SR2A-2014 is open to all interested professionals, including archaeologists, conservation scientists, conservators, geochemists and material scientists, researchers with experience utilising large-scale research facilities and other analytical techniques, curators, cultural heritage managers, art historians, students, potential users of synchrotrons, etc. The Louvre venue is intended to provide an unprecedented opportunity for professionals from Europe and worldwide to meet and share their expertise and experience.

Frank Vanhaecke

Frank Vanhaecke is a professor of analytical chemistry at Ghent University in Belgium. His research encompasses the determination, speciation and isotopic analysis of trace elements using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). He took some time out from the 2013 Goldschmidt conference to talk to Rebecca Brodie.

What inspired you to become a chemist in the first place?

That’s an easy question. When I was in secondary school I knew that I wanted to do something in science. At first I had my mind set on biology. Questions like ‘how do animals and plants defend themselves?’ and ‘why do trees lose their leaves in autumn?’ intrigued me. But I quickly gave up on this idea when I had to do my first dissection – that was the end of biology for me.

Geochemistry in JAAS- new themed issue open for submissions

Inspired by the recent Goldschmidt conference in Florence, we are pleased to announce a themed issue on “Geological applications of laser ablation” in JAAS. This themed issue is to cover a mixture of both fundamental advances and exciting new applications.

1st Workshop on Biomedical Applications of Geochemistry

We are pleased to announce the first Workshop on Biomedical Applications of Geochemistry that will be held at Gargonza, Tuscany (http://www.gargonza.it/index.html) after the Florence Goldschmidt conference from the 30th Aug (evening) to the 1st Sept (afternoon).

This workshop will be the opportunity to present new results on the growing field of the use of natural stable isotope fractionation in biomedicine, both for understanding homeostasis in normal and pathological conditions and as potential new biomarkers. This will be also the chance for scientists coming from isotopic mass spectrometry (IRMS and MC-ICPMS) and from biomedicine to meet for setting up an authentic interdisciplinary community devoted to the development of stable isotopes in health sciences.

Committed speakers for this event are Francis Albarède (ENS Lyon), Ariel Anbar (Arizona State University), Anton Eisenhauer (Geomar), Frank Vanhaecke (Ghent University), Thomas Walczyk (National University of Singapore).
