S-Adenosylmethionine (SAM) is an enzyme cofactor involved in a wide range of enzyme-catalysed reactions. Although mainly known as a methyl donor (Nature’s methyl iodide), all parts of the molecule such as the aminocarboxylpropyl chain and nucleoside moiety are used in combination with different chemical strategies (e.g. ionic and radical reactions). This makes the diversity of accessible products, as well as different types of enzymes impressive. In addition, more and more examples are emerging where SAM is being used as a building block for natural products or other small molecules such as signalling molecules, in this rapidly developing field.
