Photo of Professor Eva Hemmer.We are delighted to welcome Professor Eva Hemmer, University of Ottawa, Canada, as a new Associate Editor working across Nanoscale and Nanoscale Advances.

Eva Hemmer is an Associate Professor of Materials Chemistry at the University of Ottawa. She received her PhD (2008) in materials science from Saarland University, Germany. After a postdoctoral experience at Tokyo University of Science, Japan, with Prof. K. Soga (2009-2012), she moved to Canada to become a joint Alexander von Humboldt postdoctoral fellow with Profs. F. Vetrone and F. Légaré at INRS-EMT, Montreal (2012-2015).

In 2016, Eva joined the University of Ottawa, where her research team focused on new designs of upconverting and near-infrared-emitting rare-earth-based nanoparticles for bioimaging, optoelectronic, and optomagnetic applications.

“I have been reviewing research papers for quite some time now, including for the Nanoscale family, and always enjoyed it as a great opportunity to get to see brand new research in materials chemistry that is also relevant to my own work on optical nanomaterials. I am very excited to take on this new role as member of the editorial board, looking forward to deepening and broadening this experience when engaging with authors, reviewers, and the editorial team.” – Professor Eva Hemmer

Professor Yue Zhang joins as Editor-in-Chief

Welcome to Nanoscale and Nanoscale Advances!

We are delighted to welcome Professor Yue Zhang, University of Science and Technology Beijing, China, as our new Editor-in-Chief working across Nanoscale and Nanoscale Advances, joining Professor Dirk Guldi as co-Editor-in-Chief for the journals.

Prof. Yue Zhang obtained his PhD in Metal Physics from the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) in 1993. He was elected as the academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in 2019 and 2022 respectively and currently serves as the director of State Key State Key Laboratory for Advanced Metals and Materials, dean of the Academy for Advanced Interdisciplinary Science and Technology at USTB.

Prof. Zhang has devoted his research to the synthesis, characterization, functionalization and advanced applications of semiconductor nanomaterials in energy and information, including two-dimensional electronic devices, energy conversion and storage devices, and information sensing systems.

Professor Chunli Bai becomes Honorary Editor-in-Chief

We are also delighted to announce that Professor Chunli Bai, Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China, has been appointed as Honorary Editor-in-Chief. Professor Bai was one of the inaugural Editors-in-Chief of both Nanoscale and Nanoscale Advances, working with the Royal Society of Chemistry for the past 14 years. We would like to thank him for his ongoing support of the journals and nanoscience community and look forward to working with him in this new role.

Professor Chunli Bai received his MS and PhD degrees from the CAS Institute of Chemistry in 1981 and 1985, respectively. From 1985-1987 he was at Caltech, USA, conducting research in the field of physical chemistry as a post-doctorate associate and visiting scholar. Returning home in 1987, Chunli continued his research at CAS Institute of Chemistry. From 1991 to 1992, he was a visiting professor at Tohoku University in Japan.

His research covers the structure and properties of polymer catalysts, X-ray crystallography of organic compounds, molecular mechanics and EXAFS research on electro-conducting polymers, scanning tunnelling microscopy, and molecular nanotechnology.

Professor Gianaurelio (Giovanni) Cuniberti joins the Associate Editor team

Professor Gianaurelio (Giovanni) Cuniberti

We are delighted to welcome Professor Gianaurelio (Giovanni) Cuniberti, TU Dresden, Germany, as a new Associate Editor working across Nanoscale and Nanoscale Advances.

Gianaurelio Cuniberti has been the Chair of Materials Science and Nanotechnology at TU Dresden since 2007 and is the founding director of the Dresden Center for Intelligent Materials. He is an Honorary Professor at the Division of IT Convergence Engineering of POSTECH and the Pohang University of Science and Technology, is Adjunct Professor for the Department of Chemistry at the University of Alabama, and a Guest Professor at SJTU. In 2018 he became a faculty member of the transcampus between TU Dresden and King’s College London.

His research interests include a wide range of areas from quantum dots, nanowires and nanotubes to biosystems, molecular and organic electronics, addressing transport phenomena, structural stability and the theory and modelling of electronic and structural properties of bottom-up nanoscale materials.

