The latest issue of PPS is now online and can be read here. The cover features an article from Alfonso Blázquez-Castro and co-workers from Spain entitled ‘Tumour cell death induced by the bulk photovoltaic effect of LiNbO3:Fe under visible light irradiation’.
This work reports a pioneer application of the bulk photovoltaic effect in the biomedical field. The team demonstrate that the bulk photovoltaic effect, capable of inducing very high electric fields (up to 105 V cm-2), applied to cultured HeLa cells, using a crystal plate or microcrystals of iron-doped lithium niobate and blue or green light, induced a massive necrotic cell death.
