2015 PCCP – Chemical Society of Japan Prizes

We are delighted to announce the winners of the 2015 PCCP Prizes for Outstanding Achievement of Young Scientists in Physical Chemistry and Chemical Physics. These were awarded by Dr Robert Parker (CEO of the Royal Society of Chemistry) and Dr Anna Simpson (PCCP Editor) at a prize ceremony held at the 95th Annual Meeting of the Chemical Society of Japan at Nihon University, College of Science and Technology on 27th March. The winners each received a commemorative book, a PCCP Prize certificate and a financial award.

The prizewinners:

Dr. Manabu Kanno of Tohoku University for his work on “Laser Control of Attosecond Electron Dynamics Nonadiabatically Coupled with Femtosecond Molecular Vibrations”

Dr. Michio Yamada of Tokyo Gakugei University for his work on”Unveiling the Unique Structures and Chemical Reactivities of Endohedral Metallofullerenes”

Dr. Taniyuki Furuyama of Tohoku University) for his work on “Development of azaporphyrin complexes with main-group elements“

ELECTROCHEM 2014 Poster Prize

Congratulations to Jing Wang who was recently awarded a PCCP poster prize at the ‘Electrochem2014′ conference which took place at Loughborough Univeristy, UK from 7th–9th September. Jing Wang’s poster was entitled ‘Electrodeposition and Characterisation of Novel Ni-NbO_x Composite Coatings as a Diffusion Barrier for High Temperature Electronics Packaging’ and he was awarded the prize by Professor Rob Hillman, PCCP Advisory Board member.

The ‘Electrochem’ conference series has emerged as an established annual UK & Ireland event, where a cross-disciplinary range of electrochemistry, fundamental and applied, is on show with a particular view on broadening exchange of knowledge, providing information about the latest research developments, linking academia to industry and suppliers, and engaging with the next generation of electrochemists and electrochemical entrepreneurs.

PCCP will be awarding more Poster Prizes next year, so please do let us know of any suitable conferences which PCCP could sponsor in 2015.

Poster prizes at UKTC2014

PCCP was delighted to award poster prizes at the National Training School in Theoretical Chemistry which recently took place at Oxford University, UK. The School is for graduate students from across the UK and aims to provide a broad-based introduction to key concepts and techniques that underpin research in theoretical and computational chemistry.

The posters were judged by Prof. Knowles, University of Cardiff and Prof. Doye, University of Oxford and each student received a PCCP prize certificate, as well as a financial award from the journal. The winners were:

Jack Davis, from Birmingham University, with a poster entitled Characterisation of Chemical Ordering in Palladium-Iridium Nanoalloys
Robert Pennifold, from Bristol, whose poster was entitled Understanding Reaction Mechanisms in Metal Catalysts using Ab Initio Methods
Julien Sindt, from Edinburgh University, with his poster Effective many-body interactions in polar fluids and their effects on structure and phase behaviour

PCCP will be awarding more Poster Prizes next year, so please do let us know of any suitable conferences which PCCP could sponsor in 2015.

Poster Prizes at Bunsentagung 2014

PCCP was delighted to award poster prizes at the Bunsentagung 2014, which took place on 29–31 May at the University of Hamburg.

A total of eight poster prizes were awarded to the following recipients:

A further 10 winners were also awarded with the PCCP ‘Hot Topics’ Prize: Janika Lauth (University of Hamburg), Wei Liu (Dresden University of Technology), Michael Senske (Ruhr University Bochum), Benjamin Sperlich (Dortmund University), Uta Stange (University of Kiel), Helen Preiß (University of Göttingen), Jan Goritzka (University of Bremen), Simon Merz (Radboud University Nijmegen), Manuel Tsotsalas (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) and Roland Frach (TU Dortmund).

Poster prizes: Theoretical Chemistry Group Conference 2013

PCCP was delighted to sponsor prizes for the two best graduate student poster presentations at the Theoretical Chemistry Group Conference 2013, which took place 24-26 June in Nottingham.

