New Journal of Chemistry welcomes new Associate Editors Yutaka Amao and Venkata Krishnan

We are delighted to welcome our new Associate Editors Professor Yutaka Amao and Professor Venkata Krishnan to the New Journal of Chemistry Editorial Board!

Professor Yutaka Amao

Professor Yutaka Amao received his doctorate in Engineering in 1997 from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan. He worked as a researcher at the Kanagawa Academy of Science and Technology from 1997 to 1998, as a researcher at the National Aerospace Laboratory from 1998 to 2001, and as an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Chemistry of Oita University from 2013 to 2021.

He also worked as a Precursory Research for Embryonic Science and Technology (PRESTO) researcher at the Japan Science and Technology Agency from 2011 to 2016. From 2013 to 2020, he was a Full Professor at the National Institutes of Natural Sciences, Osaka Metropolitan University (formerly Osaka City University). During this time, he has served as Vice Director of the Research Centre for Artificial Photosynthesis from 2013-2015, and Director since 2015. In 2020, he was appointed Full Professor at the Research Centre for Artificial Photosynthesis, Osaka Metropolitan University.

He received the Catalysis Research Encouragement Award from the Catalysis Society of Japan in 2008 and was appointed as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2018. His current research interests include photocatalyst, molecular catalyst, biocatalyst, and the development of carbon dioxide conversion to organic molecules with hybrid catalysis system. Professor Amao has published his work with the RSC throughout his career including in NJC, Analyst and Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics.

Professor Venkata Krishnan

Venkata Krishnan earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 2006 from University of Stuttgart, Germany after completing his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India.

Subsequently, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, U.S.A. from 2006 to 2010 and then as a research associate at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), Tsukuba, Japan from 2010 to 2012. Later, he joined as a faculty member at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi in April 2012 to start his independent academic career and is currently a full professor in its School of Chemical Sciences.

Venkata’s research group is mainly working in the field of Green Chemistry and Heterogeneous Catalysis for Energy and Environment Applications. He has published more than 170 articles in well-reputed scientific journals and is also a reviewer for various international journals. He has been bestowed with several awards, including DST INSPIRE faculty award, the IIT Mandi Foundation Day award for excellence in teaching, MANA research fellowship, DoE postdoctoral fellowship, the DFG doctoral fellowship, DAAD visiting scholar fellowship, etc. In addition to publishing with NJC, Professor Krishnan is a frequent publisher in other RSC journals such as Materials Chemistry Frontiers, Dalton Transactions, Green Chemistry and Chemical Communications. Apart from academics, he likes reading books and is interested in linguistics.

Welcome to Professor Karine Philippot Our new Associate Editor

We are delighted to introduce the newest member of the NJC Editorial Board: Professor Karine Philippot!

NJC Associate Editor Karine Philippot Royal Society of Chemistry

Karine is the research director at CNRS, at the Laboratory of Coordination Chemistry in Toulouse (LCC-Toulouse), where she is also head of the group “Engineering of Metal Nanoparticles”. She studied biochemistry and then organometallic chemistry at the University of Rennes in Pr P.H. Dixneuf’s group. After a PhD degree in molecular chemistry and homogeneous catalysis from the University of Toulouse (1993) she had a postdoctoral position in the Department of Catalysis at Rhodia-Lyon (1994-95). Afterwards she was appointed a CNRS permanent researcher in the group of B. Chaudret at the LCC-Toulouse in 1996, and became a group leader at the same institute in 2008.

Her current research interests cover the design of metal nanoparticles and composite nanomaterials by applying the concepts of molecular chemistry together with their application, mainly in colloidal or supported catalysis and in energy production.

Welcoming our new Associate Editor: Gregory Welch

We are pleased to introduce Dr Gregory Welch as the latest member of the New Journal of Chemistry Editorial Board.
Dr Gregory C Welch, University of Calgary, New Journal of Chemistry, NJC, Associate Editor

Dr. Gregory Welch is a Canada Research Chair in Solar Energy Materials and Devices and Associate Professor within the Department of Chemistry at the University of Calgary. He has published over 100 scientific papers in the areas of organometallic chemistry, metal-free catalysis, conducting polymers, and organic electronics. He obtained his BSc in Chemistry from the University of Calgary in 2003 and worked in the laboratories of Dr. Tristam Chivers and Dr. Warren Piers. He earned his PhD at the University of Windsor in 2008 under the supervision of Dr. Douglas Stephan where he helped create the concept of Frustrated Lewis Pairs. While trained as a synthetic inorganic chemist he diversified his skill set as a post-doctoral fellow working with Professor Guillermo Bazan at UC Santa Barbara. During this time Dr. Welch studied organic solar cells where he developed record performing molecular semiconductors and new methods to tune optoelectronic properties via Lewis acid-base chemistry. He started his independent career at Dalhousie University in 2012 before relocating to the University of Calgary in 2015.

