Online Information Show 2011 Winners

Online Information 2011 RSC Publishing Stand 270 Thank you to all those that joined us at Online Information this year, we were delighted to see customers – new and current and our agents and distributors.

We’re really pleased that our recycled cardboard stand stood the test of time and survived the exhibition, proving to be a great asset and receiving lots of positive comments and photographs.

We had several downloads of our new free apps – RSC Mobile and ChemSpider Mobile.

ChemSpider demonstration We gave many demonstrations for the RSC’s fabulous free chemical database – ChemSpider and lots of requests for userguides to be sent on after the show. If you would like to receive any userguides, please email sales@rsc.org quoting reference P11113.

ChemSpider currently contains over 26 million compounds from over 400 resources through structure and text-based searching, allowing access to a wealth of information.

Mass Spectrometry Bulletin Discontinuation

RSC Publishing would like to announce the discontinuation of the print database Mass Spectrometry Bulletin (MSB).

Mass Spectrometry Bulletin will be discontinued at the end of 2011 and will not be available for renewal in 2012. As a print subscription product, our customers retain archival rights to the print versions of Mass Spectrometry Bulletin they have received.

If you are looking for an alternative subscription, please review the below:

Chromatography Abstracts – print only database

RightsLink and permission requests

Are you an author? Do you need permission to use material from an RSC journal article? If so, you’ll be delighted to hear that the permission request process is now much quicker and easier, and available 24/7.

That’s because we have just introduced the RightsLink system for processing requests to use material from RSC journals. Go to the Instructions for using RightsLink to find out what to do.

If you are an RSC author, and would like to reproduce your own figures, etc in another publication, you do not have to request permission.

Also, if you are submitting an article or chapter to an RSC publication and you wish to reproduce figures from another RSC publication, you do not have to request permission.

All details can be found on our Permission Request pages.

To reproduce material from other RSC publications, such as Chemistry World, Education in Chemistry or RSC books, you will still need to use the Permission Request Form.

Updates to RSC Free Access Content

From 5th January 2012, RSC Publishing customers and users of scientific research content will be able to access the following free content through the RSC Publishing Platform:

2,400+ articles from the first two volumes of all new journals from RSC Publishing since 2008 (for 2012 this includes Catalysis Science & Technology, RSC Advances and Toxicology Research)
3,500+ articles from the first issue of each volume of RSC journals back to the year 2000 (except Faraday Discussions, Annual Reports and Issues in Environmental Science & Technology)
First chapter of 1,050+ RSC eBooks on the RSC Publishing Platform
Articles part of a special promotion
Chemistry Education Research and Practice (open access)
RSC Open Science – articles that authors have paid to be made freely available.

Who can access this free content?

All users of RSC content including:

RSC Publishing Platform personal account holders
Librarians’ Portal account holders
RSC Members
RSC Publishing customers and users
- Institutions and organisations on trial and who have registered IP addresses with us
- Previous customers who access purchase content like RSC Journals Archive and RSC eBooks
- Previous customers who access journal content for the years they have subscribed to.

With the amends to the RSC free access content, we have also launched a new RSC Journals Archive, which will cover content from 1841 to 2007.

The below describes the content that current and past RSC Publishing customers maintain access to, in addition to the free access content highlighted above:

The years of RSC journals that you have subscribed to (for example, if you subscribed to an RSC journal like Chemical Communications (ChemComm) in 2006 – 2010 but did not renew in 2011, you would maintain access to 2006 – 2010 but not have access to articles before or after this period unless they are part of the free access content model.)
Those with registered IP addresses can access the first two volumes of new journals, even after they come off the free access new journal content model (this currently includes Analytical Methods, Chemical Science, Energy & Environmental Science, Food & Function, Integrative Biology, MedChemComm, Metallomics, Nanoscale and Polymer Chemistry)

RSC Publishing announces new partnership for South Africa and Botswana

RSC Publishing is pleased to announce Worldwide Information Services (WWIS) as their exclusive representatives in South Africa and Botswana for high impact scientific research content.

