Book Series Editor-in-Chief is Entrepreneur of the Year

Professor Tom Brown, a scientist at the University of Oxford and Editor-in-Chief of the new book series in chemical biology is the Chemistry World Entrepreneur of the Year 2014.

The RSC Chemical Biology Book Series is a new venture that aims to provide a suite of high level research books on cutting-edge research at the interface of chemistry and biology. We are delighted to have recently appointed Professor Tom Brown as Editor-in-Chief.

Tom has been announced as the Chemistry World Entrepreneur of the Year. He is responsible for three tremendously successful start-ups, Oswel, ATDBio and Primer Design. Read his entrepreneurial story in the recent article in Chemistry World, Triple-Stranded Success Story, by Sarah Houlton.

Tom received his first degree and PhD in Chemistry at Bradford University. He moved to Nottingham University, then to Oxford and Cambridge University to carry out postdoctoral research. In 1985 he was appointed to a lectureship in Biological Chemistry at Edinburgh University where he was promoted to Reader then Professor of Nucleic Acids Chemistry. He moved to a Chair in Chemical Biology at Southampton University in 1995. As well as his continuing involvement in ATDBio and Primer Design, Tom is now an academic at the University of Oxford. His research interests lie in nucleic acid chemistry, DNA sequence recognition and the application of nucleic acids to nanotechnology, diagnostics and biology.

Parkinson’s Disease

Affecting over 1.5 million people across the world, Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological condition. It affects 1.5% of the global population over 65 years of age. As life expectancy is increasing, over the next few years the number of patients with Parkinson´s disease will grow exponentially. To date, there are no available treatments that are capable of curing Parkinson´s disease, and the current goal of therapy, dopamine replacement strategies, is to reduce symptoms.

Today is World Parkinson’s Disease Day – a day for raising awareness and for educating the community of its causes, symptoms and the medical/surgical treatment methods available. The first World Parkinson’s Disease Day, which commemorated the birthday of Dr James Parkinson, also saw the launch of the EPDA’s Charter for People with Parkinson’s. More than 30 Parkinson’s organisations around the world united on the same day to support the Charter.

To support the work of researchers in industry and academia involved in drug discovery for Parkinson’s Disease, the Royal Society of Chemistry recently published Emerging Drugs and Targets for Parkinson’s Disease, edited by Ana Martinez and Carmen Gil.

Hanafy Ismail wins best poster at RSC BMCS Meeting

RSC_BMCS_Metabolism, Pharmacokinetics and Toxcity of Functional Groups

The prizewinner, Hanafy Ismail, with Dr Andrew Stachulsk of the Organising Committee

The recent Royal Society of Chemistry Biological & Medicinal Chemistry Sector Meeting on new perspectives in DMPK was held at The Chemistry Centre, Burlington House, in London.

Hanafy Ismail, University of Liverpool, was awarded the prize for the best flash presentation and poster, which was entitled ‘Probing Molecular Targets of the Endoperoxides: A Proteomic Approach’.

Hanafy was awarded with a book from the RSC Drug Discovery Series, Metabolism, Pharmacokinetics and Toxicity of Functional Groups: Impact of Chemical Building Blocks on ADMET, Edited by Dennis A Smith.

First book in RSC New Developments in Mass Spectrometry Series

Quantitative Proteomics is published today, and is the first title in the RSC New Developments in Mass Spectrometry Series.

Quantitative Proteomics is edited by Claire E. Eyers at the University of Liverpool and by Simon J. Gaskell at Queen Mary University of London, who is also Series Editor-in-Chief. The Series Editors are Robert C. Murphy at the University of Colorado, Ron M.A. Heeren at the FOM Institute AMOLF, and Mitusutoshi Setou at Hamamatsu University.

A title soon to follow in this new series is Imaging Mass Spectrometry: Molecular Analysis of Complex Surfaces, by Ron M.A. Heeren.
