Poster prize at the first University of California Symposium for Chemical Sciences

We are delighted to announce that the University of California Symposium for Chemical Sciences Dalton Transactions poster prize was awarded to Allie Yingyao Chen, during the event held from 21-23 March 2016, at the, UCLA Lake Arrowhead conference centre, USA. This was the first symposium of its kind and brought graduate students and postdoctoral researchers from across the University of California together, to network and start up new collaborations.

Poster prize winner, Allie, is a second year graduate student working on the synthesis of small molecule inhibitors for metalloproteins. This work is carried out under the guidance of Professor Seth Cohen at the University of California, San Diego, USA. Please join us in congratulating Allie on this achievement!

Report from the Northern Postdoctoral Researchers Meeting

The Northern Postdoctoral researchers meeting took place on May 28^that the School of Chemistry and Zochonis Building, The University of Manchester. This was the fourth of a series of events organised by the Chemistry Postdoctoral Society for the academic year 2014/15, included in the proposal funded by the Dalton Division Committee through the Small Grants for Scientific Activities scheme.

The purpose of the meeting was to gather young scientists from the Northern and North-West region, giving the chance to showcase their research and offering also a great networking opportunity. The event was free to attend and saw the participation of around 70 attendants between Postdocs and PhDs coming from the University of Manchester, University of Liverpool, University of Huddersfield, University of Sheffield, University of Hull, University of York, and University of Leeds.

Postdoctoral researchers selected from Northern institutions (Manchester, Huddersfield, Hull, Leeds and Liverpool) offered research talks which spread across a wide range of topics in chemistry. The quality of the talks and of the research presented was outstanding, leading also to a great interaction between the audience and the speakers.

After the coffee break, the meeting was moved to the foyer of the School of Chemistry were the poster session took place, featuring over 30 contribution from Postdocs and PhD from various Northern institutions. At the end of the poster session, two prizes were awarded, sponsored by Dalton Transactions. The winner of the prize for the best postgraduate poster went to Luke Wilkinson (University of Sheffield), whilst the prize for the best poster from a postdoctoral researcher was awarded to Kevin Vincent (University of Huddersfield).

In general, we received very enthusiastic feedback about the meeting. In particular, visiting postdoctoral researchers had high praises for the work of the Postdoctoral Society and offered to organise another event analogous to this in one year’s time.

The meeting was kindly supported by the RSC Dalton Division and the School of Chemistry (UoM). Furthermore the Postdoctoral Society obtained additional support from Fluorochem, Sigma-Aldrich and TCI. Dalton Transactions was acknowledged during the opening and closing remarks of the conference; additionally the Dalton Transactions logo was included in the conference material.

Lectureship awards & Poster prizes at the 5th Asian Conference on Coordination Chemistry

Poster prize winners with Dalton Transactions Editor, Andrew Shore

Many congratulations to the Dalton Transactions Lectureship and Poster prize winners who were awarded at the 5^thAsian Conference on Coordination Chemistry (ACCC5) which took from the 12^th– 16^thJuly 2015 in Hong Kong.

Recipients of the Lectureship were: John Nitzchke, David Parker and Philip Mountford who is currently the Editorial Board Chair for Dalton Transactions.

The conference is one of the largest regional conferences in Asia; focussing on the area of coordination chemistry and providing a forum for inorganic and coordination chemists to meet and discuss ideas on the most frontier research topics as well as an opportunity to present their most recent research findings.

Poster prize winners at the RSC Southern Dalton Meeting April 2015

Congratulations to the below poster prize winners who were awarded prizes during the RSC Southern Dalton Meeting April 2015 which took place in Falmer, Brighton from the 20^th– 21^stApril 2015.

The conference was a Regional meeting arranged by the Dalton Division at the Royal Society of Chemistry to discuss all aspects of inorganic chemistry. Invited speakers were Professors Polly Arnold, (University of Edinburgh) and Eric Meggers (Philipps-Universität Marburg, Germany).

A poster session was held for postgraduate students and the following were awarded poster prizes: James Lawson (Manchester), Christopher Wright (Oxford) and Irene Maluenda (Sussex).

The 13th Ferrocene Colloquium

Dalton Transactions was proud to sponsor The 13th Ferrocene Colloquium, which took place from 22–24 February 2015 in Leipzig, Germany.

More than 120 participants, from Germany and from abroad, came to Leipzig to hear impressive talks and to present their latest results in the field.

The Colloquium also featured a poster session, which formed an integral part of the meeting, fostering the informal exchange of latest developments in this field of chemistry.

