2023 Analyst and JAAS Emerging Investigator Lectureships Nominations are Open

We are pleased to announce that nominations are now open for the 2023 Emerging Investigator Lectureships for Analyst and JAAS (Journal of Analytical Atomic Spectroscopy). Read below for more information:

2023 Analyst Emerging Investigator Lectureship

The Analyst Emerging Investigator Lectureship is awared annually and recognizes early career researchers, typically within 10 years of earning their PhD, who have made a significant contribution to analytical chemistry in their independent academic career.

The winner will receive the opportunity to present a lecture at a leading international meeting, with a contribution of up to £2,000 to cover associated travel and accommodation costs.

The Lectureship will be selected by the Analyst Editoral Board from a shortlist of nominees. Candidates must have completed their PhD, have published in Analyst in the past 3 years, actively be working in a research area within the scope of Analyst, and be at an early stage of their independent career.

2023 JAAS Emerging Investigator Lectureship

The JAAS Emerging Investigator Lectureship is awared annually and recognizes early career researchers, typically within 10 years of earning their PhD, who have made a significant contribution to the area of atomic spectroscopy in their independent academic career.

The winner will receive the opportunity to present a lecture at a leading international meeting, with a contribution of up to £2,000 to cover associated travel and accommodation costs. They will also receive free RSC membership for one year.

The Lectureship will be selected by the JAAS Editoral Board from a shortlist of nominees. Candidates must have completed their PhD, have previously published in JAAS, actively be working in a research area within the scope of JAAS, and be at an early stage of their independent career.

Congratulations to the winners of the 2023 Certificates of Undergraduate Excellence!

We are proud to announce the winners of this year’s Certificates of Undergraduate Excellence, the Royal Society of Chemistry’ recognition program for university students in North America. This is the first group of award winners after the award was relaunched in 2022 to focus on the achievements of undergraduate students in the chemical sciences. The recipients were selected by their departments for their exceptional dedication, performance, and engagement in coursework and research.

77 students received the Certificate of Undergraduate Excellence this year from 53 institutions across North America, and each winner will receive (in addition to the certificate) their department’s choice of:

RSC Affiliate membership
A printed edition of the Merck Index
An invitation to join a publishing training session provided by RSC journal editorial teams

Ten Years of Journal of Materials Chemistry A, B, and C !

When the Journal of Materials Chemistry became three separate titles in 2013, it represented a fantastic opportunity to grow the scope of the journal and provide dedicated homes for for all kinds of ground-breaking and impactful research.

In the ten years since then, the Journal of Materials Chemistry A, B, and C have published over 45,000 articles across the breadth of materials science, serving as high impact homes for research in the areas of energy and sustainability, biology and medicine, and optical, magnetic and electronic devices.

To celebrate the tenth anniversary, the JMCs will be publishing special anniversary issues, as well as many other celebrations on the journals’ Twitter and Facebook pages. To kick off the festivities, read the Editors-in-Chief’s introductory Editorial published in journals’ first issues of 2023.

Congratulations again to the past ten years of the Journal of Materials Chemistry A, B, and C, and we look forward to many more fantastic years in the future!

Celebrating WesTEC 2022 with Dow Canada

The Royal Society of Chemistry was proud to again support and celebrate the 31^st Western Canada Operations Technical Excellence Conference (WesTEC), hosted by Dow Chemical, which is also marking its 125^th anniversary.

This year’s theme of “Mapping the Path2Zero,” highlights the essential role of companies in addressing climate change by moving towards a goal of net zero emissions. Dow has committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050, and has already unveiled their plans to build a first of its kind net zero carbon integrated ethylene cracker and derivatives site in Fort Saskatchewan. As in previous years, the 2022 WesTEC was an opportunity to highlight the outstanding work in this area being done at Dow Canada, and the Royal Society of Chemistry was glad to be a part of that recognition.

The Royal Society of Chemistry was thrilled to sponsor two awards at the 2022 WesTEC: Best Presentation: Nail Hagar, as well as Best Exhibit: Pabbi Grover and Jordan Gabert. Congratulations to all three winners!

Additionally, the Royal Society of Chemistry would like to congratulate Professor Emeritus Dr. Milton Lee of Brigham Young University, and previous member of Analytical Method‘s Editorial Board, for receiving the Distinguished External Leader in Science and Technology. Dr. Lee is pictured below with Dr. Jim Luong, R&D Fellow Dow Canada and current Analytical Methods Advisory Board member. Dr. Lee was honored at the 2022 WestTEC, where he delivered an award address to attendees sharing his wisdom gained throughout his distinguished career.

2022 Energy & Environmental Science Lectureship Nominations Open

Nominations for the 2022 Energy & Environmental Science Lectureship are now open!

The Lectureship is to recognize and support researchers in the early stage of their independent career working in an energy research topic within the scope of Energy & Environmental Science, and provide a platform to showcase their research to a wider scientific community. The EES Lectureship is awarded through a nominations process, with nominations of candidates open to the community.

The winner of the EES Lectureship will receive a £1,000 honorarium and will be given the opportunity to attend and present their research at a leading international conference, as well as contribute a Review-type article to Energy & Environmental Science.

The criteria for the Lectureship are:

The candidate’s research area must be within the scope of Energy & Environmental Science
Shortlisted candidates must have published in Energy & Environmental Science in the past 3 years
Candidates should be at an early stage of their independent career (generally within 10 years of attaining their doctorate or equivalent degree, but appropriate consideration will be given to those who have taken a career break, for example for childcare leave, or followed an alternative study path).

Materials Science Emerging Investigators

The Journals of Materials Chemistry A, B, and C recently released their 2022 Emerging Investigators collections, highlighting the best work from materials chemists in the early stages of their independent career. These collections cover the research areas of energy and sustainability (JMC-A), biology and medicine (JMC-B), and optical, magnetic, and electronic devices (JMC-C).

The contributing investigators were selected by experts in their fields and were chosen based on the potential of their work to influence the future directions of materials chemistry throughout their forthcoming careers.

Peer Review Week 2022

This week (September 19-23, 2022) is Peer Review Week, an annual event celebrating and discussing the role of peer review in scholarly communication. This year’s theme is “Research Integrity: Creating and supporting trust in research,” and the posts, webinars, and resources shared this week will cover this vitally important aspect of peer review.
