UKSG 2013 – We hope you enjoyed the show!

It was great to see so many Librarians and Information Specialists in Bournemouth.

Unfortunately only one of you can take home the Kindle Fire, but I hope all booth visitors enjoyed finding out more about Gold for Gold and what we are doing about Open Access, as well as seeing the UK launch of The Merck Index* Online.

Material matters at 2013 MRS Spring Meeting

Thanks to everyone that stopped by our booth last week at the 2013 MRS Spring Meeting & Exhibit in San Francisco.

Editors Liz Dunn and Sam Keltie were on hand to answer questions and tell people about our top journals and books, including Biomaterials Science, Energy & Environmental Science and Journals of Materials Chemistry A, B and C.

Pittcon 2013 – were you a winner?

Delegates met with staff, browsed our books and journals and enjoyed a free coffee

Scientists from around the globe descended on Philadelphia last week for Pittcon 2013 – and we were there too!

We had a range of top titles on display, including Analyst, Analytical Methods, Journal of Analytical Atomic Spectrometry (JAAS) and the flagship general chemistry journal, Chemical Science.

Apps with real impact

Some apps have real impact, we’ve just sponsored two such apps.

Green Solvents and Lab Solvents are innovative apps for the iOS and Android platforms that list solvents and their scores versus various environmentally relevant properties. They are based on published data that had not been widely disseminated in conveniently available media. The apps are freely available and were developed by Dr. Alex M. Clark at Molecular Materials Informatics (MMI, Montreal, Canada) after an initial idea from Dr. Sean Ekins at Collaborations in Chemistry (CIC, Fuquay Varina, USA).

“These apps are first class examples of how green chemistry data can be delivered to a mobile device and complement other apps such as ChemSpider Mobile, which we have developed with Alex.” said Antony J. Williams, VP Strategic Development for the RSC. “We are honoured to support such efforts that raise awareness of green chemistry and educate the public and serve a need for scientists in the lab”.

“It is really wonderful validation of these apps that an organisation such as the RSC would sponsor Green Solvents and Lab Solvents and this will help to further raise their visibility to scientists globally” said Alex Clark, owner of Molecular Materials Informatics.

RSC launches Materials Horizons journal

Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Publishing is delighted to announce Materials Horizons, a new peer-reviewed journal for first reports of exceptional significance across the breadth of materials research.

Announcing the launch, James Milne, Executive Director of RSC Publishing, said: “Materials science is an expansive and rapidly evolving field of real relevance to the chemical sciences. Only last week, the UK Science Minister, David Willetts, announced £73 million of investment for new facilities and equipment to support research in advanced materials in the UK.

“We are delighted to support the breadth of the global materials research community with this new journal. Materials Horizons will be a world class journal characterised by the quality, ease and speed of publication, and innovative technology for which RSC Publishing is renowned. As a not-for-profit publisher, this new addition to our portfolio will also go towards facilitating the RSC’s aim to advance the chemical sciences for the benefit of society.”

The journal will open for submissions in April 2013 and the first issue will be published in late 2013.

Materials Horizons will be:

High impact – only publishing the most novel and exciting advances
A leader – the Editorial Board, led by Seth Marder (Georgia Institute of Technology, USA), will drive scientific development, with Scientific Editors helping to maintain scientific standards
Interdisciplinary – showcasing the best research at the cutting-edge interface of materials science with chemistry, physics, biology and engineering
Internationally visible – free access to all content published during 2014 and 2015, guaranteeing maximum exposure
Rapid – speedy reviewing and publication in as little as a day after acceptance with our Accepted Manuscript option

Seth Marder, Professor of Chemistry and Materials Science and Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, USA, has been appointed Editorial Board Chair of the new journal. “It is a very exciting opportunity for me to work with the team at the RSC to help launch Materials Horizons, a new kind of society journal geared to rapid publication of truly top calibre, first reports of materials research broadly defined,” he says. “Importantly, while published by a chemical society, the journal will seek to serve the broader materials community, by welcoming papers that cover the gamut of materials research, providing a forum for editorials on the status and future of materials research, and content geared specifically to educating and engaging younger researchers in the field. With this, we hope to make Materials Horizons an indispensable resource for all researchers in the materials community.”
