12th International Nutrition & Diagnostics Conference 2012 – INDC 2012

The International Nutrition & Diagnostics Conference 2012 will be held between the 27-30th August at the Carolinium, Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic.

INDC is an international forum for scientific discussion focused on understanding the relationship and connections between nutrition and clinical diagnostics.

The aim of this multidisciplinary conference is to bridge the gaps between the specialists and fields of science as diverse as nutrition, clinical biochemistry, food technology, analytical chemistry and medicine. The mission of the INDC is to increase our understanding of the effects of common food on long term health, performance, mental and physical fitness.

To achieve this goal, we need to gain insight into bioactive compounds in food, how they are absorbed and metabolized in the body, taking into account the genetic and metabolic uniqueness of individuals.  This requires very sensitive analytical methods to determine what we really eat. The same instrumentation can be used to control quality and content of food and to analyze metabolites and nutritional biomarkers.

The deadline for early registration has been extended to the 30th June 2012Register for INDC 2012 now!

Call for Posters

Posters are an opportunity for researchers and practitioners to present and demonstrate their late-breaking results, ongoing research, and work in progress.

Posters are intended for authors and participants to engage in discussions about their work, and to obtain feedback from their peers in an informal setting.

The deadline for poster presentations has been extended to the 30th June 2012.

For further information about this conference, please visit the website.

Still time to register for Soft Matter Approaches to Structured Foods: Faraday Discussion 158

There’s still just time to submit your poster abstract for Soft Matter Approaches to Structured Foods: Faraday Discussion 158 – by the deadline date of 25 May.

Food materials are unusual as soft matter. They are highly complex, operating on multiple length scales and phases and structured via multiple externally applied fields.

This discussion will focus on state-of-the-art approaches like soft-glass rheology, multiscale/mesoscale simulation techniques, theories on slow dynamics, and driven soft matter systems, within these themes:

  • Structuring formation via external fields (shear, intensive heating, electric)
  • Structuring formation via self-assembly (adsorption at interfaces/organogels)
  • Slow dynamics in stabilized/jammed foods
  • Simulation of structured soft matter/foods at multiple length scales

The aim is to provide a platform for the exchange of views between food scientists and non-food experts from the soft matter community.  Food & Function board members Dr Job Ubbink, Professor Alejandro Marangoni and Professor Erik van der Linden are all speaking at the Discussion.

Taking part in a Faraday Discussion is a great way to get your research work better known. To have your own poster space at the meeting be sure to submit yours now .

Registration is quick and simple via our online booking system, so act now.

Dr Ruud van der Sman and the rest of the Scientific Committee look forward to welcoming you to Wageningen in July 2012.

Delivery of Functionality in Complex Food Systems

The 4th International Conference on Delivery of Functionality in Complex Food Systems was held  this week in Guelph, Canada and I was there representing Food & Function.  The conference was hosted and organised by the University of Guelph with the theme of ‘Physically-Inspired Approaches from the Nanoscale to the Microscale’.  The aim of this international symposium, now in its fourth year, is to focus on both basic science and functionality in food.  As such, the spotlight was firmly set on the delivery of functionality by exploring and manipulating the fundamental physical and chemical aspects of food.  This focus makes Food & Function a perfect partner and we are proud to be publishing a themed issue of research presented at the conference, due for publication in early 2012.

Over three days world renowned speakers presented on ‘Engineering Self-Assembly in Food Systems Principles and Applications’, ‘Novel Structures for Engineered Bioactive Delivery’ and ‘Food Structuring as a Means to Modulate the Physiological Response of Foods’.  The oral sessions were complemented by a poster session with over 40 contributions. Food & Function board members Job Ubbink, Julian McClements and Erik van der Linden were amongst the invited speakers and Alejandro Marangoni was chair of the organising committee.

Anna Simpson, Deputy Editor Food & Function

Food & Fun at the Food & Function IFT stand

It has been a busy few days on the RSC Publishing stand at the IFT conference in New Orleans. Visitors to the stand could collect a free copy of Food & Function and browse our food science books – we also had a range of activities and events on the stand….

Food & Function Stand at IFT

Food & Function at the IFT in New Orleans

On Sunday we challenged delegates to test their taste buds with the “Chocolate Challenge”. Visitors to the stand tried US, UK and European chocolate and had to select their favourite – a fun way to highlight one of our popular food science titles “The Science of Chocolate”. The competition between the UK and European chocolate was close – the European chocolate came out on top in the end!

On Monday visitors to the stand joined us for cake to toast Food & Function as they chatted to Food & Function Editorial and Advisory  Board members Eric Decker, Julian McClements and E. Allen Foegeding.

The Food & Function blog competition asking whether longevity foods exist and what they may be also stimulated some very interesting discussions at the stand. The blog competition is open until July 1stupload your post today!
