Delivery of Functionality in Complex Food Systems – Abstract Submission Deadline 20th May

The 5th International Symposium on Delivery of Functionality in Complex Food Systems: Physically-Inspired Approaches from the Nanoscale to the Microscale will be taking place in Haifa, Israel from September 30 – October 3, 2013.

Abstract Submission

Early bird registration is open until July 16th 2013

The emphasis of this meeting will be on the application of scientific principles towards the rational design and fabrication of healthy, attractive and sustainable foods. The meeting will focus on understanding the basic physical principles behind the co-assembly of food components and their utilization for delivering various functional components, for promoting both health and enjoyment of the consumer.

This meeting is aimed at scientists from various backgrounds, including Food Science, Food Technology, Food Physics, Physical Chemistry, Biophysics, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Polymer Science and Nanotechnology, as well as food-professionals from food and ingredient companies.

Main Themes:

  • Advances in engineering self-assembly: novel molecular architectures and structures for the delivery of food supplements/additives
  • Efficacy of bioactive delivery systems in food: programmed release and bioavailability
  • Safety and regulation of nutraceutical delivery systems

2nd Oxford Functional Food Conference – Poster prize winner

The 2nd Oxford Function Food Conference was held at The Oxford Hotel from the 13th-14th November 2012.  This year’s conference focused on functional foods and the role they play in helping to tackle obesity, diabetes and inflammation, and the 2-day programme included contributions from the UK, Europe, Canada and the US in the form of plenary lectures, symposium sessions and poster sessions.

Food & Function was delighted to be able to sponsor a poster prize for innovation at this year’s conference, which was awarded to Caroline Montelius from Lund University for her poster “Supplementation of thylakoids to a high carbohydrate meal decrease feelings of hunger, elevate CCK and prevent hypoglycaemia in overweight women“.  Congratulations Caroline!

Joint winter meeting 2012: Dietary Strategies for the Management of Cardiovascular Risk

A reminder that the joint winter meeting of the Nutritional Society and the Royal Society of Medicine will be held at the Royal Society of Medicine in London between the 11th-12th December 2012.  The title of this meeting is “Dietary Strategies for the Management of Cardiovascular Risk“.

Topics that will be presented on during the meeting include dietary guidelines, policy and CVD risk reduction, dietary saturated fatty acids, cholesterol, carbohydrates, n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, pre- and pro-biotics, phytochemicals, vitamin D and fruit and vegetables.  The provisional programme and list of speakers can be found on the website.

The 2012 AICR Annual Research Conference on Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity and Cancer

The 2012 American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) Annual Research Conference will be held in Washington, DC at the Capital Hilton Hotel from the 1st-2nd November 2012.  

The conference provides a unique forum to bring together researchers and clinicians for a two-day event dedicated to increasing knowledge, stimulating research and promoting the prevention and treatment of cancer through nutrition, physical activity and weight management.  This year’s conference will specifically focus on the following areas:

Poster prize winner at the International Nutrition and Diagnostics Conference 2012

The International Nutrition & Diagnostics Conference 2012 was held between the 27-30th August at the Carolinium, Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic.  The aim of this multidisciplinary conference was to bridge the gaps between specialists and fields of science as diverse as nutrition, clinical biochemistry, food technology, analytical chemistry and medicine.Winner of the Food & Function poster prize at the 12th International Nutrition & Diagnostics Conference 2012

The conference program covered a broad range of topics including functional foods, nutrition and health, nutrition and clinical diagnostics, phytochemicals and natural antioxidants and chemistry and human health.

Food & Function was honoured to be able to sponsor a poster prize at the event which was awarded to Zdeňka Polívková, Petr Šmerák, Hana Demová, and Milan Houška from Charles University and the Food Research Institute, Prague, for their poster on Antimutagenic Effects of Lycopene and Tomato Purée (pictured right receiving their prize), and received a copy of the book Mass Spectrometry & Nutrition Research.

Congratulations to the group on winning this prize.

The 16th biennial meeting for the Society for Free Radical Research International (SFRRI)

The 16th SRRRI Biennial Meeting will be held at Imperial College London, UK, between the 6th-9th September 2012.  This meeting will be a premier forum for the latest advancements in free radical research.

The meeting will include morning plenary lectures, followed by afternoon parallel themed sessions as well as early evening poster presentations.  Symposium 2 on Phytochemicals (Micronutrients) in Redox Signalling (Clore) is being held on the morning of the 6th September and is Chaired by Food & Function Associate Editor Professor Cesar Fraga (University of Buenos Aires, Argentina) alongside Professor Helmut Sies (Heinrich-Heine-University Duesseldorf, Germany).  Invited speakers include: Professor Young-Joon Surh, Professor Patricia Oteiza, Dr Francisco Villarreal and Professor Jeremy Spencer.

The OCC world congress – ‘Oxidants and Antioxidants in Biology’

The world congress “Oxidants and Antioxidants in Biology” was held in Alba, Italy, 20th-23rd June 2012. It was a joint meeting of the Oxygen Club of California (OCC) and the University of Turin, Italy, co-sponsored by the Linus Pauling Institute, Oregon State University, U.S.A. This congress is part of a serial of congresses organized every other year by the OCC that gather highly recognized scientists in areas that convey basic and applied medical research.

This year, the subject of the meeting was “Cell signaling and nutrient-gene interactions,” having sessions on NRF2-driven regulation of antioxidant defenses, nutrient-gene interactions and epigenetics, novel roles of micronutrients, lipid oxidation and signaling, and epigenetics, metabolism, and aging. The Congress had an attendance of 220 delegates from all over the world, including speakers and chairpersons, general attendants, and young scientists.

Selected from about one hundred presentations 4 Young Investigator prizes were given. The selection was done based on the quality of the work and the proficiency of the presenter by a committee of 6 senior scientists (including: John Maguire, Berkeley; Emily Ho, Corvalis; Josiane Cillard, Rennes; and Nesrin Ozer, Istambul).

Food & Function and the Royal Society of Chemistry awarded a prize for the best work in the area of Nutrition to Guliz Armagan from the Department of Biochemistry, School of Pharmacy, Ege University, Izmir, Turkey. The work, “Induction of oxidative stress, apoptosis and inflammation in rat brain regions by D-serine” was co-authored by Lutfiye Kanit, and Ayfer Yalcin from the same University.  Many congratulations to Guliz on winning this prize.

The Nutrition Society – Summer Meeting 2012

The Summer Meeting of the Nutrition Society with be held at Queen’s University Belfast between the 16-19th July 2012.  Around 400+ delegates from the UK, Ireland and other European countries are expected to attend – from nutritionists, dietitians and food industry representatives, through to academics, students and researchers.

The programme focuses on translational nutrition and the links between research, practice and policy, and the topics of the four main symposia will be:

  • Innovation in diet and lifestyle assessment
  • Intervention study design and personalised nutrition
  • Diet, insulin resistance and diabetes
  • Diet and aging

The current provisional list of invited speakers include Food & Function Advisory Board member Professor Mike Gibney from University College Dublin.  More details about the event and the speakers can be found on the conference website.
