Anakon 2015 and Awards to JAAS Board Members

The ANAKON, a joint conference of German-speaking analytical chemists, organized by the German Chemical Society (GDCh) took place in Graz, Austria, from March 23 to March 26, 2015.

JAAS Editorial Board Member and Online Community Editor Professor Martín Resano (University of Zaragoza), was awarded the prestigious Bunsen-Kirchhoff Preiss for Analytical Spectroscopy for his work on the development of atomic spectrometric techniques.

In addition, during the opening session, JAAS Advisory Board member Professor Detlef Günther (ETH Zürich) was awarded with the Emich Badge (Emich-Plakette) of the ASAC, for merits in micro-and analytical chemistry and his research on LA-ICP-MS.

European Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry 2015 Plasma Award

JAAS Advisory Board member Jörg Feldmann, from the University of Aberdeen, received last week in Münster the 2015 European Award for Plasma Spectrochemistry. The laureate presented his excellent work on identification and quantification of organoarsenic species. Congratulations, Jörg!

Nominations are open for the JAAS Emerging Investigator Lectureship

We are delighted to announce we are welcoming nominations for the inaugural JAAS Emerging Investigator Lectureship. Launching to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the journal, the lectureship will be awarded annually from 2015 to recognise and support an emerging scientist working in the area of atomic spectrometry in the early stages of their independent career.

Lectureship details

The recipient of the lectureship will present their research at a relevant high-profile international meeting and receive a contribution of up to £2000 to cover associated travel and accommodation costs. They will be awarded a certificate and asked to contribute a Perspective or research article to JAAS.

Eligibility

The lectureship is open worldwide to researchers working in atomic spectrometry within scope of JAAS who are at an early stage of their independent career. Typically this will be within 10 years of completing their PhD, but appropriate consideration will be given to those who have taken a career break or followed a different study path.

Nominations

Nominations must be received by the Editorial Office by March 1st 2015; researchers cannot nominate themselves and members of the Editorial Board judging panel are not eligible to receive the lectureship.

Nominations must include:

• A letter of recommendation, including achievements and evidence of research independence of the nominee

• A brief biography of the nominee, including a summary of education and career

• A list of relevant publications, highlighting those of particular significance as judged by the nominator

Selection

The lectureship winner will be selected by the JAAS Editorial Board based on the originality, quality, impact and significance of the candidate’s research, as highlighted in their nomination. The winner will be selected at the spring Editorial Board meeting and the recipient announced shortly afterwards.

To make a nomination please send the Editorial Office a letter of recommendation, nominee biography and publication list no later than March 1st 2015.

2015 Bunsen-Kirchoff Award for Analytical Spectroscopy

2015 Bunsen-Kirchoff Award for Analytical Spectroscopy

The DAAS – German Working group for Analytical Spectroscopy – regularly awards the “Bunsen-Kirchhoff-Preis für analytische Spektroskopie” to honour preferably the work of young scientists from universities, research institutes or industry who made excellent contributions to analytical spectroscopy. Especially preferred is an oeuvre in new areas like spectroscopy in nano compartments, spectroscopy of biomolecules a.s.o. The Award consists of an award-document and an amount of € 2.500,00 sponsored by Perkin Elmer and the DAAS seeks nominations for the 2015 Bunsen-Kirchhoff Award for Analytical Spectroscopy. The Award will be presented at the ANAKON in March 2015 in Graz (Austria).

A nomination (in electronic form) should include:
1. letter with the candidate´s accomplishments
2. list of publications or recent work,
3. scientific curriculum vitae stating the age of the candidate; the candidate´s
address, phone fax and e-mail.

Nominations can be made by members of DAAS but eligibility is open for any scientist meeting the requirements. Self-nomination is excluded. The decision as to whom the prize is to be awarded shall be made by a jury consisting of the current members of the board of DAAS.

European Workshop on Laser Ablation – Oral Prize Winner!

Frank Vanhaecke presents Amy Managh with the JAAS Best Oral Prize at EWLA 2014.

The 12th European Workshop on Laser Ablation was recently held at the Royal Holloway University of London, 8-11 July. The wide range of applications and fundamental developments presented at the meeting was impressive, as were the large number of posters and oral presentations.

Frank Vanhaecke, Chair of the Editorial Board for JAAS, was on hand to award the JAAS sponsored Best Oral Prize to Amy Managh, Loughborough Univeristy, for her talk titled ‘Single Cell Analysis Using a Fast-Washout LA-ICP-MS Interface’.

She was presented with a certificate and iPod nano. Congratulations Amy!

Thank you also to RHUL for being such wonderful hosts. We look forward to the 13th EWLA in 2016.

