RSC and CCS announce new publishing partnership

A unique not-for-profit society partnership between the Chinese Chemical Society (CCS) and the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) will deliver a collection of journals that combine high quality content and fast publication with trusted values of society publishing.

The Frontiers journals aim to publish the very best research from China, Asia and the rest of the world to an international audience. This collaboration celebrates a new phase in scientific growth, and will provide researchers with unparalleled opportunities for global visibility and international collaboration.

An integral part of the development of each journal is collaboration with a top Chinese institute in the relevant field. These partner institutes will bring prestige and scientific knowledge to the enterprise. The first two journals and their partner institutes are:

Inorganic Chemistry Frontiers, College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering, Peking University (PKU)
Organic Chemistry Frontiers, Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry (SIOC)

Each Frontiers journal will be jointly owned by CCS, RSC and the relevant partner institute, with each owner bringing their expertise to the project.

The two journals will publish their first issues in 2014. Other journals from core chemistry areas will follow in the coming months and years. Ultimately the aim is for the Frontiers portfolio to become a leading international journal series for the chemical sciences community.

UKSG 2013 – We hope you enjoyed the show!

It was great to see so many Librarians and Information Specialists in Bournemouth.

Unfortunately only one of you can take home the Kindle Fire, but I hope all booth visitors enjoyed finding out more about Gold for Gold and what we are doing about Open Access, as well as seeing the UK launch of The Merck Index* Online.

Apps with real impact

Some apps have real impact, we’ve just sponsored two such apps.

Green Solvents and Lab Solvents are innovative apps for the iOS and Android platforms that list solvents and their scores versus various environmentally relevant properties. They are based on published data that had not been widely disseminated in conveniently available media. The apps are freely available and were developed by Dr. Alex M. Clark at Molecular Materials Informatics (MMI, Montreal, Canada) after an initial idea from Dr. Sean Ekins at Collaborations in Chemistry (CIC, Fuquay Varina, USA).

“These apps are first class examples of how green chemistry data can be delivered to a mobile device and complement other apps such as ChemSpider Mobile, which we have developed with Alex.” said Antony J. Williams, VP Strategic Development for the RSC. “We are honoured to support such efforts that raise awareness of green chemistry and educate the public and serve a need for scientists in the lab”.

“It is really wonderful validation of these apps that an organisation such as the RSC would sponsor Green Solvents and Lab Solvents and this will help to further raise their visibility to scientists globally” said Alex Clark, owner of Molecular Materials Informatics.

Royal Society of Chemistry to publish The Merck Index

The famous “bible” of chemistry, The Merck Index, is to join the highly acclaimed publishing portfolio of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

The Merck Index has been considered the standard chemistry reference work for generations of professionals and has sold over one million copies worldwide. From April 2013, the Royal Society of Chemistry will take over its publication and launch the 15^th edition.

Dr James Milne, RSC Executive Director, publishing, said: “The Merck Index is a quality product with a peerless pedigree but, being familiar to the scientific community worldwide, it is also emblematic of our organisation’s rapidly-expanding international presence and influence. We know The Merck Index will be a valuable addition to the products and services the RSC offers its customers. Now we are looking forward eagerly to developing The Merck Index for the digital future.”

The RSC already plans significant development of The Merck Index online – beginning with offering all buyers of the 15^th edition one year’s free access to a newly-developed online version. The RSC will continue to develop The Merck Index to provide a valuable, trusted and relevant resource for scientists and researchers.

Anyone for Open Access?

We have a great initiative, and we want to extend it to the rest of the world.

Launched in the Summer, our Gold for Gold pilot, enabling RSC Gold subscribers in the UK to publish RSC papers free-of-charge via Gold Open Access (OA), was a direct reaction to researchers being asked to publish OA, but without necessarily having the funding to do so.

Following the pilot’s popularity (at least 5 high-profile institutions have already taken advantage of Gold for Gold) we don’t want others to miss out. So, from now on, all RSC Gold subscribing institutions will be rewarded with voucher codes to publish OA articles at no cost.

This is an excellent opportunity for authors to increase the visibility of your quality research.

RSC Endorses KBART

Improving metadata assists discoverability.

As part of our commitment to support librarians, the Royal Society of Chemistry is delighted to endorse Phase I recommendations of the KBART (Knowledge Bases And Related Tools) Working Group, a joint NISO/UKSG initiative that is exploring data problems within the OpenURL supply chain.

KBART’s Phase I Recommended Practice, published in January 2010, contains practical recommendations for the timely exchange of accurate metadata between content providers and knowledge base developers.

RSC Publishing Catalogue 2013

There’s a lot of information about a lot of products out there, but not always enough time to view it all.

We feel that the 2013 RSC Publishing Catalogue is a vital document as it shows the depth and detail of what we do for the chemical sciences.

You can view the catalogue online, but, you may just want the highlights for 2013, so here they are:

Gold for Gold – First Open Access credit used by University of Hull

Recently we announced Gold for Gold, an innovative initiative rewarding UK RSC Gold customers with credits to publish a select number of papers in RSC journals via Open Science, the RSC’s Gold Open Access option. This ensures academics at RSC Gold subscribing institutions can further increase the visibility of their quality research.

We are now delighted to announce another first. This time for the University of Hull, who will be the opening beneficiary from this project.

CXCR4 chemokine receptor antagonists: nickel(II) complexes of configurationally restricted macrocycles (Steve Archibald et al, Dalton Transactions 2012 Vol:41, Issue 31) is the first article to be published as part of Gold for Gold and is available to all online.

RSC Publishing Price List 2013

The Royal Society of Chemistry would like to announce its 2013 Price List for journals, databases, magazines, eBooks and various collections.

Growth in content, higher impact factors, increased international influence and global visibility are at the cornerstone of everything we do.

And here’s just some of the proof.In the past year the number of articles in RSC journals has risen by 53% to more than 20,000, whilst 41% of our journals have achieved an Impact Factor of *5 and above (that’s more than Elsevier, Wiley and the ACS). We can boast authors from more than 90 countries worldwide, and our content has been downloaded by virtually every country on the planet.

Please see below for a summary of all the key changes for 2013, reflected in the new Price List.

New for 2013

All 2013 subscription renewals will be managed in-house by the RSC (this was previously managed by PCS)
There will be two new journals for 2013, Biomaterials Science and Toxicology Research – both available for free to all existing subscribers or registered users
There will be a significant increase in content for the following journals: CrystEngComm (48 issues for 2013, previously 24); Faraday Discussions (8 issues for 2013, previously 6); Polymer Chemistry (24 issues for 2013, previously 12); RSC Advances (48 issues for 2013, previously 24)
Our collections continue to represent great savings, and RSC Gold now includes Catalysis Science & Technology and RSC Advances. We are discontinuing the Package K Collection
We are offering more flexibility on our eBooks, with annual collections now available for all years from 2008-2013. We are discontinuing the Tutorial Chemistry Texts and Paperback Subject Collection
The Journal of Materials Chemistry brand will continue in the form of three journals, but will still be available as a full collection. Each journal will focus on an area of materials chemistry, divided by the nature of the intended applications of the materials studied: energy and sustainability; biology and medicine; and optical and electronic devices.
In response to feedback from the journal’s community, the Journal of Environmental Monitoring is changing its name to Environmental Science: Processes & Impacts (ESPI) to better reflect the content and the interests of the journal’s readers
All databases from 2013 will be online only (this applies to individual subscriptions and collections) and we are discontinuing the Chromatography Abstracts database
