Raman imaging gives new hope for cancer diagnosis

False colour images of the SERS nanoparticle signals.

Pop over to Chemistry World to read how combining two Raman spectroscopic imaging techniques could offer a valuable tool for future disease diagnosis.

“[The] work solves a limitation of Raman imaging by developing strategies to go from about 5 to 50mm depth penetration,” says Sanjiv Sam Gambhir, director of the Molecular Imaging Program at Stanford University.

Co-authored by Analyst Board members Duncan Graham and Pavel Matousek, the paper describes how putting SERS together with deep Raman spectroscopy can enable non-invasive analysis of multiple antibodies for different diseases tagged to nanoparticles.

Analyst Board members awarded at FACSS

Prof. Boris Mizaikoff, University of Ulm

Prof. Christy Haynes, University of Minnesota

Two Analyst Board members were honoured at FACSS 2010, held in Raleigh, USA last month.

Boris Mizaikoff, Analyst Associate Editor for Europe, was recipient of the 2010 Craver Award.  The Coblenz Society Clara Craver Award recognises the efforts of young scientists who have made significant contributions in applied analytical vibrational spectroscopy.

Christy Haynes, Analyst Advisory Board member, received the Arthur F. Findeis Award from the ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry, which recognises and encourages outstanding contributions to the fields of analytical chemistry by a young scientist.

Congratulations to you both!

Analyst Editorial Board Chair wins RSC award

I am delighted to say that Professor Paul Bohn, Arthur J. Schmitt Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Notre Dame University, US and Chair of the Analyst Editorial Board has been awarded the 2010 Theophilus Redwood Award. This is in recognition of the breadth and impact of his contribution to analytical science in the areas of microfludic and nanoscale chemical sensing.

Paul joined the Analyst Editorial team in 2007, and served as the Editor for the Americas for three years, before being appointed Chair at the beginning of 2010.

The Theophilus Redwood Award is given to a leading analytical scientist who is also an outstanding communicator, and is awarded by the RSC Analytical Divison. It is sponsored by the Analytical Chemistry Trust Fund.

Read a selection of Paul’s work published in Analyst:
