Hot article: N-doped titanium dioxide for Li-ion batteries

In their NJC paper, George Hasegawa and co-workers (Kyoto University, Japan) demonstrate facile synthesis of hierarchically porous N-doped TiO2 and applications to the anode of Li-ion batteries.

The precursor titanium-based hybrid gels were prepared by crosslinking titanium alkoxide with ethylenediamine in a non-hydrolytic sol-gel route which leads to TiO2 homogeneously doped with a high amount of nitrogen. The combination of N-doping into TiO2 and hierarchically porous structure effectively improves electrode performance; the resultant N-doped anatase showed good discharge capacities higher than the capacity of conventional anatase electrodes.

Fluorescent carbon dots from office waste printer paper

Professor Boxue Feng and his co-workers from Lanzhou University in China present a creative idea for the recycling of waste paper.

In their NJC Letter, they report a simple synthesis of water-soluble, fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) from waste paper as the carbon source via hydrothermal process at 180°C. They showed that the as-prepared CDs exhibit strong luminescence properties, good photostability, high photoluminescence quantum yield and fairly low toxicity. The green method described in this study indicates the potential applications of such prepared CDs in the field of bio-imaging.

Hot article: Glutathione detection using gold nanoparticle assembly

In this NJC paper, Peng Zhang and co-workers (University of Cincinnati, US) have reported the development of a highly sensitive and selective colorimetric detection method for glutathione (GSH) over cysteine (Cys) or homocysteine (Hcy) using gold nanoparticles (AuNPs).

The detection scheme is based on the quasi-stable state of AuNPs in the presence of sodium nitrate and GSH. The significant differences in interparticle forces and the assembly process of AuNPs enable the discrimination of GSH over Cys and Hcy. The presence of GSH can be detected by the naked eye and its concentration determined by UV/Vis spectrometry.

Antifungal activity of phosphonium ionic liquids

Due to their toxic nature the ionic liquids became an interesting subject of development for new applications.

In this NJC paper quaternary phosphonium ionic liquids are discussed in light of their potential use as an antifungal compounds. The authors Diego O. Hartmann and Cristina Silva Pereira (University  of Lisbon, Portugal) aimed this paper at investigating toxicity of several alkylphosphonium chlrorides versus a fungus, Aspergillus nidulans at a molecular level. They describe the use of qRT-PCR to analyse the expression of Aspergillus nidulans genes after exposure to alkyltributylphosphonium chlorides. The results indicate cell wall damage as the common mechanism of toxicity amongst these ionic liquids, while plasma membrane permeabilisation is dependent on the alkyl substituent length. The work provides an important basic insight to apply phosphonium type ionic liquids as an antifungal medicine.

Hot article: Green Giant

Heterocyclic N-oxides are ubiquitous protecting groups, auxiliary agents, oxidants, catalysts, surrogates for heterocyclic boronic acids or ligands in metal complexes. In addition, pyridine N-oxide derivatives have been recently reported to represent a new class of anti-HIV compounds. In this NJC letter, Wei Zhao and Chunxia Yang (Nanyang Normal University, China) report an effective and green procedure for pyridine oxidation using the large Δ-Na8HPW9O34 polyoxometalate as catalyst. In this system, reactions were carried out in water at room temperature with hydrogen peroxide as oxidant. The catalyst could be recovered and reused several times without obvious loss of activity.

Photocurrent response of strontium titanate films decorated with carbon quantum dots

In this NJC Hot paper Chinese researchers (Soochow University and Jiangsu University) describe a facile route for the fabrication of porous and solid SrTiO3 films by a template-free hydrothermal method using TiO2 NTs precursor and loading CQDs on the SrTiO3 surface by electrodeposition. As a result, the CQDs–SrTiO3 is responsive under near NIR irradiation owing to the energy upconversion ability of the CQDs. Based on the their results, a possible electron–hole transfer mechanism was also assumed.

Hot article: Highway to Gel

In this NJC letter, Christine Gérardin-Charbonnier and co-workers (Université de Lorraine, Vandoeuvre-Les-Nancy, France) report a supramolecular hydrogel resulting from the mixture of a cationic pseudopeptide (beta-AlaHisC8) and lauric acid in water at pH 8.5. The subsequent thermo-responsive aggregate displays a lamellar structure, which is stabilized by strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions.

This hydrogel could be a promising candidate for original biocompatible formulations in cosmetics or pharmaceuticals.