Congratulations to the participants and meeting organisers for making the Colloquium a great success!

Workshop on Flexibility and Disorder in Metal–Organic Frameworks

The Workshop on Flexibility and Disorder in Metal–Organic Frameworks will take place in Paris, France, from 3-5 June 2015.

Organised by Anthony Cheetham (FRS), Alain Fuchs, Thomas Bennett, and François-Xavier Coudert, with funding from the European CECAM, as well as the French CNRS and Chimie ParisTech, this workshop will gather together distinguished speakers from a diverse range of disciplines to provide numerous viewpoints on topics including:

The Mechanical Behavior of MOFs
Amorphization and Nanostructures
Computational Approaches to Flexbility and Disorder
Defects and Disorder as Virtues

Dalton Transactions in Japan

Members of our Editorial Board recently awarded Dalton Transactions certificates to two attendees at conferences in Japan.

The XXVI International Conference on Organometallic Chemistry (ICOMC 2014) was held in Sapporo on 13th – 18th July with over 1100 participants in attendance.

Professor Philip Mountford (University of Oxford), Chair of the Dalton Transactions Editorial Board, was on hand to present Professor Michael Fryzuk (University of British Columbia) with a certificate commemorating his Dalton Transactions-sponsored lecture.

Professor Fryzuk gave an excellent talk on nitrogen fixation using organometallic species which was well attended by conference delegates.

After the conference, a number of speakers attended a post-ICOMC symposium at Osaka University on 19th July 2014. The meeting was attended by 150 students and local professors and featured talks from Professors Jun Okuda and Matthias Tam (both members of the Dalton Transactions Advisory Board), Professor John Arnold (Dalton Transactions Associate Editor) and Professor Mountford.

50 posters were presented during the conference, with Mr Kento Kawakita, from the group of Professor Kazushi Mashima (Osaka University and Dalton Transactions Advisory Board), being awarded a Dalton Transactions prize for best poster by Professors Mountford and Arnold.

Porous Inorganic Materials Symposium

Dalton Transactions and Journal of Materials Chemistry A, B & C will be jointly presenting a Porous Inorganic Materials Symposium in China this June, comprising of three events at:

University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, 26 June, hosted by Professor Shu-Hong Yu (Materials Horizons Advisory Board member)
Fudan University, Shanghai, 28 June, hosted by Professor Gengfeng Zheng (Journals of Materials Chemistry A Advisory Board Member)
Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Changchun, 30 June, hosted by Professor Hongjie Zhang (CrystEngComm Associate Editor)

All three meetings will feature talks from Dr Andy Burrows (University of Bath, UK), Professor Jing Li (Rutgers University, USA) and Professor Christoph Janiak (University of Dusseldorf, Germany) with additional speakers that will be unique to each event.

Winners at Dalton 2014

We were delighted to award six winners with poster prizes at the Dalton 2014 Joint Discussion Meeting .

The Dalton 2014 Joint Discussion Meeting was held at the University of Warwick in April and was attended by 200+ delegates with 150 posters presented. Poster prizes were jointly sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry journals Chemical Science, Dalton Transactions and Metallomics with each winner receiving a certificate and a Royal Society of Chemistry book.

1st Prize was awarded to Mr Jack Rowbotham from Durham University who was also awarded a Dalton Division Bursary to present his work at XVII Brazilian Meeting on Inorganic Chemistry in Araxá, Brazil in August. The award was presented by Dr Sam de Visser from the University of Manchester and Sarah Ruthven, Editor of Dalton Transactions. Well done Jack!

Advancing the Chemistry of the f-Elements

Now welcoming abstract submissions for Dalton Discussion 14 – Advancing the Chemistry of the f-Elements

This Dalton Discussion aims to highlight the burgeoning role, and exciting prospects for f-elements in modern, metal-based chemistry. Abstracts for oral presentations must be sent in before 16th December 2013.

Authors of the selected oral abstracts will then be expected to submit their work as a full paper, which will form the basis of their short presentation at the Discussion meeting. The paper itself must contain new, unpublished work and be submitted for review to the Editorial Office of Dalton Transactions by 30th June 2014. At the conference, each author will be given approximately 5 minutes to summarise the key points of their paper in order to leave the majority of time open for discussion

This year, Dalton Discussion 14 is adopting a new process. Papers presented at Dalton Discussions will continue to be published in a dedicated themed issue of Dalton Transactions, however article peer-review will now take place after the Discussion. This means that speakers have longer to make the finishing touches to their article before the papers are made available online prior to the meeting.
