Global Energy Perspectives

This week Nathan S Lewis, professor of chemistry at Caltech and Editor-in-Chief of Energy and Environmental Science, will be in London to give a special lecture as part of an international event to mark the launch of a new report from the RSC Science Team on solar fuels and artificial photosynthesis.

Hosted at the Chemistry Centre, Burlington House, the event will bring together leading international scientists, policymakers and business-people. In his lecture, Professor Lewis will describe and evaluate the technical, political and economic challenges involved with widespread adoption of renewable energy technologies. Join this unique Chemistry World Webinar, which is being streamed live on Thursday 17 May at 17:25 BST, 1225 EDT, 0925 PST. Read more and register online now.

Plus, find out more about the solar fuels and artificial photosynthesis report: download the full report and infographics now.

RSC Publishing at the Spring ACS

RSC Publishing exhibition boothAt the Spring ACS in San Diego last month the RSC Booth was once again hard to miss in the Exhibition Hall. As delegates flocked to find out how the RSC has been working to represent the chemical science community, there was plenty to keep everyone occupied.

With more than 30 journal titles on display, including new titles Toxicology Research and Biomaterials Science, the RSC portfolio encompasses a broad subject footprint. Our new look journal brochures, designed to showcase content, outline key information about the journal and – at a slimline 4 pages – be easy to transport, were available for delegates to peruse and take away. To aid users in finding the titles most closely associated with their areas of research, our journals, books and key products are also now classified into 13 subject portfolios.

ChemSpider Coffee & Cookies EventVisitors to the stand were able to browse our latest book titles and take advantage of a 30 percent show discount. Plus our competition to win an Amazon kindle proved popular. The lucky winner, selected at random, was a scientist based at the University of Portland, Oregon, USA.

There were three lucky winners in our daily e-membership competition, who each walked away with an iPod shuffle. As an e-member of the RSC, for just £20 a year, you can engage with an online community of over 20,000 scientists worldwide and keep current with 12 digital editions of Chemistry World, the best way to keep up to date with the world of chemistry.

The ChemSpider Coffee and Cookie event on Tuesday morning was well attended, with around 100 delegates taking the opportunity to find out more about the free chemical database. Several people stayed to receive one-to-one demonstrations of the benefits of ChemSpider, which provides fast text and structure search access to over 26 million structures from hundreds of data sources.

Another activity-filled meeting! We look forward to seeing you in Philadelphia in August.

New journal: Biomaterials Science

Front cover of Biomaterials ScienceAre you looking for a biomaterials journal which bridges materials science, biology, chemistry and physics? One which publishes high impact science?

A journal which through free access will ensure your work has maximum visibility?

Academic and industrial researchers in the field of biomaterials have a new option for the publication of their research in 2012, with the launch of our latest journal Biomaterials Science. The journal is a collaborative venture between RSC Publishing and the Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences, Kyoto University, Japan. Biomaterials Science will be a multidisciplinary journal covering the fundamental science of biomaterials and their biomedical applications.

The journal will open for submissions from March 2012, advance articles will be available from August 2012 and the first issue will be issue 1, 2013.

Published research will have very high visibility – from launch until December 2014, all content will be freely available online for all readers via the website.

Norio Nakatsuji, Professor and Director at WPI Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences, Kyoto University has been appointed Co-Editor-in-Chief of the new journal. He said:

“It is my great honour and pleasure to work with the Royal Society of Chemistry on the launch of this new cross-disciplinary journal integrating materials science with the cellular and biomedical sciences. Our institute – Kyoto University’s WPI Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences (iCeMS) aims to fuse these fields, focusing on stem cells and mesoscopic investigations of living systems and functional materials. The launch of this new journal is therefore an important event for our institute, as with it we seek to present a global platform for fundamental research as well as varied applications of this rapidly expanding field created at the crossing point of biology, chemistry, and physics.”

Professor Phillip Messersmith from Northwestern University, USA, also Co-Editor-in-Chief, added: “It is an exhilarating time for the biomaterials research community, as it is enjoying rapid growth, making exciting fundamental discoveries, and driving the development of novel life-saving and life-enhancing therapeutic materials and devices. I look forward to helping shape Biomaterials Science into one of leading journals in the field.”

Authors with research that they would like to be considered for the first issues of Biomaterials Science can submit online from March 2012 www.rsc.org/biomaterialsscience

More Accepted Manuscripts for RSC journals

Our Accepted Manuscript* service means your research is available, in citable form, even more rapidly. And now eight more titles are joining the growing number of RSC journals** to offer them.

From today, December 8th, any authors submitting to Analyst, Analytical Methods, CrystEngComm, Dalton, JAAS, Metallomics, Molecular BioSystems or RSC Advances will be given the option of publishing their research as an Accepted Manuscript.

Plus, the recently announced Toxicology Research opens for submissions today with this service.

Our dedicated webpage has answers to all the most frequently asked questions – and you can bookmark the RSC Publishing blog to keep up-to-date with the latest news on Accepted Manuscripts and more.

* * * * *

*An Accepted Manuscript is an unedited and unformatted version of an article that is published shortly after acceptance. It is available as a downloadable pdf file. It is then replaced by the fully edited and formatted Advance Article.

**Accepted Manuscripts are already published by Catalysis Science & Technology, ChemComm, Chemical Science, Energy & Environmental Science, Integrative Biology, Journal of Environmental Monitoring, Lab on a Chip, MedChemComm, Nanoscale, Organic & Biomolecular Chemistry and PCCP.

Revised Impact Factor figures

Revised Impact Factor figures for Nanoscale (4.109) and Analytical Methods (1.036) have now been released by Thomson Reuters, who provided us with the statement below. All other RSC journal Impact Factors remain the same.

“The journals NANOSCALE and ANALYTICAL METHODS were accepted for inclusion in the Thomson Reuters Citation Indexes in the year 2010. Indexing of the titles was made retroactive to 2009 in order to include the content of Volume 1, 2009 for each title so that our coverage would span all content published by the journal from its launch, as well as to issue a Journal Impact Factor as quickly as possible. This additional back year of coverage resulted in the under-counting of citable items during JCR production equivalent to the content of one 2009 issue for each journal. This anomaly prevented the appearance of the journals in the first release of the JCR. Our remedy was to by-pass the JCR output and use raw data to create a Journal Impact Factor for our Notices file. The Journal Impact Factor, however, was missing some of the year 2009 content, resulting in a significant over-estimation of the final value. We regret this error and appreciate the cooperation of the Royal Society of Chemistry in noting the corrected data.”

Please disregard the figures for Nanoscale and Analytical Methods that were released in news published prior to July 15th 2011.

The revised list of all RSC Journal Impact Factors is:
