HOT article: All things nano

A series of Te-related arrays have been achieved on ITO by a ZnO nanorod templating-reaction method under different etching conditions.

By controlling the structure of the ZnO–CdTe nanocables, such as shell thickness, and the diameter and length of ZnO nanorods, size controllable Te nanotube arrays and Te nanorods-on-CdTe nanotube arrays should be obtained, which can be used for  numerous nanodevice applications, such as gas sensors, field-effect devices, infrared acoustooptic deflectors and solar cells.

Javier Pérez-Ramírez and colleagues have prepared mesoporous ZSM-22 zeolite by controlled silicon extraction in aqueous sodium hydroxide.

The generation of auxiliary mesoporosity has implications for the catalytic applications of this zeolite.

A 3D organopolymolybdate polymer with unusual topology

A 3D organopolymolybdate polymer with unusual topologyA novel POM-based 3D self-penetrating MOF containing Mo–N covalent bond has been isolated under hydrothermal conditions, showing an unprecedented (4,6,6)-connected topology assembled from a 2D self-threading skeleton.

The successful preparation of this species not only opens up a new approach to generate novel high-dimensional POM-based multifunctional materials, but also highlights an intriguing example of chemical topology.

Establishing mechanisms of solid state double [2 + 2] photochemical reactions

A double [2 + 2] photochemical reaction of 1,5-bis(4-pyridyl)-1,4-pentadiene-3-one (1P) was observed with in four co-crystal forms of 1P with the hydrogen bonding template molecule phloroglucinol (PG) or 5-methoxy resorcinol (MR). 1H NMR and the UV-vis spectroscopic studies established a stepwise mechanism for this reaction through the formation of a monocyclobutane intermediate.

February Crystal Clear: Nebula Nanofibres

.

This month’s Crystal Clear shows the work of Ping Yang and co-workers, who captured this image of what looks like a nebula in outer space.

The image actually shows luminescent nanocrystal fibres under 365nm UV light. In this paper, taken from Issue 6 of CrystEngComm, the authors also made hybrid SiO2-coated CdTe NCs which showed bright red emission. They further developed the fibres into highly luminescent 2-D fractal alignment and 3-D crystals. These promising materials have potential for use in biological and light emitting devices.

HOT Article: Nonlinear optical crystals for second harmonic generators

Using nonlinear optical crystals for second harmonic generators is an exciting field, and in this CrystEngComm Hot article, a high quality single crystal of K3B6O10Br has been grown using a topseeded solution growth method. The crystal shows excellent second harmonic generation properties, three times better than KH2PO4

This work is particularly significant as this is the first time a single crystal of this type has been synthesised that is large enough to  demonstrate NLO properties.

Hot Article: Vanadium oxide nanostars are born!

Vanadium oxides with various connectivities of distorted VO6 polyhedra are characterized by tremendous structural diversity, which make them a seemingly huge playground for solid-state chemists.

In this exciting CrystEngComm Hot Article, Sarbajit Banerjee et al. describe a novel seeded growth strategy to obtain nanostars of VO2 and V2O5.

The synthetic strategy offers a reproducible alternative to previous approaches for growing octahedral microcrystallites and nanostars with star, snowflake, and asterisk geometries.

Hot Article: Modifying crystal structures

In this CrystEngComm Hot Article, Songjun Zeng, Qibin Yang et al. demonstrate a simple lanthanide doping route for modifying the crystal structure (crystal phase, shape, size and physical properties) of monodisperse multifunctional NaYbF4 nanocrystals.

Lanthanide-doped UC nanocrystals attract attention due to their novel UC emission properties and potential applications in optics, biolabels, colour displays and as light-emitting diodes.

When compared with conventional bioimaging materials, Ln doped UC nanocrystals are considered the most appropriate candidates for biological fluorescent labels due to weak autofluorescence, deep penetration of non-invasive NIR excitation, low radiation damage and photobleaching.
