Poster prizes at IUCr Congress 2011

Congratulations to Sajesh Thomas from Bangalore, India and Christophe Vande Velde based in Antwerp in Belgium, recent winners of the CrystEngComm poster prizes at the IUCr Congress in Madrid which took place from the 22-30 August this year.

The prizes were presented to Sajesh and Christophe by CrystEngComm Advisory Board member Catalina Ruiz Perez. The winners each received an RSC book, a subscription to CrystEngComm and a CrystEngComm poster prize certificate.

Sajesh’s poster was entitled ‘Observation of a Conserved ‘Selenium Bond Synthon’ Involving Se…O Interaction’ and Christophe presented a poster on ‘Non-centrosymmetric Molecules – Centrosymmetric Structure?’

I was also in attendance at this busy meeting packed with excellent posters and talks on a huge range of topics from the field of crystal engineering and crystallography. I had a fantastic time at this well organised congress and arrived back with some IUCr mugs to remind me of the conference! CrystEngComm Webwriter Claire Murray was also in beautiful Madrid at the event so look out for her report on her congress experience – coming soon to the CrystEngComm blog……

Satellite workshop on halogen bonding at IUCr 2011

CrystEngComm was delighted to sponsor a poster prize at a satellite meeting at IUCr 2011, ‘Categorizing Halogen Bonding and Other Noncovalent Interactions Involving Halogen Atoms’

The satellite meeting is part of an IUPAC project ‘attempting to give a modern definition of halogen bonding that is as inclusive as possible’, read more at their webpage: http://www.halogenbonding.eu/

The CrystEngComm poster prize was awarded to Arijit Mukherjee, who works in the Solid State and Structural Chemistry Unit at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, for his poster on ‘Halogen Bonding in Some Trichlorophenols’

CrystEngComm poster prize winners at the American Crystallographic Association meeting

CrystEngComm awarded two poster prizes at the American Crystallographic Association meeting 2011, in New Orleans last month.

The judges felt very strongly that Arbin Rajbanshi’s poster on “Alkali Metal-Coordination Cages for Selective Sulfate Binding and Separation” and Debasis Banerjee’s poster on “Design of New Magnesium Coordination Networks Using Solvents as Structure Directing Agents” were both excellent presentations.

Arbin Rajbanshi is based at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, working in the Chemical Separations Laboratory. Read this CrystEngComm paper that he co-authored:

CrystEngComm poster prize winner at ICCOSS XX

CrystEngComm was delighted to sponsor a poster prize at the recent International Conference on the Chemistry of the Organic Solid State (ICCOSS XX), held at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore.

The prize was awarded to Vjekoslav Štrukil from the Rudjer Boskovic Institute in Zagreb, Croatia, by Christer Aakeroy, for his poster on “Mechanochemical Synthesis of Zinc and Cadmium Metal-Organic Frameworks – The Story of Dimensionality and Solid-State Reactivity”. IUCr Madrid 2011 – 22-30 August 2011

The triennial meetings of the International Union of Crystallography represent a highlight for crystallographers worldwide. This year , from the 22-30 August, the XXII International Congress and General Assembly of the IUCr will take place in beautiful Madrid, Spain. I will be there from 22-25 August on behalf of CrystEngComm – please do send me an email if you wish to arrange a meeting. The Chair of the CrystEngComm Editorial Board, Len MacGillivray and Associate Editor for the Americas, Christer Aakeroy will also be at this conference.

Elena Marelli wins poster prize at the BCA Spring Meeting 2011

Elena Marelli from the University of Reading was this year’s winner of the CrystEngComm-CCG Poster Prize at the BCA Spring meeting at the University of Keele in April. Elena won the prize for her poster ‘Breaking up and getting back together: Transition metal cyanides in action’. Elena is supervised by Drs Ann Chippindale and Simon Hibble at Reading. Congratulations Elena!

Midwest Organic Solid-State Chemistry Symposium XXI

The 21^st Midwest Organic Solid-State Chemistry Symposium (MOSSCS) was held this past June 10-11, 2011 at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston Illinois. The origins of this meeting date back to Professor David Curtin’s retirement (Univ. of Illinois) in 1998 that has since rotated among a cohort of universities in the Midwestern United States. MOSSCS meetings provide a mechanism for emerging research scientist (undergraduate and graduate students, and postdocs) working in solid-state chemistry with an opportunity to showcase their work and become aware of the activities of other research groups.

Prashant Chopade, CrystEngComm prize winner

While all topics related to organic solid state chemistry are welcomed, this year’s meeting consisted of 27 talks centered on crystal transformations, glass solids, polymorphism, energetic materials, pharmaceuticals, and molecular recognition. The keynote speakers, Lian Yu (Univ. of Wisconsin) and Joe Lauher (Stoney Brook Univ.), and each of the conference presenters, provided extensive insight and stimulating discussion of the current challenges and trends in solid-state materials. In addition to the interchange of inspiring science, each MOSSCS meeting highlights the best student presentation. This year’s award winner was Mr Prashant Chopade from Kansas State University.