The prizes were awarded to Martina Stella (Bristol) for her poster entitled “A simple exact density functional theory embedding scheme” and Luke Crawford (St Andrews) for a poster entitled “New DFT insights into methyl propanoate formation at a palladium centre”.

Nernst-Haber-Bodenstein Prize 2014

Nernst-Haber-Bodenstein Prize 2014

Nomination submission deadline: 1st of October 2013

Deutsche Bunsen-Gesellschaft für Physikalische Chemie seeks nominations of candidates for the Nernst-Haber-Bodenstein Prize 2014, which is dedicated to the memory of Max Bodenstein, Fritz Haber and Walther Nernst. The prize will be awarded at the opening ceremony of the 113th General Assembly of the German Bunsen-Society for Physical Chemistry on Thursday, 29th of May 2014 in Hamburg, Germany.

The prize will be awarded to a distinguished junior scientist (of up to 40 years of age) for outstanding scientific achievements in the physical chemistry. Suitable candidates of international visibility in their research field will be evaluated by a high level expert selection panel with respect to the scientific quality, originality and independence of their research. Candidates should come from a German-speaking region of Europe or work there at the time of their nomination.

Nominations from established scientists in the area of physical chemistry should include a short CV of the candidate, an overview of the candidate’s scientific achievements, a list of the candidate’s publications, and a supporting statement.

Nominations should be submitted by 1st of October 2013 to:

UKTC 2012 PCCP Poster Prize Winners

PCCP was delighted to award three ‘PCCP Poster Prizes’ at the National Training School in Theoretical Chemistry 2012 (UKTC2012) which was held at the University of Oxford this week.

The winner was Jonathan Gledhill (Durham) with his poster on tuned range-separated hybrid functionals in DFT. The two runners-up were Martina Stella (Bristol) and William Vigor (Imperial College London) for their posters on a novel DFT embedding scheme and Full Configuration Interaction Quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC), respectively.

Each student received a PCCP Prize certificate, presented by Professor David Logan, School Chair, as well as a financial award from the journal.

PCCP Prizes at the ICCT and CALCON meetings in Brazil

The 22^nd ICCT (International Conference on Chemical Thermodynamics) and the 67^th Calorimetry Conference (CALCON) meetings took place in Búzios-RJ, Brazil from 5–8th August.

Elizabeth Magalhaes from the RSC’s São Paulo Office attended the meeting and presented PCCP poster prizes to J A Simoni (Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Brazil), Aneta Pobudkowska-Mirecka (Warsaw University of Technology, Poland) and Manuel Eduardo R. Minas Piedade (Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal). Congratulations to the winners!

Poster Prizes: Theoretical Chemistry Group Graduate Student Meeting

It was a pleasure for PCCP to award Poster Prizes at the recent TCG Graduate Student Meeting which took place in May at Kings College, London.

The winners were Gabrielle Tocci (University College London) for his poster entitled: ‘Structure and dynamics of the water-ZnO(10-10) interface from density functional theory’ and Leo Holroyd (University of St Andrews) for his poster: ‘Structure and energetics of the mutagenic base analog 5-bromouracil’

Bunsentagung 2012 PCCP Prizes

PCCP is delighted to announce the following winners from the recent Bunsentagung 2012 which took place last month in Leipzig, Germany.

The winners of the PCCP Poster Prize were: Dr. Jan Philipp Hofmann (Utrecht University, The Netherlands), Dr. Axel Rosenhahn (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany) and Dr. Felix Plamper (RWTH Aachen University, Germany).

All prizes were presented by Professor Martin Quack, member of the PCCP Ownership Board. PCCP is co-owned by 17 national Societies including the Deutsche Bunsen-Gesellschaft für Physikalische Chemie (DBG). Every time a paper by an author based in Germany is published in PCCP, the DBG receives a financial royalty from the journal. We are proud of PCCP’s strong and historic links with German research.
