Sensors don’t always require expensive equipment or complex attachment chemistries, and when possible a visual color change is enough. In this HOT article, Maotian Xu and colleagues from Shangqiu Normal University, China, have detected lysine effectively and cheaply using the colorimetric properties of gold nanoparticles during aggregation. The lysine content in food is important for growth and development, and using this assay it was detected in three different commercial food sources.
