Winners of the 2020 EES Lectureship: Yana Vaynzof and Wooyul Kim

We are delighted to announce that the 2020 EES Lectureship has been jointly awarded to Professor Yana Vaynzof and Dr Wooyul Kim!

Established in 2019, the Lectureship recognises and supports those at an early stage of their independent career within the fields of energy and environmental sciences, and is a platform for early career researchers to showcase their research to the wider scientific community.

The recipients will each receive a £500 honorarium, will be given the opportunity to attend and present their research at a leading international online conference, and will be invited to contribute a Review-type article to EES.

Yana is an Associate Professor at the Technical University of Dresden, Germany. Since 2019, she has been the Chair for Emerging Electronic Technologies at the Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden, and the Integrated Center for Applied Physics and Photonic Materials. She received her PhD from the University of Cambridge, UK in 2011, and was previously a junior professor at the University of Heidelberg, Germany (2014-2018).

Her research interests focus on emerging photovoltaics based on organic, colloidal quantum dot and perovskite materials. Her work aims to address the challenges of stability and reproducibility of emerging photovoltaic devices by identifying the causes and developing strategies for the mitigation of these challenges. To achieve this, Yana not only utilizes a broad range of experimental methods, but also develops new spectroscopic techniques and methodologies for the study of material physics of novel semiconductors.

She was the only female recipient of an ERC Starting Grant in the panel PE3 Condensed Matter Physics in 2016, and was also the recipient of the 2018 Walter Kalkhof-Rose Memorial Award for outstanding young researchers in the natural sciences as well as the Fulbright-Cottrell Award for innovation in research and teaching.

Wooyul has been an Assistant Professor at Sookmyung Women’s University, South Korea, working in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering since 2016. He received his PhD from Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) in 2012, and went on to carry out postdoctoral research at Lawrence Berkley National Laboratory, USA (2012-2016).

His recent research focuses on using time-resolved operando spectroscopy to investigate photo- (and electro-) catalytic mechanisms, including revealing key reaction intermediates, analysing samples used for water reduction and oxidation, and gaining a microscopic perspective of electrode surfaces in photoelectrochemical cells.

Professor Guo-Liang Chai is awarded the 2018 Energy & Environmental Science Readers’ Choice Lectureship

We are delighted to announce that Professor Guo-Liang Chai has been selected by the EES Editorial Board as the winner of the 2018 “Energy & Environmental Science Readers’ Choice Lectureship”.

Professor Guo-liang Chai

The Lectureship is awarded annually to one outstanding young scientist (within 10 years of receiving their PhD) who has published in the journal. The winner is selected by the EES Editorial Board from a shortlist of authors of the most-read articles from each issue of EES in the previous year.

Professor Guo-Liang Chai has been a Professor at Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter (FJIRSM), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) since 2016. He received his Ph.D. in 2012 from FJIRSM, CAS. After that, he worked as a Postdoc at Tokyo Institute of Technology from 2012 to 2014, and then joined University College London as a Research Associate from 2014 to 2016. His current research interests focus on functional materials for energy storage and conversion.

Perovskite, Organic Photovoltaics and Optoelectronics (IPEROP2019)

The Asia-Pacific International Conference on Perovskite, Organic Photovoltaics and Optoelectronics (IPEROP)  will be held in Kyoto, Japan from 28th to 29th of January 2019.

The main topics of this conference are related to material preparation, modelling and fabrication of hybrid and organic photovoltaic cells, including dye-sensitized solar cells, organic thin film solar cells, quantum dot solar cells, and perovskite solar cells. Building upon success of the previous AP-HOPV conference, this Conference will provide an excellent opportunity for scientists and engineers worldwide to exchange information and discussions on the latest developments in photovoltaics.

Novel Materials for Energy Conversion and Optoelectronics

Energy & Environmental Science and Sustainable Energy & Fuels are delighted to be supporting the International Conference on Novel Materials for Energy Conversion and Optoelectronics taking place in Santa Fe, United States, between 11-12 December 2018.

The scope of the conference covers a broad range of research directions related to novel materials for applications in energy conversion and optoelectronics ranging from photovoltaics and photoelectrochemical and photocatalytic production of solar fuels, to sensing and light emission in electroluminescent devices and lasers. Particular emphasis is on understanding the relationship between the structural properties of materials and their function in final devices, which is key to fostering further advances in device performance. Consequently, novel theoretical and characterization tools represent topics of keen interest to this conference.

Water splitting using a single catalyst

Electrochemical water splitting typically requires two catalysts, one to evolve oxygen and one for hydrogen. However, scientists lead by Xile Hu at EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland, have discovered that nickel phosphide can act as a catalyst, evolving both hydrogen oxygen from water simultaneously. Nickel phosphide was loaded onto a carbon electrode in an alkaline electrolyser which lead to the material adopting a core-shell structure, with a nickel phosphide core and an active nickel oxide species on the outside. The team observed successful water splitting, with the evolution of both hydrogen and oxygen and a current density of 10mA/cm2 at a low water splitting potential of 1.63V.
