JAAS Issue 4 now online!

Issue 4 of JAAS is now available online.

On the front of the journal this month is a picture from Joshua R. Dettman and John W. Olesik from The Ohio State University, USA. John is actually our Regional Associate Editor for the Americas and is on our Editorial Board. Their paper is on the use of a single element calibration standard in semi-quantitative ICP-OES analysis. Using this method they were able to measure a total of 66 elements.

On the inside front cover we have a colourful image from Joachim Franzke and colleagues from the Leibniz-Institut für Analytische Wissenschaften in Germany. Their work has focused on the development of a new type of microhollow cathode discharge that can be used in analytical microplasma gas detection.

Join up with JAAS at the 2012 Asia-Pacific Winter Conference in South Korea!

Reminder for Early Bird Registration – submission deadline May 1st, 2012

The 2012 APWC will feature developments in spectrochemical analysis by inductively coupled plasma (ICP), AAS, GFAAS, various plasma sources, laser sources (LIBS, laser ablation) and chromatography. More than 200 scientists are expected with over 300 papers on modern plasma spectrochemistry . A three-day exhibition will feature new plasma instrumentation and many supporting products. Three plenary lectures, Company Invitation Lectures, and about 20 invited speakers will highlight each topic.

JAAS will be publishing a themed issue from the conference (more details for this will follow soon). Take a look at some of the papers published in the themed issue from the 2010 Asia Pacific Winter Conference, held in Chengdu, China.

Its going to be hot! Did you know that the average August temperature in Jeju is 36.5 degrees!

Atomic spectrometry in Central and Eastern Europe: submissions open

We will be publishing a web themed issue comprising work from Central and Eastern Europe in the field of analytical atomic spectrometry. The aim is to highlight, to the wider international community, the achievements in analytical atomic and mass spectrometry made by the researches from this area.

The Guest Editors for this collection are Professor Jiří Dědina of Charles University in Prague, and Professor Pawel Pohl of Wroclaw University of Technology.

Manuscripts are welcome until the submission deadline on 1 June 2012.

Spectr’Atom 2012: 19-22 June, Pau

The 2012 Spectr’Atom conference takes place at Palais Beaumont, Pau, France, 19-22 June.

This meeting is aimed at a wide spectrum of atomic spectrometry users and seeks to promote exchanges between francophone colleagues from Europe, Africa and Canada.

The organisers hope that such an exchange forum will contribute to the development of various sectors of the analytical sciences in French-speaking countries.

Submission of abstracts is open until 31 March, and more details can be found on the event website.

SCIX 2012

The former FACSS conference is now renamed SCIX (for SCIentific eXchange). The conference, still organized by FACSS, will take place in Kansas City this year starting on September 30 until October 5. JAAS Advisory board member Steven Ray will be the Program Chair and there will be many sessions devoted to Atomic Spectroscopy, such as Metallomics: The Vibrant Role of BioMetals in Biology, Speciation Analysis: Progress in Trace Metal Speciation, Isoscapes: Redefining the Landscape in the Archaeological and Geological Sciences with High Fidelity Isotope Ratio Analysis, Fundamental Aspects of Plasma Spectrochemistry: Using What We Learn to Improve Analytical Atomic Spectroscopy, Chemistry in Arts and Archaeology, New Plasmas, New Instrumentation, and New Approaches at the Frontier of Atomic Spectrometry, Atomic Spectrometry and the Analysis of Nanomaterials, Novel Sample Introduction Techniques and Tools for Atomic Spectroscopy, in addition to many contributing lectures.

The website is already up and running. As usual, RSC will be involved in the organization of some special sessions. Stay tuned for more information!

JAAS issue 3 is now available online.

The front cover of this issue features work by Frank Vanhaeke and colleagues from Ghent University and Janssen Research & Development, Belgium. They use laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) for assessing the distribution of a novel anti-tuberculosis compound containing bromine and its metabolites in rats. Compared to the traditional radioluminography technique, the LA-ICP-MS method does not require labelling of the drug compound with a radionuclide.

The inside front cover highlights work by R. Escobar Galindo and co-workers from Spain and Luxembourg, who report the in-depth multi-technique characterisation of chromium-silicon mixed oxides produced by reactive ion beam mixing of the Cr/Si interface. There is a great deal of interest in mixed metal-silicon oxides due to their suitability for a variety of applications, including as optical coatings with an adjustable refractive index. The authors employed a variety of techniques to look at the in depth composition and concentration profile of these materials.

Dear Colleagues ,

We are very proud and excited to continue this tradition of excellence by hosting the 11 EWLA (Gijón 2012).

Starting in 1994 this workshop has evolved from an informal meeting on laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry into an inter-continental meeting covering all topics relevant for laser ablation in elemental analysis. Nonetheless this meeting has ever since and shall continue to keep its workshop character as a base for an intense exchange of ideas between users and researchers of the techniques. It is thus open to everybody interested in laser ablation based analytical methods, fundamental and application oriented researchers, who want to present recent research highlights and applications but also to discuss problems and limitations that arise in this field.
