2014 Inorganic Chemistry Frontiers International Symposium

On 27 February, College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering, Peking University hosted the 1st Inorganic Chemistry Frontiers International Symposium. This Symposium was sponsored by Inorganic Chemistry Frontiers, and was convened to celebrate the publication of this new collaborative journal developed by Chinese Chemistry Society, Royal Society of Chemistry and Peking University. There were over 100 local attendees from many top-tier universities and research institutes in Beijing.

The Symposium was started with an warm opening welcome given by Prof. Song Gao from Peking University, Executive Editor Daping Zhang and Dr. Suping Zheng from Chinese Chemistry Society. The first scientific talk was presented by Prof. Yi Xie (USTC), a member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, discussing about the chemistry, challenges and opportunities of inorganic 2-D ultrathin nanosheets. Prof. Lee Cornin from University of Glasgow followed with an informative lecture explaining the self-assembly of gigantic molecular structure. The morning session was then completed by Prof. Yan Li (Peking University) and Prof.  Hiroki Oshio, University of Tsukuba talking on single-walled carbon nanotubes and multi-bistable metal complexes respectively.

Following lunch, the afternoon scientific session was occupied by the lectures from Prof. Yi Lu (University of Illinois) on biosynthetic metalloproteins, from Prof. John McGrady (University of Oxford) on electron transport through metal atom chains, and from Prof. Paula Diaconescu (UCLA) on reduction chemistry of rare-earth metal complexes. After a short break, Prof. Oleg Ozerov from Texas A&M university delivered an interesting presentation on borylation with pincer complexes, which was then followed by the talks from Dr. Xue-Feng Fu (Peking University) on visible light promoted organometallic transformations and from Prof. Zhiping Zheng (University of Arizona) on the chemistry of lanthanide elements. The last lecture of that day was from Prof. Hiroshi Nishihara (University of Tokyo) entitled ‘Interfacial Coordination Programming of Electro-functional Metal Complex Wires and Nanosheets’.

This Symposium was a great success, with a series of excellent scientific talks and many opportunities for those attending the symposium to meet and discuss science with the speakers. We thank very much the 11 speakers for their excellent presentations, as well as the host organization Peking University for their tireless efforts and generous financial support to ensure the successful Symposium!
