Atheroprotective pathway of superfood spirulina

Emma Eley writes on a HOT Food & Function article in Chemistry World

Scientists investigating the health enhancing properties of spirulina have identified that its atheroprotective activity may be due to it having a protein with a similar structure to bilirubin.

Spirulina, a blue–green algae taken as a food supplement, has gained cult superfood status because it is packed full of proteins, polysaccharides and vitamins. It has also sparked a craze of urban gardening – barrels of the edible algae are being grown on rooftops in Bangkok, Thailand. Although its atheroprotective effects are well established, scientists have been unsure about the mechanism behind its activity.

Now a team, led by Petr Nachtigal at Charles University in Prague, say they are closer to the answer. Spirulina’s atheroprotective activity was already thought to be due to an algal protein complex called phycocyanobilin (PCB). PCB is structurally related to the human bile pigment bilirubin, which is clinically proven to protect against oxidative-stress related diseases such as atherosclerosis.

The Third Luxembourgish Nutrition Conference (Nulux) – Nutrition, Chronic Health Complications, and Healthy Ageing

The Third Luxembourgish Nutrition Conference (Nulux) will take place in Luxembourg on October 25, 2013, at the Coque Conference Centre in Luxembourg City. The conference will focus on nutritional strategies for the prevention of chronic diseases (such as cardio-vascular complications, diabetes mellitus type 2, several types of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases) and nutritional strategies to support healthy ageing.

The programe will include a keynote lecture from Professor Michael Leitzmann, oral presentations, and poster sessions. Interpretation of epidemiological studies, dietary intervention strategies, and the relationship between nutrients and non-nutrients and health benefits will be discussed in the following sessions:

• Morning session: Overview – Diet and Chronic Diseases: Considerations for Assessing a Healthy Diet

• Afternoon session I: Diet and Chronic Diseases – Focus Micronutrients and Phytochemicals

• Afternoon session II: Diet and Chronic Diseases – New Strategies Toward a Healthier Nutrition

Food & Function issue 8 is now available online

Issue 8 of Food & Function is now available to read online.

Issue 8 front coverThe front cover this month features work by Nick Kalogeropoulos and co-workers from Athens, Greece. In their work they analyse the oil of olive fruits picked from the same trees at three different stages of maturity, and present the results. Data on quality parameters and antioxidant activity of the obtained oils were collected, and, the potential of oils’ polar extract to inhibit total serum lipid oxidation and inflammatory markers in stimulated human mononuclear cells was assayed.

Read the article in full – it’s free to access for the next six weeks:
