New Editorial Board Members for Natural Product Reports

We are very pleased to welcome two new members to our Editorial Board this month: Professor Julia Kubanek (Georgia Institute of Technology, USA) and Professor Wen Liu (Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, China).


Professor Julia Kubanek

Prof. Kubanek received her Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry in 1998 from the University of British Columbia. Following this she held postdoctoral positions at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University California San Diego (1998–2000) and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (2000–2001). In 2001 she joined the Georgia Institute of Technology becoming a Professor in 2011.

Her current areas of interest include:

Aquatic chemical ecology; Chemical signaling; Chemical communication; Marine natural products chemistry; Chemical biology; Secondary metabolism; Drug discovery; Plankton ecology; Metabolomics

I’ve been reading Natural Product Reports since I was a graduate student in the early 1990’s. I’m pleased to join the NPR family as a member of the Editorial Board and looking forward to working with authors to bring important research to the attention of the natural products chemistry community.” Prof. Julia Kubanek



Professor Wen Liu

Prof. Wen Liu obtained his Ph.D. degree from the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (Peking Union Medical School) in 2000. After postdoctoral studies at the Department of Chemistry, University of California, Davis (2000-2001), and the School of Pharmacy, University of Wisconsin-Madison (2001-2003), he joined the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2003.

His research interests focus on:
1) natural product biosynthesis (genetics, biochemistry and chemistry)
2) combinatorial biosynthesis for production improvement and structural diversity
3) genome and/or transcriptome mining for discovery of novel microbial natural products

RSC Organic Division Poster Symposium: Deadline for poster abstracts 02 October 2013

The RSC Organic Division Poster Symposium is still accepting abstracts, but not for long. If you are a final year PhD student based in the UK/ROI and would like the opportunity to showcase your work to leading chemists in industry and academia, as well as your peers, make sure you submit your poster abstract by Wednesday 2nd October.

The symposium will take place on Monday 2nd December 2013, at The Chemistry Centre, Burlington House, London and there are several prizes available on the day. Alongside the £500 First Prize, there will also be a £500 “Selected by Industry” prize and two runners-up prizes of £250. And this year our headline sponsor,  F. Hoffmann-La Roche are offering a further prize of a visit to their site in Basel, Switzerland, to the First and Industry prize winners.

Reasonable travel costs will be covered for the students who are selected to present at this meeting. If you would like to find out more about the symposium and submit an abstract, visit our symposium website

Ribosomally synthesised natural products: a new name for a new year

A large collection of leading researchers in the field of natural product synthesis have come together to propose a communal nomenclature system for the biosynthesis of ribosomally synthesised and posttranslationally modified peptides (RiPPs).

The number of ribosomally synthesised natural products is rapidly increasing, and currently there is no uniform nomenclature being applied across the different compound classes. The classifications currently being used are starting to break down with the increasing number of available genome sequences; the nomenclature used in the various communities investigating subgroups of natural products of ribosomal origin can be confusing, and in some cases even contradictory.

Following on from several discussion groups, the authors of this review (who are working on different classes of RiPPs) present recommendations for a common nomenclature that encompasses all classes, and hope that such a nomenclature will be supported by the rest of the community with the classification of new classes.

In addition to this nomenclature recommendation the authors also present an overview of the current knowledge of the structures and biosynthesis of more than twenty distinct compound classes with examples from bacteria, plants and fungi.

Professor Dean Tantillo, University of California, Davis (USA) is the winner of the 2011 NPR Lecture Award and will be delivering his lecture at ICPOC 21.

The NPR Lecture Award is awarded to a researcher who has made a significant contribution to the field of natural products and who has been involved with the journal. Professor Tantillo was selected for his work in the field of enzymology.

In addition to the outstanding plenary sessions, there will be three parallel sessions over the five days comprising invited lectures and contributed talks, as well as poster sessions.

A broad range of scientists from across the whole community who share a quantitative perspective on chemistry will be there, providing an opportunity to discuss and celebrate the current status, development, and the future of physical organic chemistry.