Running an independent academic research laboratory (welchlab.wix.com/website), Dr. Welch has combined his expertise in synthetic chemistry, materials science, and device engineering to create a dynamic program focused on developing ultra-low-cost clean energy technologies. His research efforts focus on green synthetic chemistry, light-driven catalysis, and printed electronics.

NJC Editor-in-Chief Wais Hosseini wins Joseph-Achille Le Bel Award

Editor-in-Chief Professor Mir Wais Hosseini is one of two recipients of the the Grand Prix Joseph-Achille Le Bel Award, 2016 in recognition of his remarkable discoveries in supramolecular chemistry. The prize is awarded annually and recognises French chemists whose work have achieved international acclaim.

After starting his scientific career under the direction of Jean-Marie Lehn, Professor Hosseini created his own laboratory and focussed his research towards molecular tectonics’ which corresponds to large-scale (millimeter) molecular architectures in the solid state by self-assembling “tectons”. The formation of these non-covalent assemblages involves three types of interactions: coordination bonds, combinations of directional hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions, and van der Waals interactions. Their structure can be controlled and programmed according to one, two or even three dimensions by coding information at the tecton level.

His work has brought a major breakthrough in the field of supramolecular chemistry and the study of self-assembly processes as well developing compounds that can be regarded as a new generation of coordination polymers in the crystalline state. His work on “molecular tectonics” has been carried out for more than twenty years in his laboratory and has resulted in an international recognition of his team.

Professor Hosseini has also been the recipient of the CWS Organic Chemistry and Co-ordination Chemistry Prizes and the CNRS Silver Medal in 2011. His international recognition was rewarded by the European Academy of Sciences in 2004 and by the Academia Europaea in 2006.

Christina Moberg elected as President of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences

Graphical Abstract Professor Christina Moberg (Editorial Board Member, New Journal of Chemistry), was recently elected as the new President of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Upon her election as President in July, Professor Moberg said:
“As the new President, I see one important task being to emphasise the significance of basic science in social development. There is a risk that we concentrate too many resources on contemporary problems, forgetting that the primary task of scholarly research is to find solutions for as yet unidentified questions, thus fulfilling the needs of future generations”

Graphical Abstract Professor Moberg’s own research, at the Royal Institute of Technology, KTH focuses on organic chemistry.

In 1998, Professor Moberg was awarded the Göran Gustafsson Prize in Chemistry, for her achievements in synthetic organic chemistry, particularly for the methods with which she succeeded in solving the problem of dangerous mirror forms of molecules. She has also received an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Science at Lund University.

NJC Editor-in-Chief recipient of award in macrocyclic chemistry

Mir Wais Hosseini, Professor at the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Strasbourg and at the Institut Universitaire de France (IUF) has been honoured with the 2014 Izatt Christensen Award for Macrocyclic Chemistry. Professor Hosseini was presented with the award at the 9th International Symposium on Macrocyclic and Supramolecular Chemistry, held in Shanghai in June 2014.

This award, given to the top macrocyclic chemist in the world as selected by his/(her) peers, is sponsored by IBC Advanced Technologies, Inc. and is awarded yearly. Professor Hosseini received the award for his work in molecular tectonics and molecular machines. He joins a prestigous group of chemists working in the broad area of macrocyclic chemistry, including his Strasbourg colleague Jean-Pierre Sauvage, who received the first Izatt Christensen Award in 1991.

Update for the NJC Symposia in Sweden

Last announcement! The 3rd series of NJC Symposia: New Directions in Chemistry will take place in May 2014. These symposia are being organised with the collaboration of KTH in Stockholm and Lund University. The NJC Board and editors are being hosted by Profs Mikael Lindström and Christina Moberg at KTH and Prof. Ola Wendt in Lund. We warmly thank the hosts and their institutions for their support in making these events possible.

Schedule
