International Symposium on Laser Spectroscopy and Spectral Analysis

The ‘‘International Symposium on Laser Spectroscopy and Spectral Analysis”(ISLSSA)has been held on December 20th-21st 2014 at  Pengzhou, Chengdu, China. ISLSSA was hosted by China Instrument and Control Society and jointly organized by Sichuan University and Pengzhou Municipal Government. There were over 140 delegates joining this conference, who come from America, Spain, Korea, France and China, amounting to more than 30 institutions.

The opening ceremony was hosted by Professor Yixiang Duan, the director of Research Center of Analytical Instrumentation, Sichuan University, China. The secretary general of China Instrument and Control Society, Mr. Xianfeng Zhu; the chairman of China Instrument and Control Society, Near Infrared Spectroscopy Division, Mr. Hongfu Yuan; and the Dean of college of Life Science, Sichuan University, Prof. Zhixiong Xiao were invited as special guests and made their opening speeches.

This international conference was carried out around the topics of laser atomic and molecular spectral analysis technologies, the combination of different laser based technologies, and the hardware designing technology for laser based instrumental systems. Many excellent reports were presented by national and international experts.

The two-day conference included invited talks, academic posters and equipment exhibitions. This international conference was designed to provide a unique platform for exchanging and discussing the advanced technologies in laser spectroscopy, thus jointly promoting the development and progress of laser spectroscopy techniques. Quantitative analysis of fluorite ores, online monitoring for industrial emissions, resources exploration and applications in atmospheric chemistry with laser spectroscopy were discussed in the conference. Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technology for in-situ and remote analysis of molten metals, for quantitative analysis of viscous liquids, as well as data processing methods with chemometrics for LIBS were also presented in this conference. The conference had a very good academic atmosphere, and delegates took active part in idea exchanges and discussions. With the joint efforts of all participants, this international conference was considerably successful.

The First National Conference on Mass Spectrometry of Chinese Chemical Society Held in Beijing

The First National Conference on Mass Spectrometry of Chinese Chemical Societywas held on April25-27, 2014 in Beijing. This conference was organized by Mass Spectrometry Division of Chinese Chemical Society, and Department of Chemistry /Analysis Center of Tsinghua University. The symposium was initiated by Prof. Jin-Ming Lin from Tsinghua University and chaired by Prof. Hongyuan Chen from Nanjing University. Prof. Qiankun Zhuang from National Nature Science Foundation of China (NSFC) gave the opening speech before the plenary lectures. More than 400 conventioneers including scientists, experts and students of mass spectrometry from 79 academic institutions and instrument manufacturers attended the conference.

Prof. Jin-Ming Lin of Tsinghua University chaired the Open Ceremony

During this symposium, 15 plenary lecturers, 30 invited speakers and 30 contributed speakers presented their latest academic achievements in mass spectrometry related to environmental and food safety, pharmaceutical analysis, -omics, bio-analysis, and instrumentation developments. Eight excellent posters were selected for awards by a prize-jury group. The meeting has provided a great opportunity for academic communications in the hope of promoting the development of mass spectrometry in China.

2nd International Glow Discharge Spectroscopy Symposium (IGDSS)

The 2nd international GD symposium was held recently at the Czech Technical University in Prague from 7-9 April.  The Organizing Committee (lead by Chairman Peter Robinson) did an excellent job of putting together a program examining various aspects of all glow discharge spectroscopies across a wide range of applications.  Highlights included the use of GDs for exotic bulk materials analysis, in thin film depth profiling, their use in ultra-high resolution electron spectroscopies, for the direct analysis of liquids, as a competitive technique to Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry, and even used in electron-beam welding applications. Approximately 100 attended the conference from 20 different countries, leading to a lively and vibrant discussion.

The IGDSS host the Payling Prize in Glow Discharge Spectroscopy. This prestigious prize is awarded to the young scientist who gives the best presentation during a meeting of the European Working Group for Glow Discharge. On this occasion, the Awardee was Dr. Sohail Mushtaq, a postdoctoral research fellow at LondonMet, for his work “Effect of small quantities of oxygen in a Neon GD”.

Congratulations, Sohail!

You can submit to the upcoming themed issue following this conference and dedicated to Glow Discharge Spectroscopy by contacting us.

13th Rio Symposium on Atomic Spectrometry

The 13th Rio Symposium on Atomic Spectrometry will be held at Mérida, Yucatán (Mexico) 19-24 October 2014, organized by Dr. Liliana Saldívar y Osorio, Dr. Maria Goreti R. Vale and Dr. Patricia Smichowski.

The Rio Symposium was created in the late 1980s with the idea to offer, particularly for the younger generation, an international conference in Latin America, inviting internationally renowned scientists to transfer their knowledge. This is still the basic idea of the RSAS, which also distinguishes it from other conferences.

Registration and Abstract submission will open in March 2014. More information will be published as available.
