Are you going to Experimental Biology? See you there!

If you’re in San Diego for the 2012 Experimental Biology conference, make sure you drop by Booth #416.

We will be showcasing our journals and books and we will be giving away FREE copies of our ‘hot off the press’ new booklet containing a collection of our best biological chemistry articles!

But why is the 2012 Experimental Biology conference important to a publisher historically renowned for high quality chemistry research?

In response to the needs of the increasingly interdisciplinary community our activities have evolved over recent years. Our new and more established journals and books cover many of the most important areas of biological chemistry research.

RSC Biological Chemistry titles are creating a new paradigm in biology by addressing real problems and real scientific issues of concern in todays world. The journals we will be highlighting are…

Lab on a Chip, Integrative Biology, Metallomics, Molecular BioSystems, Food & Function and Photochemical & Photobiological Sciences.

Book series include the RSC Drug Discovery Series, RSC Biomolecular Sciences Series and the RSC Issues in Toxicology Series.

So whether you’re looking for the latest cutting-edge research, needing to access top quality reference works, or finding the best place to publish your biological chemistry research, choose RSC Publishing.

RSC Publishing at the Spring ACS

RSC Publishing exhibition boothAt the Spring ACS in San Diego last month the RSC Booth was once again hard to miss in the Exhibition Hall. As delegates flocked to find out how the RSC has been working to represent the chemical science community, there was plenty to keep everyone occupied.

With more than 30 journal titles on display, including new titles Toxicology Research and Biomaterials Science, the RSC portfolio encompasses a broad subject footprint. Our new look journal brochures, designed to showcase content, outline key information about the journal and – at a slimline 4 pages – be easy to transport, were available for delegates to peruse and take away. To aid users in finding the titles most closely associated with their areas of research, our journals, books and key products are also now classified into 13 subject portfolios.

ChemSpider Coffee & Cookies EventVisitors to the stand were able to browse our latest book titles and take advantage of a 30 percent show discount. Plus our competition to win an Amazon kindle proved popular. The lucky winner, selected at random, was a scientist based at the University of Portland, Oregon, USA.

There were three lucky winners in our daily e-membership competition, who each walked away with an iPod shuffle. As an e-member of the RSC, for just £20 a year, you can engage with an online community of over 20,000 scientists worldwide and keep current with 12 digital editions of Chemistry World, the best way to keep up to date with the world of chemistry.

The ChemSpider Coffee and Cookie event on Tuesday morning was well attended, with around 100 delegates taking the opportunity to find out more about the free chemical database. Several people stayed to receive one-to-one demonstrations of the benefits of ChemSpider, which provides fast text and structure search access to over 26 million structures from hundreds of data sources.

Another activity-filled meeting! We look forward to seeing you in Philadelphia in August.

RSC Publishing and Open Access

Open access, deposition of articles and copyright issues can be a confusing and emotive issue for authors, publishers and funding agencies alike.

This can be partially explained by the sheer complexity of the subject, the legal phrasing of the various licenses and supporting documents, and the fact that many publishers have slightly different policies.

At RSC Publishing, we like to make it easy for authors to find the information they need.

Firstly, we give journal authors the choice of making their article Open Access through RSC Open Science. If you choose this publication route, you will pay an ‘article processing fee’ after peer-review and acceptance. The final ‘article of record’ is made available to all, immediately, via our website without any barriers to access.

Secondly, when it comes to access and deposition, we comply with the requirements of most of the major funding agencies, such as NIH and EPSRC. If we have published your article, you can deposit the accepted author form of it in a non-commercial repository. This includes pre-submission (eg ArXiV) and post-acceptance repositories, such as that of your institution or your funding body, plus your organisation’s intranet. You can also use your article in your thesis, both in print and online.

An embargo period of 12 months from acceptance applies to the deposition of non-Open Access articles in repositories that are available to the public.

Full details on all options for deposition, with associated Licence to Publish forms, can be found on our website.

Thirdly, as a journal author with RSC Publishing, you retain the copyright on your published work. We do not ask you to transfer the copyright to us, the publisher. All we ask is that you sign an exclusive Licence to Publish. You can find out more here.

Finally, all these policies are occasionally subject to changes and amendments. If you need any clarification, or have any questions, please contact us  – we’re always happy to help.

Could this be your library?

Have you seen the front cover of the RSC Publishing Catalogue?

This could be your library!

In 2011, we asked the librarian community to enter their library pictures into the RSC Publishing Catalogue front cover competition. This competition proved extremely popular – drawing entrants from countries across the globe including France, Lithuania, Slovenia, Spain, Tajikistan, South Africa, Turkey, UK and USA. Previous versions include:

  • RSC Publishing Catalogue 2011 – RSC Library, London, UK
  • RSC Publishing Catalogue 2012 – the George Peabody Library, Baltimore, Maryland, USA, taken by Norm Barker.

Steve Stich, from the Sheridan Libraries, of the Johns Hopkins University, USA won the 2011 Library Photograph Competition, voted for by 115 RSC staff and the RSC Library Advisory Board (entries can be seen on pages 2 – 5 of the 2012 Catalogue).

If you are interested in finding out about the next Library Photograph Competition, where your could be the winning Library featured on the front cover of the RSC Publishing Catalogue 2013, review the below instructions.

New journal: Biomaterials Science

Front cover of Biomaterials ScienceAre you looking for a biomaterials journal which bridges materials science, biology, chemistry and physics? One which publishes high impact science?

A journal which through free access will ensure your work has maximum visibility?

Academic and industrial researchers in the field of biomaterials have a new option for the publication of their research in 2012, with the launch of our latest journal Biomaterials Science. The journal is a collaborative venture between RSC Publishing and the Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences, Kyoto University, Japan. Biomaterials Science will be a multidisciplinary journal covering the fundamental science of biomaterials and their biomedical applications.

The journal will open for submissions from March 2012, advance articles will be available from August 2012 and the first issue will be issue 1, 2013.

Published research will have very high visibility – from launch until December 2014, all content will be freely available online for all readers via the website.

Norio Nakatsuji, Professor and Director at WPI Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences, Kyoto University has been appointed Co-Editor-in-Chief of the new journal. He said:

“It is my great honour and pleasure to work with the Royal Society of Chemistry on the launch of this new cross-disciplinary journal integrating materials science with the cellular and biomedical sciences. Our institute – Kyoto University’s WPI Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences (iCeMS) aims to fuse these fields, focusing on stem cells and mesoscopic investigations of living systems and functional materials. The launch of this new journal is therefore an important event for our institute, as with it we seek to present a global platform for fundamental research as well as varied applications of this rapidly expanding field created at the crossing point of biology, chemistry, and physics.”

Professor Phillip Messersmith from Northwestern University, USA, also Co-Editor-in-Chief, added: “It is an exhilarating time for the biomaterials research community, as it is enjoying rapid growth, making exciting fundamental discoveries, and driving the development of novel life-saving and life-enhancing therapeutic materials and devices. I look forward to helping shape Biomaterials Science into one of leading journals in the field.”

Authors with research that they would like to be considered for the first issues of Biomaterials Science can submit online from March 2012 www.rsc.org/biomaterialsscience