2nd International Glow Discharge Spectroscopy Symposium (IGDSS)

The 2^nd international GD symposium was held recently at the Czech Technical University in Prague from 7-9 April. The Organizing Committee (lead by Chairman Peter Robinson) did an excellent job of putting together a program examining various aspects of all glow discharge spectroscopies across a wide range of applications. Highlights included the use of GDs for exotic bulk materials analysis, in thin film depth profiling, their use in ultra-high resolution electron spectroscopies, for the direct analysis of liquids, as a competitive technique to Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry, and even used in electron-beam welding applications. Approximately 100 attended the conference from 20 different countries, leading to a lively and vibrant discussion.

The IGDSS host the Payling Prize in Glow Discharge Spectroscopy. This prestigious prize is awarded to the young scientist who gives the best presentation during a meeting of the European Working Group for Glow Discharge. On this occasion, the Awardee was Dr. Sohail Mushtaq, a postdoctoral research fellow at LondonMet, for his work “Effect of small quantities of oxygen in a Neon GD”.

Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry 2014 and Plasma Award

As you already know if you are following us on twitter, the 2014 Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry was held on January 6 – 11 in Amelia Island, Florida, USA. The conference, chaired by JAAS Advisory Board member Ramon Barnes, was very successful, as approximately 500 participants presented 5 Plenary lectures, 37 invited lectures, 75 oral contributions and 180 posters, while more than 25 companies participated in the exhibition. 6 Heritages lectures were also imparted by Barry L. Sharp, Nicoló Omenetto, Les Ebdon, Michael J. Collins, Andrew T. Zander and Freddy Adams. In addition, more than 80 short courses were organized.

Among the highlights of the conference, the Plasma Spectroscopy Symposium, in which JAAS Editorial Board member Gary Hieftje received the Winter Conference Award in Plasma Spectrochemistry, has to be featured. The laureate discussed on Advances in instrumentation and methods for plasma spectrochemistry. Congratulations, Gary!

JAAS sponsored a poster Award consisting in one personal electronic subscription to JAAS, an iPod Nano and a certificate, and the winner was Allen White, from the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana, for his work on an Application of a High-Frequency Spark Discharge as an Ion Source for Ambient Mass Spectrometry, coauthored by Steve Ray, Kevin Pfeuffer and Gary Hieftje. Congratulations!

We would like to remind you that there is a JAAS Themed Issue devoted to this conference. If you want to submit a work that was presented in Amelia Island, please remember that the deadline for submission is 17^th February 2014.

Finally, the next European Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry will be hosted in Munster, Germany, chaired by Uwe Karst and Michael Sperling.

XXXVIII Colloquium Spectroscopicum Internationale and CSI Award for Ramon Barnes

As you already know if you are following us on twitter, the XXXVIII Colloquium Spectroscopicum Internationale was held on June 17 – 21, 2012 in Tromso, Norway. The conference was chaired by Yngvar Thomassen, and counted with more than 200 participants who travel to the Far North to enjoy the land of the midnight sun. Several members of the JAAS Boards attended the conference and presented their latest works, including Martín Resano, Steven Ray, María Montes-Bayón, José Broekaert and Detlef Günther.

In addition, during the conference, the CSI Award for life achievement in Spectrochemistry was presented and the winner was JAAS Advisory Board Member Ramon Barnes. The Award was presented by Gary Hieftje. Congratulations, Ramon!

European Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry 2013 and Plasma Award

As you already know if you are following us on twitter, the European Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry 2013 was held on February 10 – 15, 2012 in Krakow, Poland. The conference, chaired by JAAS Editorial Board member Joanna Szpunar and co-chaired by Pawel Koscielniak, was very successful, as approximately 500 participants presented 26 invited lectures, 100 oral contributions and more than 220 posters, while more than 25 companies participated in the exhibition. Moreover, several excellent workshops were organised.

Among the highlights of the conference, in addition to the excellent social events where all participants could appreciate the hospitality of Polish people, the Opening ceremony in which JAAS Editorial Board member Norbert Jakubowski received the 2013 European Award for Plasma Spectrochemistry has to be featured. The laureate presented his excellent work on Development of ICP-MS based methods for label free detection of (semi)metals in single cells. Congratulations, Norbert!

JAAS sponsored a poster Award consisting in one personal electronic subscription to JAAS, an iPod Nano and a certificate, and the winner was Georgia Sanabria for her work on an Alternative method for fast and precise Pb isotope ratio determination in crude oil, asphaltenes kerogen and sedimentary rocks by GC-MC-ICPMS, coauthored by Christophe Pécheyran, Sylvain Berail, Olivier F.X. Donard from CNRS / Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour. Congratulations!