Professor Christian Klinke

We are delighted to welcome Professor Christian Klinke, University of Rostock, Germany and Swansea University, UK, as a new Associate Editor working across Nanoscale and Nanoscale Advances.

Christian Klinke studied physics at the University of Würzburg and the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, where he also obtained his diploma degree. In 2017 he joined the Chemistry Department of Swansea University, UK, as an associate professor and since 2019 he has also held a position of full professor at the University of Rostock, Germany.

His research concerns the colloidal synthesis of nanomaterials and the optoelectronic characterization of these materials.

Professor Janet Macdonald joins the Associate Editor team

Professor Janet Macdonald

We are delighted to welcome Professor Janet Macdonald, Vanderbilt University, USA, as a new Associate Editor working across Nanoscale and Nanoscale Advances.

Janet Macdonald received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from McGill University, followed by a PhD from the University of Alberta in 2008. She joined the chemistry faculty at Vanderbilt University in 2011, where she is an associate professor of chemistry and a member of the Vanderbilt Institute for Nanoscale Science and Engineering.

Her research focuses on the phase selective synthesis of nanocrystalline materials, especially preparing non-natural phases of metal chalcogenides. Her group also studies fundamental charge transfer phenomena from semiconductor nanocrystals for solar-to-fuel technologies and photovoltaics, including specialized ligand synthesis to aid charge transfer.

Professor Teresa Pellegrino

We are delighted to welcome Professor Teresa Pellegrino, Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Italy, as a new Associate Editor working across Nanoscale and Nanoscale Advances.

Teresa Pellegrino received her Master’s in Chemistry in 2000 and her PhD in Chemical Synthesis and Applied Enzymatic Chemistry in 2005 from the University of Bari, Italy. In 2014 she became a tenured Team Leader of the Nanomaterials for Biomedical Applications Group at the Italian Institute of Technology, Genoa, Italy.

Her current research interests focus on the synthesis of inorganic nanocrystals with an emphasis on magnetic materials and organic-inorganic nanostructured materials for drug delivery, magnetic hyperthermia, photo-thermal treatment and radiotherapy.

Professor Zhiqun Lin

We are delighted to welcome Professor Zhiqun Lin, Georgia Institute of Technology, USA, as a new Associate Editor working across Nanoscale and Nanoscale Advances.

Zhiqun Lin received his Ph.D in Polymer Science and Engineering from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 2002. He is currently a Professor in the School of Materials Science and Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

His research interests include solar cells, photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, batteries, quantum dots (rods), multifunctional nanocrystals, Janus nanostructures, conjugated polymers, semiconductor organic-inorganic nanocomposites, block copolymers, polymer blends, hierarchical structure formation and assembly, and surface and interfacial properties.

Professor Jinlan Wang joins the Associate Editor team

Welcome to Nanoscale and Nanoscale Advances!

 

Professor Jinlan Wang

We are delighted to welcome Professor Jinlan Wang, Southeast University, China, as a new Associate Editor working across Nanoscale and Nanoscale Advances.

Jinlan Wang received her Ph.D from Nanjing University, China, in 2002. She subsequently spent three years at Argonne National Laboratory, USA, before joining Southeast University in China in 2006 as a full Professor. She has since developed the computational physics and chemistry group there and is currently a Chief Professor of Southeast University.

Her current research mainly focuses on computational studies and design of two-dimensional materials and clean energy materials, using techniques ranging from machine learning to classical molecular dynamics or different level first-principles methods.

Dr Dong Qin joins the Associate Editor team

We are delighted to welcome Dr Dong Qin, Georgia Institute of Technology, USA, as a new Associate Editor working across Nanoscale and Nanoscale Advances.

 

 

 

 

What attracted you to pursue a career in nanoscience and how did you get to where you are now?

