the development of mass spectrometry in China.

The Chinese Chemical Society was found in 1932. It has 7 discipline committees, 23 divisions, 65,000 members and more than 60 group members. The Division of Mass Spectrometry was founded in 2013, chaired by Prof. Hongyuan Chen of Nanjing University. In commemoration of this new division and of its first conference, a special issue devoted to research in mass spectrometry in China was edited by Prof. Hongyuan Chen, Prof. Pengyuan Yang and Prof. Jin-Ming Lin and will be published in Science China Chemistry.

15th Beijing Conference and Exhibition on Instrumental Analysis (BCEIA 2013)

The 15th Beijing Conference and Exhibition on Instrumental Analysis (BCEIA 2013) was held on 23-26 October 2013 at Hotel Nikko New Century Beijing and its exhibition at Beijing Exhibition Center.

BCEIA was sponsored by the China Association for Instrumental Analysis (CAIA) and supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China. This has been a biennial international event in China since 1985 and it has the aim to promote academic exchanges among scientists of various countries and regions as well as trade cooperation between the Chinese and foreign partners in this field. It has been the largest and most influential international conference and exhibition on instrumental analysis ever held in China.

The theme of BCEIA 2013 was “Analytical Science Create Future“, which included a plenary session, separate sub-sessions of 7 fields and workshops of 5 fields. More than 600 of scientists from 16 different countries participated in the conference. The plenary session featured specially invited lectures by 13 internationally prominent scientists, including Prof. Holger Hintelmann (Trent University), Prof. R. Graham Cooks (Purdue University), Prof. Jonathan V. Sweedler (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign), Prof. Yoshinobu BABA (Nagoya University), Prof. Andrew Ewing (Chalmers University of Technology and University of Gothenburg), Prof. John P. Nolan (La Jolla Bioengineering Institute), Prof. Anne L. Plant (National Institute of Standards and Technology), Prof. Xianen Zhang (Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China), Prof. Rima Kaddurah-Daouk (Duke University Medical Center), Prof. Richard L. Mccreery (University of Alberta), Prof. Daniel T. Chiu (University of Washington), Prof. Lyndon Emsley (Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon) and Dr. Peter Becker (Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt). In the separate sub-sessions and workshops, 149 speakers were invited to present their research and more than 500 posters were displayed.

The optical spectroscopy session was organized by Prof. Jin-Ming Lin from Tsinghua University. The session was mainly devoted to recent developments on fluorescence analysis, atomic spectrum, chemiluminescence, biological imaging, microfluidic and new analytical instruments. There were 14 keynote speakers, 22 invited speakers, 4 oral presentations and 69 posters presented. The outstanding poster awards were conferred at the end of the session on 25 October. Prof. Jin-Ming Lin and Prof. Jonathan V. Sweedler gave the awards certifications for 7 winners.

This conference has provided an opportunity for the academic exchange as well as the exhibition of analytical instruments and will further promote the development of analytical chemistry in China.

The 11th Chinese Analytical Chemistry Annual Meeting Held in Qingdao

The 11th Chinese Analytical Chemistry Annual Meeting was held on October 26-29, 2012, at Qingdao International Convention Center. This is the most important professional meeting on Analytical Chemistry in China, which is held once every three years. The meeting was sponsored by the Chinese Chemical Society, the Chinese Spectroscopy Society and the Geological Society of China, and was organized by Qingdao University of Science & Technology and Linyi University.

The Chairman was Prof. Erkang Wang (Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, CAS), and the Vice Chairmen were Prof. Hongyuan Chen (Academician of CAS), Prof. Zhifang Chai (Academician of CAS), Prof. Ruqin Yu (Academician of CAS), Prof. Shouzhuo Yao (Academician of CAS), Prof. Jincai Zhao (Academician of CAS), Prof. Yukui Zhang (Academician of CAS), Prof. Guibin Jiang (Academician of CAS), Prof. Shaojun Dong (Academician of CAS), Prof. Guofang Pang (Academician of CAS). The Symposium Science Committee was composed of 108 professors. The Organizing Committee was chaired by Prof. Kui Jiao, and the Vice Chairmen were Prof. Qiankun Zhuang, Prof. Xiurong Yang, Prof. Hangting Chen, and Prof. Shusheng Zhang.

More than 1500 people from 200 units including the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the Chinese Academy of Sciences, various universities and companies attended the meeting. The meeting comprised 1148 papers and 232 poster presentations. There were 9 different sessions: Atomic Spectroscopy, Molecular Spectroscopy and Spectrum Analysis, Electroanalysis, Nanoscience-based Analysis, Biochemistry Analysis, Chromatography, New Analytical Instruments, Youth Forum and National Fund Forum. The meeting accommodated 13 plenary lectures, 219 invited lectures and 104 oral presentations. This conference has provided an opportunity for the academic exchange, and will promote the development of Analytical Chemistry in China.

The Second China-US Analytical Chemistry Workshop Held in Beijing

The 2nd China-US Analytical Chemistry Workshop was held on September 14-15th, at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. The workshop is a China-US bilateral meeting of analytical chemists, supported by the Chinese National Nature Science Foundation and the American Chemical Society. It focuses on the discussion of the latest trends in analytical chemistry. The first US-China Analytical Chemistry meeting was held at Purdue University in West Lafyette in the summer of 2010, organized by Prof. R.G. Cooks and Zheng Ouyang. Over 50 prominent analytical chemists from both countries attended the workshop.

The 2nd China-US Analytical Chemistry Workshop was organized by Prof. Xinrong Zhang and Prof. Jinming Lin in Analysis Center of Tsinghua University, and was hosted by Department of Analytical Chemistry, National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). About 100 people from 14 units of US and 42 units of China attended the workshop. Prof. Qiankun Zhuang (NSFC), Prof. Kelsey Cook (US NSF), Prof. Yukui Zhang (Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics), Prof. Jonathon Sweedler (University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign), Prof. Paul Bohn (Notre Dame University), Prof. R. Graham Cooks (Purdue University, USA.), Prof. Isiah Warner (Louisiana State University), Prof. Chunhai Fan (Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics, CAS), Prof. Rena Robinson (Pittsburgh University), Prof. Yanyi Huang (Peking University), Prof. Lane Baker (Indiana University), Prof. Xingyu Jiang (National Center for Nanoscience and Technology), Prof. Steve Jacobson (Indiana University), Prof. Zongxiu Nie (Institute of Chemistry, CAS) and Prof. Lihua Zhang (Dalian Institue of Chemical Physics, CAS) gave speeches at the workshop. In addition, a discussion on research trends in analytical chemistry, infrastructure and instrumentation, the status of analytical post-graduate education, and how the community can help to raise the profile of publications in analytical science was carried out.

The two-day conference has been committed to bring leading scientists and young scientists together to discuss their current research and built informal networks with their peers that may lead to lifetime collaboration and scientific achievement. Furthermore, it has sought to forge better ties between analytical chemists working in the two countries, and to promote the well-being of the discipline of Analytical Chemistry in the future.

The Second Atomic Spectroscopy Symposium of China Held in Shenyang

The Second Atomic Spectroscopy Symposium of China was held on Aug, 19-21, at Shenyang, Liaoning, China. It was organized by Northeastern University, which was sponsored by The Atomic Spectroscopy Professional Committee of China Instrument and Control Society. More than 100 people from 44 units including National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), various universities and companies attended the symposium.

The symposium was organized by Prof. Jianhua Wang from Research Center for Analytical Sciences, Northeastern University. The Chairman was Prof. Guibin Jiang (Academician of CAS, Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences), and the Vice Chairmen were Prof. Qiankun Zhuang, Prof. Xinrong Zhang, Prof. Pengyuan Yang, Prof. Xiuping Yan, Prof. Bin Hu, Prof. Xiandeng Hou, Prof. Jianhua Wang and Prof. Qiuquan Wang. Prof. Qiuquan Wang chaired the opening ceremony, and Prof. Liang Zuo (Vice President of Northeastern University) gave an opening speech. In addition, Prof. Qiankun Zhuang (The Director of Analytical Chemistry, NSFC) and Prof. Pengyuan Yang (Fudan Univeristy) gave speeches at the opening ceremony.

There were 3 plenary lectures imparted by Prof. Benli Huang (Academician of CAS, Xiamen University), Prof. Guibin Jiang (Academician of CAS) and Prof. Qiankun Zhuang. The symposium included 8 sessions, 23 invited lectures, 17 oral presentations and 35 poster presentations. This is an important professional symposium on atomic spectroscopy in China, which provided an opportunity for the academic exchange and will promote the development of atomic spectroscopy in China.

The 28th Chinese Chemical Society (CCS) Congress Held in Chengdu

The 28th CCS Congress was held on April 13-16, 2012, at Sichuan University, Chengdu, Sichuan, China. During the congress, a celebration for the 80th anniversary of the Chinese Chemical Society (CCS, 1932-2012) was organized. This is the most important professional congress in China, focused on basic research and applications of Chemistry. The congress included 19 individual sessions and 9 specific forums. More than 4000 people, including scientists, researchers, lab technicians, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from different universities, institutes, and different countries attended the congress. There were 1336 presentations, including 6 plenary lectures, 557 invited lectures, 773 oral presentations, and 2625 poster presentations.

The Analytical Chemistry Session was organized by Prof. Xiandeng Hou and Prof. Yi Lv from College of Chemistry, Sichuan University. The chairman of the session was Prof. Hongyuan Chen (Academician of CAS, Najing University), and the vice chairman was Prof. Xiurong Yang in Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, CAS. It was mainly devoted to recent developments in atomic spectroscopy, molecular spectroscopy, electroanalysis, chromatography, nanoscience-based analysis, and new analytical instruments. More than 300 people attended the session. It consisted of 130 presentations, including 38 invited lectures and 92 oral presentations, as well as 186 posters. This congress has provided an opportunity for the academic exchange, and will further promote the development of chemistry in China.

Beijing Mass Spectrometry Annual Meeting—The Fifth Atomic Spectroscopy Workshop of China Held in Beijing

The Beijing Mass Spectrometry Annual Meeting 2011 was organized by Beijing Physical & Chemistry Testing Technology Society and Beijing Society for Mass Spectrometry on March 30, 2012. During the meeting, the Fifth Atomic Spectroscopy Workshop of China was held. This is the fist professional workshop in China focused on basic research and applications of atomic spectroscopy, which was initiated by Zhi Xing in Tsinghua University Analysis Center. The workshop aims at providing an opportunity for the academic exchange, creating a close cooperation in a relaxing way, in the hope of promoting the development of analytical chemistry. Since 2010, the workshop has been held five times. The conventioneers, including scientists, researchers, and lab technicians of atomic spectrometry, come mainly from Analysis Center of Tsinghua University, Institute of High Energy Physics Chinese Academy of Science, Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry Chinese Academy of Science, National Institute of Metrology P.R. China, General Research Institute for Nonferrous Metals, National Research Center for Geoanalysis, CNNC Beijing Research Institute of Uranium Geology and some instrument manufacturers of China.

The latest research progress, experience on instrument usage, instrumental development, and applications in pharmaceutical, food, environmental and petrochemical analysis, among other fields, have been discussed in the workshop. In addition, relationships have been built on the sharing of standardized samples and special instruments, as well as on interlaboratory comparisons. This workshop is a key contributor for the development of atomic spectrometry analysis in China.
