The overall theme of the conference is “Porous Systems: From Novel Materials to Sustainable Solutions” and it will cover a wide range of topics from the synthesis of porous solids, advanced characterization, modeling, gas adsorption and separation, catalytic applications and natural occurring zeolites to the sustainable technological uses of porous systems and their applications in biology and medicine.
Submissions are welcome to the relevant journal across the themes of the conference. We encourage you to submit to this collection highlighting the challenges and opportunities in the fast moving field of porous materials.
Articles can be submitted from now until the 9th June 2014 and the collection will receive promotion at the conference in September. Please indicate in your covering letter that your submission is for consideration for the FEZA 2014 collection. Please note that all submissions will be subject to the normal peer review process.

The Gordon Research Conference on Dynamics at Surfaces was held at Salve Regina University on the 11-16th August 2013.
The meeting was a great success with over 100 attendees. A huge proportion of these – 60 – participated in the Young Investigator Competition. PCCP sponsored the three winners of the competition to attend the meeting and they gave their excellent oral presentations on the final night.

PCCP was delighted to sponser a poster prize at the International Meeting on Atomic and Molecular Physics and Chemistry (IMAMPC), which was held in Lille, France, on the 2-5th July 2013.
The selection committe, supervised by Helen J Fraser of The Open University, UK, chose Yansel Omar Guerrero Martinez, from INSTEC, Cuba, as the winner of the PCCP IMAMPC 2013 Best Poster Prize.

Abstract:
The hydration of transition metals, lanthanides (Ln) and actinides (An) in aqueous solution is a topic that attracts the attention of many scientists as this process is of relevance to environmental problems and medicinal applications. Actinides have an environmental and toxicological interest since they are nuclear fuel wastes with both chemical and radiochemical toxicity, becoming extremely difficult to handle it from experimental point of view. In this context, a more quantitative use of the Ln/An analogy is desirable to develop theoretical approaches capable of reproduce the experimental data existing for the former and capable of predict macroscopic properties in the solvation of the latter.
In order to investigate hydration of lanthanide/actinide and halides counter ions[1], one of our goal is to develop a polarizable force-field model adjusted on state-of-the art ab initio calculations[1, 2, 3]. Another goal is to discuss the accuracy of the model by investigating the impact of the parametrization uncertainties in the bulk water model and in the metal-water interaction model on the molecular simulation results.
Nernst-Haber-Bodenstein Prize 2014
Nomination submission deadline: 1st of October 2013
Deutsche Bunsen-Gesellschaft für Physikalische Chemie seeks nominations of candidates for the Nernst-Haber-Bodenstein Prize 2014, which is dedicated to the memory of Max Bodenstein, Fritz Haber and Walther Nernst. The prize will be awarded at the opening ceremony of the 113th General Assembly of the German Bunsen-Society for Physical Chemistry on Thursday, 29th of May 2014 in Hamburg, Germany.
The prize will be awarded to a distinguished junior scientist (of up to 40 years of age) for outstanding scientific achievements in the physical chemistry. Suitable candidates of international visibility in their research field will be evaluated by a high level expert selection panel with respect to the scientific quality, originality and independence of their research. Candidates should come from a German-speaking region of Europe or work there at the time of their nomination.
Nominations from established scientists in the area of physical chemistry should include a short CV of the candidate, an overview of the candidate’s scientific achievements, a list of the candidate’s publications, and a supporting statement.

The final leg of the PCCP Asian Symposia series took place in Seoul Korea yesterday.
A large audience listened to the excellent scientific talks including on graphene by Professor Byung Hee Hong, on the excited-state dynamics porphyrins and other large molceules probed by single molecule spectroscopy by Professor Dongho Kim, and on very high power energy storage by Professor Sang Bok Lee.
A talk by Professor Zee Hwan Kim of Korea University on “Plasmonics for single-molecule photochemistry and optical nanoscopy” generated much discussion.
The symposium also included a special cake cutting ceremony to celebrate that Korean Chemical Society becoming PCCP‘s 18th Owner Society. This means that now every time a Korean author publishes in PCCP, the KCS will receive a financial sum.

Some of the speakers at the PCCP-ICCAS Symposium on Frontiers of physical chemistry in Beijing
The first of three PCCP Asian Symposia took place today in Beijing. PCCP Editorial Board member Professor Lijun Wan opened the symposium. There was a varied and exciting programme of talks, with lots of discussion, with a very international flavour.
The scientific programme at all three meetings in Beijing, Tsukuba and Seoul features world class international and local speakers including gold catalysis expert Prof Graham Hutchings, predicted by ISI on 19 September 2012 to win the 2012 Nobel Prize for Chemistry.
The next symposium will take place on Monday 1st October in Tsukuba, Japan with the final leg on Thursday 4th October in Seoul, Korea.
