RightsLink and permission requests

Are you an author? Do you need permission to use material from an RSC journal article? If so, you’ll be delighted to hear that the permission request process is now much quicker and easier, and available 24/7.

That’s because we have just introduced the RightsLink system for processing requests to use material from RSC journals. Go to the Instructions for using RightsLink to find out what to do.

If you are an RSC author, and would like to reproduce your own figures, etc in another publication, you do not have to request permission.

Also, if you are submitting an article or chapter to an RSC publication and you wish to reproduce figures from another RSC publication, you do not have to request permission.

All details can be found on our Permission Request pages.

To reproduce material from other RSC publications, such as Chemistry World, Education in Chemistry or RSC books, you will still need to use the Permission Request Form.

If you have any questions, please contact the Contracts & Copyright department.

Materials that matter at the Fall MRS

If you’re in Boston for the 2011 MRS Fall Meeting and Exhibit from 28 November to 2 December, make sure you drop by Booth #110. We will be showcasing our journals and books and giving prizes to all booth visitors who enter the lucky dip competition. And we’re proud to support the community by sponsoring the poster sessions at the event.

But why is the 2011 MRS Fall Meeting important to a publisher historically renowned for high quality chemistry research?

In response to the needs of the increasingly interdisciplinary community of materials scientists, our activities have evolved over recent years. Our new and more established journals and books cover many of the most important areas of materials science research.

Published topics range from synthesis of materials to a diversity of applications. The types of materials include organic and hybrid materials as well as polymers. Techniques include new synthetic procedures, the design and understanding of materials, microfluidic and nanofluidic technologies and the study of applications. Electronic, magnetic and optical properties of materials are included, in addition to applications in catalysis, energy, biology and other interdisciplinary sciences. Coverage also incorporates all aspects of nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Journal titles include: Dalton Transactions, Journal of Materials Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Energy & Environmental Science, Nanoscale, CrystEngComm, Lab on a Chip and Integrative Biology.

Book series include the new RSC Polymer Chemistry series, the established RSC Nanoscience & Nanotechnology series, and the forthcoming RSC Smart Materials series.

So whether you’re looking for the latest cutting-edge research, needing to access top quality reference works, or finding the best place to publish your materials science research, choose RSC Publishing.

Accepted Manuscript service extended again

Getting your research published quickly is a top priority – and our Accepted Manuscript* service means research is available, in citable form, even more rapidly.

From 3rd October, Catalysis Science & Technology, ChemComm and PCCP join Organic & Biomolecular Chemistry, Chemical Science and MedChemComm and provide submitting authors with the option of publishing their research as an Accepted Manuscript. More journals will follow over the coming months.

Our dedicated webpage has answers to all the most frequently asked questions – and you can bookmark the RSC Publishing blog to keep up-to-date with the latest news on Accepted Manuscripts and more.

*An Accepted Manuscript is an unedited and unformatted version of an article that is published shortly after acceptance. It is available as a downloadable pdf file. It is then replaced by the fully edited and formatted Advance Article.

New RSC Publishing platform launched today

Today saw the launch of the new RSC Publishing platform which provides access to nearly one million journal articles and book chapters through one simple, integrated search.RSC Publishing platform

So how will the new platform benefit you?

  • Save time by searching across all RSC-hosted journal, book and database content using one simple search
  • Discover new research as the platform will automatically include related articles
  • Find the right content fast through filtered searching which allows you faster access to relevant information by displaying  authors and RSC publications that have published related work
  • Share & recommend research with tools such as Facebook, Twitter and Google
  • Register and create a personalised account which allows you to store searches and receive search results as alerts

Project Manager and Electronic Publisher Graham McCann explains the processes and project priorities: “We created the new platform in consultation with the international scientific and librarian community by running a beta version alongside the existing RSC Publishing website. Everybody had the chance to actively contribute by submitting their feedback and ideas.”

Here are some user comments we received during the beta testing:

“I really like the ability to do a search by specific month.  I also like the filters, in particular the possibility to specify a journal.”

“It looks pretty slick for accessing the eBooks. I especially like the variety of “Browse by” features (series, subject, year, new) and the related books & article links. The same author feature is fun since it lets you easily move between the author’s monograph and journal literature.”

“This is an excellent move. The interaction platform allows the viewer to have access to more information on a particular article and hence save time and it has fewer steps.”

“I really appreciate the Citation download link. Clean look to the site, non-cluttered. Excellent.”

We’d like to encourage everybody to visit the platform and try it out for themselves.

2009 Impact Factors – RSC rise continues

It’s quality that really matters at RSC Publishing. And the recently published 2009 Journal Citation Reports ® prove that our quality is better than ever. Our average impact factor (IF) has risen from 4.9 to 5.4. It’s an impressive figure, especially when compared with the average for a chemistry journal* of 2.4.

But we don’t rely on just one or two titles to boost our average. It’s our entire collection that counts.

Read more about our impact factors.

Of the top 20 journals in the multidisciplinary chemistry category, 25% are from RSC Publishing. 90% of our titles have an IF over 3. No other publisher can match this, demonstrating just how well-cited our entire portfolio truly is. So the figures speak for themselves: you can trust all RSC journals to deliver what you need.

For guaranteed impact, choose RSC Publishing.

Some individual journal highlights:

Energy & Environmental Science – explodes onto the scene with its first ever figure of 8.5**, making it number 1 in the Environmental Science category, and number 2 in both the Engineering, Chemical and Energy & Fuels categories. Also in the top ten for multidisciplinary chemistry journals.

ChemSocRev – with a 15% increase, the IF now stands at an impressive 20.09

Green Chemistry – celebrates a 28% increase, taking its IF to 5.84 to lead the field of green and sustainable technologies

Natural Product Reports – rises over 23% to its highest ever figure of 9.2

CrystEngComm – rising to 4.18 and now the leading crystal engineering journal

Photochemical & Photobiological Sciences – another leader in its field, and its highest ever figure of 2.71 after a 26% rise

‘The results once again demonstrate the exceptional quality and reputation of the RSC Publishing portfolio as a whole; it’s therefore no surprise that so many researchers are now choosing the RSC as their preferred publisher for the chemical sciences”

commented Dr James Milne, Editorial Director, adding

“these results are also a great reflection on the dedication and commitment of the journals’ Editors, Editorial Boards and referees, whom we thank for their support.”

The number of articles we’ve published has increased by 74% in the last 2 years alone as we remain committed to providing a world-class publishing service to our authors, and delivering cutting-edge chemical science to researchers throughout the world. The figures provide a clear indication that more researchers than ever before are recognising journals from the RSC as a key resource to access the very best research.

* The 7 Chemistry journal subject-categories as listed in Journal Citation Reports ®: Chemistry, Analytical; Chemistry; Applied; Chemistry, Inorganic & Nuclear; Chemistry, Medicinal; Chemistry, Multidisciplinary; Chemistry, Organic; Chemistry, Physical.

**Figures supplied directly to RSC Publishing by Thomson Reuters after a technical error resulted in Energy & Environmental Science’s omission from the initial release of figures.

Footnote:
The Impact Factor provides an indication of the average number of citations per paper. Produced annually, Impact Factors are calculated by dividing the number of citations in a year, by the number of citeable articles published in the preceding two years. Data based on 2009 Journal Citation Reports ®, (Thomson Reuters, 2010).