RSC Publishing is the award-winning publishing division of the Royal Society of Chemistry and provides a broad range of resources for the scientific community including books/eBooks, databases, journals and magazines. In recent years, RSC Publishing has seen a significant increase in international content submissions and subscriptions.

Stephen Hawthorne, RSC Sales Director says, “Working with WWIS gives us the opportunity to work more closely with our customers in South Africa and Botswana and offer them a more valued customer service. More Accepted Manuscripts for RSC journals

Our Accepted Manuscript* service means your research is available, in citable form, even more rapidly. And now eight more titles are joining the growing number of RSC journals** to offer them.

From today, December 8th, any authors submitting to Analyst, Analytical Methods, CrystEngComm, Dalton, JAAS, Metallomics, Molecular BioSystems or RSC Advances will be given the option of publishing their research as an Accepted Manuscript.

Plus, the recently announced Toxicology Research opens for submissions today with this service.

New friends, recycling and poisonous socks: Fall MRS in Boston

A unusually warm and sunny Boston welcomed delegates to the 2011 MRS Fall Meeting last week.

And just like the city, where the old blends with the new and exciting, old friends and new were among the 5,000+ delegates.

Of those who visited the Exhibition Hall, few could have failed to notice the RSC Publishing booth (we did warn you about the bright pink). But many visitors were surprised to find out that the booth was made from recycled, and recyclable, cardboard – the first time we had tried this option for an exhibition. Did it work? Well, we believe it did, but here are some photos:

Visitors browsed the journals on display, with Journal of Materials Chemistry, Energy & Environmental Science and Nanoscale attracting the most attention. The RSC Nanoscience & Nanotechnology book series was also a big hit, along with the Case of the Poisonous Socks .

Our ‘everyone’s a winner’ feature proved very popular, particularly the T-shirts and the ‘staplers’ that don’t use staples. The winner of the top prize, selected at random from all scanned delegates, was Kyeong-ju Moon from Yonsei University in Korea.

Toxicology Research announced

The following news item about new journal Toxicology Research has just been released: Tox Res cover

Academic and industrial researchers in the field of toxicology will have a new option for the publication of their research in 2012, with the launch of Toxicology Research. The journal will be published in partnership with the British Toxicology Society and the Chinese Society of Toxicology.

Announcing the launch, James Milne, acting Managing Director of Publishing at the RSC, said: “We are delighted to support the toxicology research community with this new journal, published in partnership with both the BTS and CST. By providing authors with exceptional service through the submission and publication process, and providing free access to readers for the first two volumes, we anticipate Toxicology Research will quickly become preeminent in the field.

“The RSC prides itself in publishing journals of exceptional quality, relevance and timeliness, and Toxicology Research, with the editorial team involved, will certainly be in a good position to achieve this for the toxicology community”.

Toxicology Research will be a multidisciplinary journal covering both the fundamental and applied aspects of toxicology, including drug toxicity, food toxicity and their mechanisms, responses and risk/safety evaluation. The journal opens for submissions on 1st December, and the first issue will be published at the end of May 2012.

Professor Nigel J Gooderham, Editor-in-Chief, comments “It is a privilege and honour to be invited to work with the Royal Society of Chemistry on the launch of this new publishing venture. Current research in toxicology attempts to understand and explain biological response to noxious agents and draws upon the physical, biological and medical sciences. Therefore the scope of Toxicology Research will be inclusive rather than specialist with the emphasis on publishing the highest quality toxicological science, irrespective of discipline.”

Authors submitting to Toxicology Research will benefit from rapid peer review and publication, with no page charges. Authors have the option of publishing their research as an Accepted Manuscript*, and Open Access publication is also available as an option through RSC Open Science. Published research will have very high visibility: from launch until December 2013, all content will be freely available online for all readers via the website. Additionally, chemical structures and data contained in the journal will be integrated with ChemSpider, the RSC’s free chemical structure database. Authors with research that they would like to be considered for the first issues of Toxicology Research can submit online at www.rsc.org/toxicology.
