Publishing Price List 2014

Price List ThumbnailWe all want great content, and we all want value for money.

At the Royal Society of Chemistry we are proud to be a not-for-profit organisation, dedicated to advancing excellence in the chemical sciences. Any surplus is reinvested back into this community, including sustaining and developing our publishing programme. Our Publishing Price List 2014 reflects this commitment.

Key highlights and changes for 2014:

  • Our new partnership with the Chinese Chemical Society (CCS), delivering the first two titles in the new Frontiers journals series: Inorganic Chemistry Frontiers (with the College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering, Peking University – PKU), and Organic Chemistry Frontiers (with the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry – SIOC)
  • Two further new journals: Materials Horizons and Environmental Science: Nano – both available for free to all existing subscribers or registered users until the end of 2015
  • Our acquisition and development of The Merck Index* Online (15th edition), with both perpetual and subscription models available for multiple-users – we are the exclusive provider of what is considered the “bible” of chemistry
  • An increase in content for Faraday Discussions (9 issues for 2014, previously 8 issues)
  • Continued great savings on collections. RSC Gold equates to a 50% discount on the individual prices of products, and now includes Toxicology Research. Whilst our Core Chemistry and General Chemistry packages now include RSC Advances. We are discontinuing Package A and Package A+
  • The new Materials Science Collection. This will include: Journal of Materials Chemistry A, B and C, Energy and Environmental Sciences, Nanoscale, Soft Matter, Polymer Chemistry, Cryst Eng Comm, Biomaterials Science (free in 2014) and Materials Horizons (free in 2014)
  • Our annual eBook collections, now available for all years from 2008-2014
  • And, in response to customer needs, we are discontinuing Annual Reports on the Progress of Chemistry to reflect a change in the needs of the chemical sciences community. Existing subscribers will not lose access to previous years’ reports

If you would like to discuss your own subscription, creating a bespoke package or upgrading to RSC Gold, please contact us.

UKSG 2013 – We hope you enjoyed the show!

It was great to see so many Librarians and Information Specialists in Bournemouth.

Unfortunately only one of you can take home the Kindle Fire, but I hope all booth visitors enjoyed finding out more about Gold for Gold and what we are doing about Open Access, as well as seeing the UK  launch of The Merck Index* Online.

Back to the business of the Kindle Fire, I am delighted to announce that the winner of our Buzzwire Competition (involving 45 steady-handed librarians), in a staggering time of 17 Seconds, was Claire Gravely, Information Resources Advisor, University of Surrey.

Top 5 Times:

1 Claire Gravely, University of Surrey, UK 17 Secs
2 Monica Crump, NUL Galway, Ireland          28 Secs
3= Jessica Eustace-Cook, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland  29 Secs
3= Marie Barwick, University of Warwick, UK  29 Secs
5 Dag-Even Torsoe, BI Handelshoyskolen, Norway   32 Secs

Look out for an equally challenging competition in Harrogate next year – perhaps involving a different skill!

If you have any queries about our products, and/or did not have time to visit us, please e-mail Max Espley.

Anyone for Open Access?

We have a great initiative, and we want to extend it to the rest of the world.

Launched in the Summer, our Gold for Gold pilot, enabling RSC Gold subscribers in the UK to publish RSC papers free-of-charge via Gold Open Access (OA), was a direct reaction to researchers being asked to publish OA, but without necessarily having the funding to do so.

Following the pilot’s popularity (at least 5 high-profile institutions have already taken advantage of Gold for Gold) we don’t want others to miss out. So, from now on, all RSC Gold subscribing institutions will be rewarded with voucher codes to publish OA articles at no cost.

This is an excellent opportunity for authors to increase the visibility of your quality research.

For more information, go to our Gold for Gold website. And, to find out exactly how the process will work, take a look at our FAQs.

RSC Endorses KBART

Improving metadata assists discoverability.

As part of our commitment to support librarians, the Royal Society of Chemistry is delighted to endorse Phase I recommendations of the KBART (Knowledge Bases And Related Tools) Working Group, a joint NISO/UKSG initiative that is exploring data problems within the OpenURL supply chain.

KBART’s Phase I Recommended Practice, published in January 2010, contains practical recommendations for the timely exchange of accurate metadata between content providers and knowledge base developers.

More information is available via the NISO and UKSG Press Release. Our endorsement is thanks to the hard work of Juliet Palmer, Customer Service Executive – Technical Support, in producing and updating the KBART file which is available on the RSC’s Librarians’ Portal.

Gold for Gold – First Open Access credit used by University of Hull

It’s nice to be first.Gold Image

Recently we announced Gold for Gold, an innovative initiative rewarding UK RSC Gold customers with credits to publish a select number of papers in RSC journals via Open Science, the RSC’s Gold Open Access option. This ensures academics at RSC Gold subscribing institutions can further increase the visibility of their quality research.

We are now delighted to announce another first. This time for the University of Hull, who will be the opening beneficiary from this project.

CXCR4 chemokine receptor antagonists: nickel(II) complexes of configurationally restricted macrocycles (Steve Archibald et al, Dalton Transactions 2012 Vol:41, Issue 31) is the first article to be published as part of Gold for Gold and is available to all online.

More information on Gold for Gold is available on our website. If you have any further questions on the procedure, or are an interested customer from outside the UK , please contact goldforgold@rsc.org.

RSC Publishing Price List 2013

RSC Price List 2013The Royal Society of Chemistry would like to announce its 2013 Price List for journals, databases, magazines, eBooks and various collections.

Growth in content, higher impact factors, increased international influence and global visibility are at the cornerstone of everything we do.

And here’s just some of the proof. In the past year the number of articles in RSC journals has risen by 53% to more than 20,000, whilst 41% of our journals have achieved an Impact Factor of *5 and above (that’s more than Elsevier, Wiley and the ACS). We can boast authors from more than 90 countries worldwide, and our content has been downloaded by virtually every country on the planet.

Please see below for a summary of all the key changes for 2013, reflected in the new Price List.

New for 2013

  • All 2013 subscription renewals will be managed in-house by the RSC (this was previously managed by PCS)
  • There will be two new journals for 2013, Biomaterials Science and Toxicology Research – both available for free to all existing subscribers or registered users
  • There will be a significant increase in content for the following journals: CrystEngComm (48 issues for 2013, previously 24); Faraday Discussions (8 issues for 2013, previously 6); Polymer Chemistry (24 issues for 2013, previously 12); RSC Advances (48 issues for 2013, previously 24)
  • Our collections continue to represent great savings, and RSC Gold now includes Catalysis Science & Technology and RSC Advances. We are discontinuing the Package K Collection
  • We are offering more flexibility on our eBooks, with annual collections now available for all years from 2008-2013. We are discontinuing the Tutorial Chemistry Texts and Paperback Subject Collection
  • The Journal of Materials Chemistry brand will continue in the form of three journals, but will still be available as a full collection. Each journal will focus on an area of materials chemistry, divided by the nature of the intended applications of the materials studied: energy and sustainability; biology and medicine; and optical and electronic devices.
  • In response to feedback from the journal’s community, the Journal of Environmental Monitoring is changing its name to Environmental Science: Processes & Impacts (ESPI) to better reflect the content and the interests of the journal’s readers
  • All databases from 2013 will be online only (this applies to individual subscriptions and collections) and we are discontinuing the Chromatography Abstracts database

If you would like to discuss your own subscription, creating a bespoke package or upgrading to RSC Gold, please contact us.

*Impact Factor data based on 2011 Journal Citation Reports (Thomson Reuters, June 2012)
