The free RSC Publishing supplements Highlights in Chemical Science, Highlights in Chemical Biology and Highlights in Chemical Technology are moving.

From January 2011, all online news articles will be published on the Chemistry World news page. They will still be free for everyone to access. Plus, a selection of the content will be published in print as part of the Research section of Chemistry World. The original RSC Publishing research, on which the articles are based, will be free for a limited time.

Issue 12, 2010, will be the final issue of each of the three supplements. All published issues will be freely accessible from the RSC website.

Originally launched back in 2004 to provide a news service drawing together coverage from all RSC publications, the supplements have provided a vehicle for wider promotion of the most cutting-edge science published in RSC journals.

By moving to Chemistry World, articles will have the opportunity to reach even wider audiences.

Make sure you keep in touch with the latest RSC Publishing research news by following us on Twitter (ChemWorldSci, ChemWorldBio or ChemWorldTech) or by signing up for the Chemistry World daily, weekly or monthly alert.

Richard Savory and myself, from RSC Publishing attended the recent Pharma-Bio-Med conference in Seville, with approximately 120 delegates from leading pharmaceutical organisations.

During the conference, we highlighted key RSC Publishing resources including:

Setting up an account is simple – all we ask is that you provide some very basic information, including a valid email address for authentication.

ChemSpider was awarded the prestigious ALPSP Award for Publishing Innovation 2010 in a shortlist of four. This Award recognises a significantly innovative approach to any aspect of publication. The judges considered the originality and innovative qualities of each application, together with its utility, benefit to its community and long term development prospects.

The judges said: “ChemSpider has quickly become a highly valued and comprehensive community resource and has immense potential for future development.”

ChemSpider, which won the iExpo/KM Forum 2010 ‘Most Innovative Software’ award in June on the back of the Bio-IT Best Practice Award for Community Service in April, links together compound information across the web, providing free text and structure search access of millions of chemical structures. With an abundance of additional property information, tools to curate and use the data, and integration to a multitude of other online services, ChemSpider is the richest single source of structure-based chemistry information available online.

It might have rained almost continuously during the ACS Fall 2010 National Meeting in Boston, but it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the 14,000+ people there for the event. Of those who visited the Exhibition Hall, not many could have failed to notice the striking pink colour theme on the RSC booth.

Delegates browsed the books and journals on display, celebrated new journal Chemical Science and the other latest product launches, and learned how the RSC is committed to investing in the advancement of the chemical sciences. 30 journals, from across the chemical sciences, revealed opportunities for international scientists to read or publish the latest research. Visitors also learned about the benefits of registering for a personal account on the new e-platform, including: free access to new journals; the ability to save searches and create custom alerting; and much more. The competition to win an Apple iPad proved very popular: the winner, selected at random from the correct entries, was Professor Ekkehard Sinn from Western Michigan University, USA.

The correct answers revealed that:

• In 2009, RSC donated more than 53 million dollars to charitable activities and programmes to advance the chemical sciences
• 90% of RSC journals have an Impact Factor greater than 3
• 65 scientists will receive RSC Prizes and Awards in 2010
• RSC members come from more than 70 countries

Are you attending ACS conference in Boston in August? If so, BAGIM (Boston Area Group for Informatics and Modeling) would like to invite you to their meeting on August 25th which will be held at Barlow’s Restaurant in South Boston, (http://www.barlowsrestaurant.com/) with support from the Royal Society of Chemistry. This meeting will require reservations for dinner (6 PM: $20 pp and $10 for students), and the talk (ca. 7 PM) is open to the public. Maximum seating for dinner is 25 and seating capacity is 40.

Today saw the launch of the new RSC Publishing platform which provides access to nearly one million journal articles and book chapters through one simple, integrated search.

So how will the new platform benefit you?

• Save time by searching across all RSC-hosted journal, book and database content using one simple search
• Discover new research as the platform will automatically include related articles
• Find the right content fast through filtered searching which allows you faster access to relevant information by displaying  authors and RSC publications that have published related work
• Share & recommend research with tools such as Facebook, Twitter and Google
• Register and create a personalised account which allows you to store searches and receive search results as alerts

Project Manager and Electronic Publisher Graham McCann explains the processes and project priorities: “We created the new platform in consultation with the international scientific and librarian community by running a beta version alongside the existing RSC Publishing website. Everybody had the chance to actively contribute by submitting their feedback and ideas.”

Here are some user comments we received during the beta testing:

“I really like the ability to do a search by specific month.  I also like the filters, in particular the possibility to specify a journal.”

“It looks pretty slick for accessing the eBooks. I especially like the variety of “Browse by” features (series, subject, year, new) and the related books & article links. The same author feature is fun since it lets you easily move between the author’s monograph and journal literature.”

“This is an excellent move. The interaction platform allows the viewer to have access to more information on a particular article and hence save time and it has fewer steps.”

“I really appreciate the Citation download link. Clean look to the site, non-cluttered. Excellent.”
