Issue 11 now available online

Analyst, 2012, Vol 137, Issue 11, front cover

Front cover: Schwab et al, Analyst, 2012, 137, 2541-2544

The latest issue of Analyst is now online, and we’re all about urgency as two exciting Communications feature on the covers.

On the front cover is work from Marcos Eberlin of the University of Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil and his colleagues.  They describe a simplified, fully portable version of Venturi easy ambient sonic-spray ionization (V-EASI) that now eliminates the need of laboratory gas cylinders and regulators.  This source, they say, seems to be one of the easiest to assemble and use, most economical yet effective and versatile platforms for ambient desorption/ionization mass spectrometry analysis of both solid and liquid samples.  Did you know that Marcos is an Associate Editor for our sister journal RSC Advances? Find out more here.

HOT article: “Turn on” electron-transfer-based selective detection of ascorbic acid

“Turn-on” optical detection of parts-per-million (ppm) levels of ascorbic acid in water using a redox-active monolayer on glass

Singh et al., Analyst, 2012, Advance Article

The design and fabrication of monolayer-based sensors for various chemicals, gases, metal ions, explosives and biologically relevant molecules have received much attention recently. In particular, optical sensors are of great interest due to the advantage that the sensing system does not need to be directly wired with large scale electronics.

In this paper, Tarkeshwar Gupta of the University of Delhi, Delhi, India, and colleagues describe the “turn-on” optical detection of parts-per-million (ppm) levels of ascorbic acid in water using a redox-active monolayer on glass.

Their system is based on a nondestructive solution-to-surface one-electron transfer process that can be read out optically with an off-the-shelf UV/vis spectrophotometer.

Biosensors 2012

Biosensors World Congress 2012, Cancun, Mexico, 15-18 May

The Biosensors World Congress 2012 is now only a few weeks away; it takes place in Cancun, Mexico, 15-18 May.  The last meeting, which took place in Glasgow, UK, in 2010, attracted 1100 delegates and this is sure to be another great opportunity to see some of the best new work in biosensors.  We’re disappointed not to be attending this time, but look out for flyers from Analyst and Analytical Methods with the latest information on the journal: you can even use the QR code to access more online!

Chair of the conference is Professor Anthony Turner of Linköping University, Sweden, who was recently presented with the RSC Theophilus Redwood Award.  Take a look at Tony’s paper in Analyst in our web theme on Materials for Detection:

HOT paper: Quantitative analysis of protein secondary structure in solution

A faster, more informative way to probe protein structures, which are vital to understanding protein function, has been devised by researchers in the US.

Proteins drive most biological processes but the majority of studies on them are performed under non-biological conditions where key dynamic effects can’t be captured.  For example, crystallography uses solid state, and mass spectrometry is in the gas phase and can be denaturing.

This method, developed by Carlos Baiz from the Andrei Tokmakoff group at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, uses two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy, and offers ultrafast time resolution, and enables study in solution, which provides the potential to look at protein folding/unfolding pathways; this could considerably expand scientists’ understanding of the protein structure/function relationship.
