First Chinese Atomic Spectroscopy Committee Elected

(Na Na) The first Atomic Spectroscopy Committee of China was elected at the recent 2010 APWC held in ChengDu, China. More than 50 scientists from domestic and international participated in this event.  Secretary general Changkuan Liu announced the establishment of Atomic Spectroscopy Committee of China. Prof. Benli Huang and Prof. Yukui Zhang, Academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), enthusiastically delivered the congratulation speeches.

The committee includes 34 scientists: Prof. Benli Huang (Academician of CAS, Xiamen University), Prof. Yukui Zhang (Academician of CAS, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics), and Prof. Zhifang Chai (Academician of CAS, Institute of High Energy Physics) as the advisory members; Chairman, Prof. Guibin Jiang (Academician of CAS, Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences); Vice Chairmen, Prof. Bin Hu (Wuhan University), Prof. Xiandeng Hou (Sichuan University), Prof. Jianhua Wang (Northeastern University), Prof. Qiuquan Wang (Xiamen University), Prof. Xiuping Yan (Nankai University), Prof. Pengyuan Yang (Fudan University), and Prof. Xinrong Zhang (Tsinghua University).

During the conference, Prof. Guibin Jiang presented a report “Analytical Atomic Spectrometry in China – Past, Present and Future”. Prof. Zhifang Chai, Prof. Pengyuan Yang, Prof. Xiuping Yan and Prof. Xiandeng Hou were invited to give 20 min lectures on selected topics. These reports fostered active discussion, and they believed the future of atomic spectrometry in China will be promising.

Nobel Laureate Professor John Fenn Has Passed Away at 93

Professor John Fenn

Professor John Fenn passed away on Friday December 10 at the age of 93. Professor Fenn received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2002 for his work in electrospray ionization, and he remained a mainstay at scientific conferences and an active researcher well into his 90’s.  Professor Fenn was also an active mentor and friend to younger scientists and went out of his way to encourage students in their scientific pursuits-particularly in teaching pursuits.  You can view Professor Fenn’s Nobel Address at http://nobelprize.org/mediaplayer/index.php?id=904 and you might also like this interview with Professor Fenn http://nobelprize.org/mediaplayer/index.php?id=517&view=1 .  He was a great scientist and ambassador, he will be missed.
