Doubt cast on X-ray structure of trapped reactive species

A recent post on the ChemComm Blog is generating some interesting discussion.   The blog post outlines the claims of a ChemComm article by Henry Rzepa (Imperial College, London, UK), that casts some doubts over a recently published article in Science (Y.-M. Legrand, A. van der Lee, M. Barboiu, Science 2010, 329, 299-302).

Why not join in the debate! Post your comments on the ChemComm blog  (https://blogs.rsc.org/cc/2010/12/23/doubt-cast-on-x-ray-structure-of-trapped-reactive-species/)

The ChemComm article(Henry S. Rzepa, Chem. Commun. 2011, Advance Article DOI: 10/1039/C0CC04023A) is free to access until 25th January 2011.

HOT Article: Unexpected hydrogen-bonding

In this CrystEngComm Hot article, Alicia Beatty and coworkers from the University of Missouri have discovered that sterically demanding groups cause different hydrogen-bonding connectivity in certain lamellar solids. The group looked at 3,5-pyrazole dicarboxylic acid and various amines and explored how this effected the packing of the co-crystals.

Exceptions to the rule: new hydrogen-bonded networks from an old reliable

π-stacked catenenes

Towards catenanes using π-stacking interactions and their influence on the spin-state of a bis(2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine)iron(ii) domainAn article of interest to CrystEngComm readers from our sister journal Dalton Transactions has been published online.  The article, by Catherine Housecroft and colleagues at the University of Basel, looks at catenanes which use π-stacking interactions.  They show that multiple face-to-face π-stacking of arene and pyridine rings occurs in [FeL2]2+ and [RuL2]2+ (L = 6,6″-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-4′-phenyl-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine) and causes [Fe(2)2][PF6]2 to be high-spin.