After my PhD study on the fundamental work of gas phase spectroscopy, I was very fortunate to have an opportunity to work on soft lithography as a postdoctoral fellow with Professor George M. Whitesides at Harvard University back in 1997. I am in debt to George who brought me to this fascinating world of nanoscale science where I enjoyed the research in the field of nanostructures and nanomaterials with a solid training as a physical chemist. I had been doing independent work in building the research infrastructure for nanoscale science and engineering from 1997-2011, during which I witness the progress of the field. When I finally returned back to academia in 2012, I decided to start my own research in the field of nanoscale nanomaterials, metal nanocrystals, with my keen focus on the optical properties for the development of in situ methodology to characterize the catalytically significant interface by fingerprinting spectroscopy. It has been a rewarding journey at Georgia Tech as I renowned my passion in both nanoscale science and spectroscopy.

 

What is the most exciting research paper that you have read recently?

Single atom catalysis! Questions remain on the ability to probe single atom and we are part of the efforts to address this challenge at the moment.

 

What is your biggest passion outside of science?

Free-lance writing!

 

What career would you have chosen if you had not taken this career path?

 An educator – I have enormous passion in teaching! Students in my classes will not only learn knowledge but also my positive attitude toward life in broad.

 

Why should young people study chemistry?

Chemistry introduces the smallest building blocks, atoms, which are essential in building structure-property relationship of materials in our daily life!

Professor Manzhou Zhu joins the Associate Editor team

We are delighted to welcome Professor Manzhou Zhu, Anhui University, China, as a new Associate Editor working across Nanoscale and Nanoscale Advances.

 

 

 

 

 

What attracted you to pursue a career in nanoscience and how did you get to where you are now?

I had been engaged in natural product chemistry and organic chemistry before I conducted postdoctoral research in Prof. Rongchao Jin’s group at Carnegie Mellon University. Since then, my research has been focused on metal nanoclusters, and I am always deeply attracted by the intriguing findings and unexplored areas in the nanocluster science. I am fascinated by how materials can behave so differently at the nanoscale.  Such an interest motivates me to fill myself with nanoscience arts, and I really enjoy it.

 

Why did you choose to specialize in your specific research field?

My research focusses on metal nanoclusters. Metal nanoclusters occupy the gap between discrete atoms and plasmonic nanomaterials, and are an emerging class of atomically precise nanomaterials. And the precise nature of nanocluster structures enables the elucidation of their structure-property relationships, which is essential if cluster-based nanomaterials with enhanced performances are to be rationally designed. I’m extremely interested in the precise nature of nanoclusters that we can see and control at the atomic level.

 

What do you see as the biggest challenges facing researchers who work in your field?

For the nanocluster science, in my opinion, we have gradually known about nanoclusters at the atomic level and controlled them in dictated structures and properties in the past few decades Therefore, the biggest challenges ahead of researchers are the applications of nanoclusters or nanocluster-based nanomaterials.

 

What is your biggest passion outside of science?

My biggest passion outside of science is cooking. Cooking gives me a chance to be creative outside of lab. I love to create my own recipes. It is interesting to try out different combinations of ingredients. I also feel fulfilled when I make something delicious that my family love to eat.

 

What career would you have chosen if you had not taken this career path?

Maybe I would choose to be a builder if I had not taken my current career. I grew up in the countryside and many people there went to the city to seek for jobs. The most common job for people like us from the countryside is to be a builder. If I had not gone to college, I would become a builder like my peers. Now, instead of building houses out of bricks I am building new materials out of atoms and molecules. So I always regard myself as a nano-builder by considering that there are many parallels between the building construction and the nanocluster construction.

 

What do you see as the most important scientific achievement of the last decade?

The last decade has witnessed lots of exciting scientific breakthroughs, such as gene editing, cell reprogramming, metamaterial development, nano-technology development, and so on. To me, the significantly developed nano-technologies that help us to directly “see” the nanoscience are the most exciting, such as cryo-electron microscopy (the 2017 Nobel Prize in Chemistry) and lattice light-sheet microscope (seeing the cells at high spatiotemporal resolution; e.g., Science, 2014, 1257998).

 

Why should young people study chemistry?

Everything that happens around us is associated with chemistry. Chemistry is one of the most important science and is closely associated with our life. Studying chemistry means learning how to find, understand, and solve problems in our life. Chemistry also teaches us to discover the essence of materials, and thus comprehend their existence and further control them. By studying chemistry, young people can better understand the world, and have the chance to unravel these mysteries and make a difference to the world.
