The Membrane Technology Conference and Exposition is the annual conference organised jointly by the American Water Works Association (AWWA) and American Membrane Technology Association (AMTA). This year the conference is being held on 13-17th February in Long Beach, California. They aim to explore “the development and implementation of membrane technologies in water, wastewater, reuse, and industrial membrane systems as well as operation and maintenance of membrane equipment and facilities”. As well as technical sessions, the event also offers workshops, networking events and facility tours.

Call for participants for the Indo-UK Workshop: Nano-Biomaterials for Water Purification
Kerala, India, 12th to 16th December 2016
Under the Researcher Links scheme offered within the Newton Fund from the British Council, Dr Durai Prabhakaran Raghavalu Thirumalai (Bangor University, Bangor, UK) and Professor Sabu Thomas (Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala) will be holding a workshop on nanomaterials for water purification in Kerala, India from 12–16 December 2016.
Advances in nanoscale science and engineering suggest that many of the current problems involving water quality could be resolved using nanosorbents, nanocatalysts, bio-active nanoparticles, nanostructured catalytic membranes and nanoparticle enhanced filtration among other products and processes from the development of nanotechnology. Recent developments in technology have resulted in breakthroughs in wastewater treatment for reuse. This progress includes membrane technology, which has emerged as a significant innovation for treatment and reclamation, as well as a leading process in the upgrade and expansion of wastewater treatment plants. Membrane filtration technologies form a promising avenue of research and innovation to provide effective and lasting solutions for adequate supplies of water of suitable quality to meet human, environmental and industrial needs. Our intention is to bring together the experience from India and UK researchers in order to discuss these topics and new targets in materials and chemistry for water purification.
Early Career Researchers from the UK or India are now invited to apply to attend this workshop. All travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by the Newton Researcher Links programme.
The workshop will provide a unique opportunity for sharing research expertise and networking. During the workshops early career researchers will have the opportunity to present their research in the form of a short oral presentation and discuss this with established researchers from the UK and partner countries. There will be a focus on building up links for future collaborations and participants selected on the basis of their research potential and ability to build longer term links.

Our International Symposium on Environmental Science
Comprising of two one day meetings, the International Symposium on Environmental Science was organised by the Royal Society of Chemistry in collaboration with Zhejiang University and the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
During the symposium, nearly 300 delegates attended to interact with four international speakers, who also serve as Editors of the three Environmental Science journals, and 16 Chinese speakers who are leading experts in their subject field. Sarah Ruthven, Editor of all three Environmental Science journals introduced the journals and answered questions raised by the audience.

25th Japan Society for Environmental Chemistry
The 25th Japan Society for Environmental Chemistry Annual Meeting was held in Niigata, Japan on 8-10 June 2016.
During the award ceremony Hiromitsu Urakami from the Royal Society of Chemistry presented several certificates to poster prize winners on behalf of our environmental science journals.

Early Career Researchers from the UK or India are now invited to apply to attend this workshop. All travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by the Newton Researcher Links programme.
The workshop will focus on some specific themes:
Session I: NanoMaterials and membranes
Session I will deal with all possible materials including nanomaterials such as Carbon nanopowders, Carbon nanotubes, Graphene, 2-dimensional materials, their nano-composites; Polymer membranes and their preparation; Polymer nanocomposite membrane preparation; status of manufacturing capability
Session II: Separation / Filtration technologies
Session II is intended to deal with all the separation and filtration technologies including nanofiltration and Reverse osmosis processes, their problem areas and solutions. Also this session will deal with the cost effective technologies available for obtaining portable filtration devices for use by common man, sustainable solutions
Session III: Waste water purification
Session III is to deal with waste water treatment covering the recent trends in treatment of various types of industry water, sewage water, waste water treatment in big colonies/ townships, universities, colleges for self containment, rain water harvesting measures

International Water Reuse and Desalination Symposium
A two-day International Water Reuse & Desalination Symposium focused on climate resilient water solutions was held in Brisbane, Australia on the 4th and 5th of November.
This specialty conference was focused on practical aspects of water reuse and desalination, as well as relevant research being conducted in the US and Australia, and featured a blue ribbon assemblage of world-class experts on these two vital components of the water supply equation.

Editorial Board member and Associate Editor Stuart Khan attended this meeting and took this opportunity to present the Potable Reuse of Water collection included in issue 5 of Environmental Science: Water Research & Technology.
“The delegates understood and appreciated that the focus of our journal is specifically targeted toward engineered systems. That focus makes it considerably more specialised than most of the other water research journals in the field.”

The symposium was a success and the themed collection was very well received. Dedicated to recent advances associated with the potable reuse of water, issue 5 includes a comprehensive collection of papers highlighting research technology and engineering development at the leading edge of potable water reuse.
“There was a lot of interest from the conference participants in our journal. A number of them were authors of the papers presented in this potable reuse of water issue, and others had already submitted papers to our regular issues. The fact that the themed issue was so precisely targeted to one of the key conference themes was particularly appreciated, and all complimentary copies were eagerly snapped up,” Stuart added.
The issue to combine a variety of topics relevant to potable reuse of water. This includes but is not limited to technical innovations, human health risk assessments, monitoring strategies, sustainability assessments and novel applications.
