Dalton Discussion 12: Catalytic C-H and C-X Bond Activation

The stunning city of Durham provided a picturesque setting for the 12th Dalton Discussion meeting (DD12) highlighting the highly topical field of Catalytic C-H and C-X Bond Activation. The meeting was a joint venture between the RSC’s Dalton and Organic Divisions. The organising committee for the discussion meeting, consisting of Phil Dyer, Ian Fairlamb, Sue Gibson (Organic Division), Peter Scott (Dalton Division) and chaired by Todd Marder, must be congratulated for a fantastic meeting rife with lively debate and high quality chemistry.

The conference brought together the organic, organometallic, and inorganic (coordination chemistry) communities from academia and industry to consider the current state of the art, the development and future of late metal-catalysed cross-coupling strategies of C-X and C-H bonds. The conference dinner took place in the unique surroundings of Durham Castle and the discussion continued long into the night!

Obviously, discussion was a central element to this meeting both at the poster session and in the sessions themselves. Congratulations to Anne Germeroth (University of Edinburgh) for winning the Dalton Transactions Poster Prize with an excellent poster entitled ‘Reversible reactions across the M-C bond of lanthanide NHC complexes to form new N-E and C-E bonds’.

Congratulations also to the other poster prize winners at the meeting: Toritse Bob-Egbe (Imperial College London) who won the inaugural Catalysis Science & Technology Poster Prize, Julien A. Panetier (Heriot-Watt University) and Amanda Jarvis (University of York).

Look out for the DD12 themed issue which will be published as issue 43 Dalton Transactions at the end of October 2010. More information about the meeting itself can be found at the RSC Events webpage.

Meet the team at Dalton Discussion 12

Ruth Doherty, Dalton Transactions Deputy Editor

Dalton Transactions  is proud to attending and publishing an associated Themed Issue with Dalton Discussion 12: Catalytic C-H and C-X Bond Activation (DD12), taking place at Durham University from 13th to the 15th of September 2010.

We are also delighted to be able to sponsor a Dalton Transactions poster prize to be awarded at the meeting.  There will also be a poster prize sponsored by our new journal, Catalysis Science & Technology .

DD12 is being jointly organised by the RSC Dalton and Organic Divisions and will bring together the organic, organometallic, and inorganic (coordination chemistry) communities from academia and industry to discuss the current state of the art, the development and future of late metal-catalysed cross-coupling strategies of C-X and C-H bonds.

I will be attending DD12 so please do have a chat with me if you are also there, I’d love to hear from you.

If you will be attending DD12 let me know by email to dohertyr@rsc.org or by leaving a comment below.

Inorganic Biochemistry Discussion Group 2010 Meeting

Royal Society of Chemistry: Inorganic Biochemistry Discussion Group 2010 Meeting – Metal Homeostasis
10 and 11 September 2010 University of Newcastle, UK
Deadline for registration is 6th August 2010

The annual RSC IBDG meeting will be on the subject of metal homeostasis and feature talks from speakers including Dennis Winge (University of Utah), Claudia Blindauer (University of Warwick) and Tom O’Halloran (Northwestern University).

Dalton Transactions is proud to be supporting the meeting and sponsoring a poster prize.

It is estimated that more than one third of all proteins require a metal ion for structure or function. Interest has grown in understanding how the correct metal is acquired by the correct protein. Given that many essential metals can be toxic if not managed correctly within a cell, mechanisms have evolved to ensure the safe delivery of metals to target proteins. This meeting will focus on the current understanding of the sequestering, sensing, chaperoning and storing of metals in biological systems.
