Anyone for Open Access?

We have a great initiative, and we want to extend it to the rest of the world.

Launched in the Summer, our Gold for Gold pilot, enabling RSC Gold subscribers in the UK to publish RSC papers free-of-charge via Gold Open Access (OA), was a direct reaction to researchers being asked to publish OA, but without necessarily having the funding to do so.

Following the pilot’s popularity (at least 5 high-profile institutions have already taken advantage of Gold for Gold) we don’t want others to miss out. So, from now on, all RSC Gold subscribing institutions will be rewarded with voucher codes to publish OA articles at no cost.

This is an excellent opportunity for authors to increase the visibility of your quality research.

For more information, go to our Gold for Gold website. And, to find out exactly how the process will work, take a look at our FAQs.

RSC Endorses KBART

Improving metadata assists discoverability.

As part of our commitment to support librarians, the Royal Society of Chemistry is delighted to endorse Phase I recommendations of the KBART (Knowledge Bases And Related Tools) Working Group, a joint NISO/UKSG initiative that is exploring data problems within the OpenURL supply chain.

KBART’s Phase I Recommended Practice, published in January 2010, contains practical recommendations for the timely exchange of accurate metadata between content providers and knowledge base developers.

More information is available via the NISO and UKSG Press Release. Our endorsement is thanks to the hard work of Juliet Palmer, Customer Service Executive – Technical Support, in producing and updating the KBART file which is available on the RSC’s Librarians’ Portal.

RSC Publishing Price List 2013

RSC Price List 2013The Royal Society of Chemistry would like to announce its 2013 Price List for journals, databases, magazines, eBooks and various collections.

Growth in content, higher impact factors, increased international influence and global visibility are at the cornerstone of everything we do.

And here’s just some of the proof. In the past year the number of articles in RSC journals has risen by 53% to more than 20,000, whilst 41% of our journals have achieved an Impact Factor of *5 and above (that’s more than Elsevier, Wiley and the ACS). We can boast authors from more than 90 countries worldwide, and our content has been downloaded by virtually every country on the planet.

Please see below for a summary of all the key changes for 2013, reflected in the new Price List.

New for 2013

  • All 2013 subscription renewals will be managed in-house by the RSC (this was previously managed by PCS)
  • There will be two new journals for 2013, Biomaterials Science and Toxicology Research – both available for free to all existing subscribers or registered users
  • There will be a significant increase in content for the following journals: CrystEngComm (48 issues for 2013, previously 24); Faraday Discussions (8 issues for 2013, previously 6); Polymer Chemistry (24 issues for 2013, previously 12); RSC Advances (48 issues for 2013, previously 24)
  • Our collections continue to represent great savings, and RSC Gold now includes Catalysis Science & Technology and RSC Advances. We are discontinuing the Package K Collection
  • We are offering more flexibility on our eBooks, with annual collections now available for all years from 2008-2013. We are discontinuing the Tutorial Chemistry Texts and Paperback Subject Collection
  • The Journal of Materials Chemistry brand will continue in the form of three journals, but will still be available as a full collection. Each journal will focus on an area of materials chemistry, divided by the nature of the intended applications of the materials studied: energy and sustainability; biology and medicine; and optical and electronic devices.
  • In response to feedback from the journal’s community, the Journal of Environmental Monitoring is changing its name to Environmental Science: Processes & Impacts (ESPI) to better reflect the content and the interests of the journal’s readers
  • All databases from 2013 will be online only (this applies to individual subscriptions and collections) and we are discontinuing the Chromatography Abstracts database

If you would like to discuss your own subscription, creating a bespoke package or upgrading to RSC Gold, please contact us.

*Impact Factor data based on 2011 Journal Citation Reports (Thomson Reuters, June 2012)

Toxicology Research announced

The following news item about new journal Toxicology Research has just been released:Tox Res cover

Academic and industrial researchers in the field of toxicology will have a new option for the publication of their research in 2012, with the launch of Toxicology Research. The journal will be published in partnership with the British Toxicology Society and the Chinese Society of Toxicology.

Announcing the launch, James Milne, acting Managing Director of Publishing at the RSC, said:  “We are delighted to support the toxicology research community with this new journal, published in partnership with both the BTS and CST.  By providing authors with exceptional service through the submission and publication process, and providing free access to readers for the first two volumes, we anticipate Toxicology Research will quickly become preeminent in the field.

“The RSC prides itself in publishing journals of exceptional quality, relevance and timeliness, and Toxicology Research, with the editorial team involved, will certainly be in a good position to achieve this for the toxicology community”.

Toxicology Research will be a multidisciplinary journal covering both the fundamental and applied aspects of toxicology, including drug toxicity, food toxicity and their mechanisms, responses and risk/safety evaluation.  The journal opens for submissions on 1st December, and the first issue will be published at the end of May 2012.

Professor Nigel J Gooderham, Editor-in-Chief, comments “It is a privilege and honour to be invited to work with the Royal Society of Chemistry on the launch of this new publishing venture.  Current research in toxicology attempts to understand and explain biological response to noxious agents and draws upon the physical, biological and medical sciences.  Therefore the scope of Toxicology Research will be inclusive rather than specialist with the emphasis on publishing the highest quality toxicological science, irrespective of discipline.”

Authors submitting to Toxicology Research will benefit from rapid peer review and publication, with no page charges.  Authors have the option of publishing their research as an Accepted Manuscript*, and Open Access publication is also available as an option through RSC Open Science. Published research will have very high visibility: from launch until December 2013, all content will be freely available online for all readers via the website. Additionally, chemical structures and data contained in the journal will be integrated with ChemSpider, the RSC’s free chemical structure database. Authors with research that they would like to be considered for the first issues of Toxicology Research can submit online at www.rsc.org/toxicology.

For further details contact:

Richard Kelly, Managing Editor, email: toxres-rsc@rsc.org

*An Accepted Manuscript is an unedited and unformatted version of an article that is published shortly after acceptance. It is available as a downloadable pdf file. It is then replaced by the fully edited and formatted Advance Article.
